Thread: Should Rifle and Pistol DPS be even
My answer is no, they should not be even.
Reasons being we have the 2.5x melee modifier preventing us from being able to take any real sort of damage. We also have extreme problems with sustained DPS due to our specials using mind instead of a healable pool.

I responded to Oak's identical post on the Pistoleer forum ... here's what I said there:
--------------------
I think the DPS should be even. I don't see what the 2.5 melee modifier has to do with balancing versus pistoleer, since we're not melee. Why does the 2.5 melee modifier give you a disadvantage against us? It doesn't. Frankly I think the 2.5 melee thing is stupid and should be removed.
Also, I support increasing rifle damage to make sure that they are getting the right amount of DPS. They should hit slower shots that are much harder than ours, so they can kill in just 1-3 hits while we have to shoot a lot of fast shots that are much weaker.
--------------------
Centurian ... if you think your accuracy is worse, then ask for that to be improved. Of course Pistoleers will say that you guys have significant advantages. We'd rather do massive damage with the first hit than plink out small amounts of damage, and we'd rather hit the mind pool than the health pool. There are problems with rifle but I think the answer is to fix those problems (HAM costs, 2.5 melee, whatever) rather than have uneven DPS.
Dunno.. As it stands you guys should do more damage.. Although our DPS needs increased you guys outdo us by 300% as proven in several posts around here.
Now if we had defence to make up for 300% but we dont.. And Defences the way devs wanted them to be put it simply will not work (as far as resists) and if they give us uber dodge thans not a good thing for Rifleman if there shooting slower..
hmm basicly This one cant be answered to many variables.. In current state of game yes Rifleman should do more damage.. But certainly Pistoleers (not hybrids) should be able to do more than scratch
does everyone understand that ONLY MASTER SHARSHOOTERS (master rifleman) can shoot close to pistol speeds......so my point is that any smug/pistoleer/BH can grab a pistol at a speed of less than 2. While they dont need to master any elite or hybrid proffesion, we have to grind one of the hardest XP slopes, in groups trying to get rifle XP as an inter. rifleman is a joke, we gotta find something we can solo, and spend weeks killing that same thing.....my final comment is that 3 seconds is way too slow, thats what we were shooting at around 0 0 0 2. Way too slow.

No, rifles gain many wonderful disadvantages to pay for the DPS advantage, if pistols are to have the same DPS the devs should be kind enough to grant them some disadvantages.
I don't want the 2.5x melee removed, I don't want to be able to hit at close range, I don't want every **edit** class to be the same with a different graphic in their hand.
I see balance coming when all classes pay for their advantages with disadvantages, but no one seems to want any disadvantages at all, ever, under any circumstances.

Dude, I don't think they do. "Hey, that Master Rifleman can fire faster than me, and *I'm* a 1/3/0/2 Pistoleer!"
dummies.
With the 2.5x multiplier, we can dish it out but we can't take it. I'm cool with that. With high HAM costs from an unhealable pool, our ability to sustain high DPS is limited. I'm sorta OK with that, too; and the mind/willpower/focus buffs from dancers and musicians that are coming soon (hopefully) will make me completely OK with it.
Taking our disadvantages into account, we should have a higher DPS than pistols. I don't know that we need to do 2.5x as much, but *some* more is fair.

You didn't read the whole thread. Those posts were throughly disproven. Pistoleers come here and post DPS comparisons based on statistics of autoattack and they don't bother comparing HAM cost.
Rifleman HAM cost prevents us from spamming our special moves. In a group, I cannot spam Headshot3 against a Krayt Dragon til it dies but a pistoleer CAN spam any of their special moves from here to eternity. When the pistoleer runs low on HAM they use a Stim-B rated for 400 and they can spam more, when a rifleman runs low on HAM he has to switch to autoattack.
Pistoleers actually do more DPS when you factor in the fact that riflemen are forced into extra downtime and autoattack due to a drained mind pool.
Pecos,
That's true
Let's use Carbine/BH/Pistol as reference though ![]()
I don't use spice, how much does Muon Gold impact that scenario for downtime? I know spices suck with short duration+ downtime, just curious.
Also just as important, pistols/carbines/BHs can get doc buffs and have only about 17 mind/health cost per shot. Maybe the new entertainer buffs will address that for rifle users. Mind pool shots SHOULD be limited, but why are all shots so high in mind cost and not just the mind pool targeted shots? yet the "other mind attack", eyeshot, costs action. I'd be a little ticked at that too.
Entertainer buffs will be nice, but it will still leave a thorn: pistoleers and carbineers don't need doctor buffs, they can just be a 0000 Novice Medic and heal themselves for about 500 health/action whenever they need to.
Picking up Novice Medic is 15 skill points and can be done instantly. Picking up 4000 Dancer is a ton of skill points and takesdays of macroing. This leaves pistoleers and carbineers able to refresh themselves at will while riflemen wanting the same degree of independence must spend many more skill points on something that isn't even a proper heal. (I also suspect that to get a full buff you'll need to visit a musician as well as a dancer.)
I haven't done a detailed study, but my opinion of Muon Gold is that it doesn't change your downtime. In a prolonged fight, a rifleman usually fights for a minute and rests for 30 seconds. With Muon Gold he can fight for 10 minutes straight but mustrest for 5 minutes (you are utterly worthless during the Muon Gold downer period). I'd have to actually time myself to get more accurate with the numbers for non-buffed downtime, but I'd say that's pretty accurate.
