Thread: Finding Krayts with areatrack?

Can I ask for some advice please,

A group of us are trying to set up a Krayt hunting team to fo regular hunts and sell on the loot items. We've had some success against the Juvenile Krayts when we find them, but at the moment we are only managing to find Krayts on about 1 out of 3 trips.

It was suggested that we find it easier if we had a Ranger with Areatrack. As I already have some Scout skills I've won the job of grinding through the rest of Scout to get to Ranger.

Before I give up some of my weapon skills to free up the skill points, I'd like an expert opinion on two questions:

1.

Opps!

and the questions were:

1. Is areatrack good enough to be worth giving up some of my weapon skills to get; will it really make it that much easier to find the little critters?

and

2. What level of areatrack should I go for, is Novice Ranger good enough, or do I really need the range and direction options to make it worth while.

Thanks for any wise words you can offer!

"Is areatrack good enough to be worth giving up some of my weapon skills to get"

You'll find that the dynamic nature of the game system causes havoc with /areatrack, making it significantly less useful than it could be. If the Krayt hasn't spawned, you can't track it. If the Krayt has spawned, you can probably already see it.

"is Novice Ranger good enough"

At Novice, you can only scan 250m. Each subsequent level adds 50m.

Does the range really increase with level? I can't comment as I was a master when it arrived (and then had to drop most of it quite quickly) but I thought that it was a static 500m and that rangers wanted this changed. But then it has been a while. As for Krayt hunting, I know that I used to have a much easier time finding them with /areatrack than I do now. Most of my krayt kills have been on random spawns that I found in /areatrack while I wasn't really looking for them. But they are a rare spawn so actually hunting for them takes a lot more time, even with /areatrack. If the range is static, then you don't need more than novice (as you just plop down a waypoint and look around a bit (circling is usually a good way to do it, keeping the radar range at 128m or so). If the range grows with level, then the higher you have the better. I believe that NRaas is probably right but some testing when you get novice should help you decide further. Although direction and distance are both useful to have.

It does. I checked it out on Test Center a while back.

I would recommend direction as a bare minimum. Distance helps, but direction is about vital, unless you want to cast around in the whole radius when you find one.

Personally, I managed to track one every time one was anywhere nearby.. But as they spawn rarely, it's still fairly hit-or-miss.

I found an ancient sitting on the northern tip of those mountains that are about 1k south of the graveyard...spooked me as I wasn't looking for him...but he found me...heheh

That's odd....

I am the ultimate "Ranger Treat". When I am hunting alone, these buggers spawn all over the place. I can't go near the upper right hand corner of the map without tripping over one.

Of course if I bring a group of people we wander around the desert with nothing to show for it. So my suggestion to you is Get at least 2nd level of tracking and then go scouting early. Give yourself a headstart so that you can track the dragon and then call in the hunting party to your location. It cuts down on the chatter and helps squad leaders keep the party focused.

Right on JumboFett...

Its gotten to the point where i hate tracking for krayts. My PA mates all have a good joke and a laugh because everytime I am there with them, no lizards at all...however, when im out there by myself.. they swarm all over the place.

Im not superstitious by any stretch of the imagination, but this is starting to get a little eerie

Thanks guys.

It sounds like it might increase my success rate a bit, but I obviously shouldn't expect to be falling over the things.

I'll see how far I can get without giving up too much combat skill and give it a go.

Thanks again for the advice.

(any good Krayt hunting waypoints would be much appreciated :-) )

You really need direction (think you get it at tracking level 2) after getting direction I have found at least one Canyon Krayt or Giant Canyon Krayt on every hunting trip I have tracked for

Hmm, now that I think about it, I used to have the same effect on krayts. When I was a solo Ranger, I found them reasonably often without even bothering to look. But took hours to find them while grouped. Maybe maskscenting or concealing helps bring them out? Because most groups are never fully masked/concealed but I usually am when solo. Just a thought. As for waypoints, try the krayt POIs. Those usually have a reasonably high spawn rate (as well as a few other krayt skeletons lying around without POI markers that I can't remember waypoints for). My favorite place to have fought a krayt was 200m from the cloning center in Mos Entha (or whatever the closest static city to the graveyard is called). That was useful.
