Hello all,is there a strategy that anyone would kindly share with this young ranger that works for them soloing lair missions? I checked the guides and all seem to be pre-CU information. I currently am a ranger/pistoleer. I did use the p-dart tactic, not realizing it was a bug. But now that it is fixed, I will be trying other things, but any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Okay, not sure what CL/TL you are or what your combat mods are, but... in general...

with my ranger/pistoleer I still lead off with a p-dart, then keep moving back and firing whatever m y heaviest damaging shot is (sorry, having senior moment and can't remember the name of shot.. and telling you it's on the F10 key of my kboard isn't that helpful either ). this has the effect of weakening the critter and moving it back from it's pals.

As the P-dart indicator starts to flicker I hit it with a stopping shot to root, move back to my longest range (currently a pethetic 25m as I'm using a pretty crummy pistol. Shopping trip this weekend) and again watch the timer. Learn how long it'll take you to lob a trap and get ready to fling another p-dart.

If it's recovered a bit fast for me I'll stick it with a concussion shot (smuggler?) and move back a bit to safety. P-dart again. Sap it down.

At CL35-40 am finding they go over after using two traps, sometimes at the end it's easier to let it gcharge me then pistol whip it before applying the coup de grace.

I've another ranger/bh/pistoleer at CL76 and use pretty much the exact same tactic. The critters take about the asme amount of time to waste, but am doing a shedload more damage as I have a v. sweet FWG5 that chucks out ~500dps Oh, and I've got shedlaods of def mods. LOL

Another thing to remember, try and pick your targets with the fact that you are going to be pretty close to them firmly at the front of your mind. Nothing that spits, lunges, sonic stuns or intimidates. It's worth the same as any other critter at the same level, so think smart.

Pretty much what Almagill said. Find a strat that works with your proffessions. If your other profession is a melee I would advise using Wire mesh, bone spur, and noise maker. These will add states to the creature and allow you more defence against it. The Lair is not much a problem. If you use ranged, then stick and move is your best option. However make sure you look at the terrain before you start throwing traps. The rocks and trees will get in the way and makes it where you cant see the target or stops you from moving leaving you in a corner.

Rangers lead the way.

A Ranger is a more elite soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, or air. I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other soldier.

The great point here is that your also using stopping shot and/or concussion shot to work these things. I can tell you post-cu patch 20 as a Master Rifleman/Master Ranger, with no good "shots" to fall back on, I get toasted way too often. The only shot a rifleman even has with a state on it that works is the Snare shot...and that does a dandy 10% speed reduction which even when it hits I can't move fast enough to escape a critter.

I agree the prevous P-darts were broken and needed fixing, but the current state of our traps is just rediculous. Pretty much worthless comes to mind. For a prof that is suppose to be soloing in the wild, which is why I am a Ranger, I can't do that effectively any longer unless I have a secondary prof such as Smuggler and the concussion shot that would help me get through multiple critters aggro'ing me.

So, the answer to how to be an effective Ranger post patch 20 is..............have another profession to depend on with good shots like stopping or concussion or else your going to get worked.

And before you flame me that I am some fair weather ranger or a respec ranger think again....I have been a ranger nearly 1/2 my life in SWG, which is over 2 years now (original beta tester) and so I am more disappointed in the current state of our profession than I am flaming it. Fact is for the first time ever I am reviewing other templates to see how I can be more effective as a combat professional............and Ranger does not fit into any of those in it's current state, sadly to say.

My main toon is fromer master ranger, down to trapping and tracking now, master rifles, and a few pickings from BH and smuggler that give me more than decent defences, pretty good accuracy and a nice selection of v useful specials with which to keep the beasties at bay.

Downside is that I am not CL80, high 60's (otoh, I've got a line tied up in artisan too for my vendors, so could probably get back up to mid 70's if I ditched that.

Biggest issue I see, where people end up with a poor selection of specials, is there's still a 'all or nothing' approach. Meh, pick and choose. get the skills that most benefit you, not just a 'badge'.

It's a bit like deciding to play golf and then restricting yourself to a putter and an 8 wood. You'll get the job done, but somebody with a nice selection of clubs is going to get through the course way more efficiently.

oh, and not flaming just conversin'. Had my share of folk going "but you're a def stacker!!! thats sploiting..." urm, nope, am a ranger, I need all the help I can get

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

I also find after using a p-dart to run in a large circle around the creature helps because they will follow your footsteps instead of running straight at you and this gives yousome extra timeto re-snare them when the time comes.
