Thread: Taking a hint from the Swordsmen (a voting on profession direction idea)

Well, looking through the Dev Tracker posts, I noticed a really neat thing being done in the swordsman forum (http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=swordsman&message.id=17703&page=1). They have a sort of voting thing going on for how they want their profession to be. I know we have had a few voting like things run here before (the PM NRaas with your opinion type) but something like this might be very useful with the Outdoorsman ideas floating around. I'm just passing the idea on--it seems like a really good one to me. Althought coming up with categories like they have might be a little more difficult. Below I begin with a very basic outline of a suggestion. It might be useful to throw a few ideas around for a bit and then see if NRaas wants to run an official vote like this. It also sounds like their correspondent will have a clever script to count up the votes which he might be willing to share with the other correspondents. The basic idea is to have several categories in which people have 100 points to spread between several options. So people express a preference for what they like best. The below are just what I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure the current Rangers will have a better idea of what is needed (Although I hope to be back to Ranger soon it has been a while and I'm not sure what has changed).

Aye. I like the idea.

Actually I was going to do something similiar regarding "Creature" versus "Humanoid" last week, but decidedto wait until later. I guess "later" is fast approaching.

woot 8) hey there Lythender it's me takei 8) yeah I'm still ranger 8) how things going with you...

just wanted to say that I saw this swords man thing too and yes I thought it was a really good idea in that it attempts to quantify the value that people place on different aspects of the ranger class.

I think though that before this gets answered by anyone that nrass and others that want to get a hold of this beast actaully think over what they want the information to show ..

when doing things like this you have to be SO carefull because it's easy for things like this to show the wrong sort of information.

so rather than just take what lythender has written down here .. can we get some seriously critical thinking done on the questions first

after all when they said "there are lies, **edit** lies and statistics" they ment it.

Good to know you are still around, Takei. I should hopefully be getting my Master Ranger title back in not too long now. And I completely agree that there needs to be some discussion about what sort of things need to be asked. I just threw up a basic list because the post would have seemed empty without it. Personally, I think it might be a good idea to see what the Devs have to say about the Outdoorsman idea before we start asking questions that won't really matter (even if they only comment on it to NRaas on the correspondent boards). If they flat out reject it (which I doubt) then the questions that need to be asked will be much different. Either way, I think some sort of discussion about what sort of questions should be asked is useful. The questions themselves are just as important as the answers. I threw up a rough outline as an example--I want it to be torn apart and fixed up. Anyone have any ideas on how to make it better? My recommendation is to keep the list short--I think that the most important thing to figure out is a general direction for the profession to take. Just giving the devs some idea of what we want the profession to be ina nutshell. There is just too much info on this board for anyone to digest thoroughly and still have time to look at every other profession out there. But then I've always considered myself to be a bit crazy.

Aye. Surveys such as this have to take into account the segment of the population that is surveyed.

Namely, the forum community is not a true representation of the gaming community as a whole.

As well, many members don't respondto public polls (prefering anonymity). And of course, keeping non-members from skewing the results is always a problem.
