I love my carbines they're useful at short range and at long range depending on the carbine. They're kinda slow but that's a user issue not a weapon issue. The damage types are limiting but usually only to very high end content. I like that I can be up and running at a target, still hittingit enroute and harvest it before it hits the ground, that's not something you can do very well as a rifleman. Pistols are a good route to go, but the damage is low I think but they can be fired very fast. Rifles are probably the most suited to Rangering though. They have conceal shot, which is kinda slow until you hit master I think, but it's probably one of the best PvE specials in the game since you can spam it at the critters and they don't know what's hitting them. I know riflemen that take down BIG missions solo with concealshot. It takes forever, but it get's done without cloning. Pistols currently have better defense, Carbines have better damage. I've heard of Laser carbines doing 4k damage in a shot with Crippleshot, and it's only a 3rd tier special. In the end it comes down to what you think you can handle. I can't handle the short range requirements of pistols, and I can't handle the slow rate of fire from rifles. For me it's carbines all the way, and I love it.
Please get a2nd or 9th opinion please.

I've been a Master Ranger/Master Pistoleer for about 7 months now and it doesn't seem to give me any trouble hunting.Absolutely worthlessin PvP, but if you're hunting, it doesn't matter.
I went with pistols for the variety. A Pistoleer can use guns that do Heat, Acid, Stun, Energy, and Kinetic damage. This ensures that I have the right tool for the occaision. A Pistoleer also has good defensive capabilities. Good dodge and counter-attack stats. The damage is really up there, but the quickness is. On the norm, I can hit a creature 2 or 3 times with Fanshot, before it hits me again. And the with +105 dodge at Master, 7 times out of 10, the critter will miss me. This allows me to take on multiple targets at once. (Its fun to see only green and white spam in the combat log
)
For the other 3 times out of 10 the creature hits, you need to make sure you have good Kinetic armor when hunting, at the very least 75% Kinetic and perferably Composite. Ubese is good, but doesn't protect you much from the ranged attack creatures. The armor is a necessity regardless of your combat profession.

Just to add a few comments about the other ranged profession:
Rifleman - This seems to be one in favor by a lot of Rangers with pets. Send in the tank, and wreak havoc on the creature's mind pool. But the slow rate of fire and extreme range modifier can cause you a world of trouble when the pets go down and the Mob comes after you. Rifleman is a worthy profession, especially with the amount of damage they can deal with each hit.
Carbineer - Good overall profession, but limited in weaponry. Available damage types to my knowledge are Acid and Energy (please correct me if there are more). But, the carbine does a moderate amount of damage plus has posture change attacks. Great for when you need to make a getaway.
I really think its all up to your playing style. Whether you want to be a sniper or go toe to toe. You should also consider PvE and PvP aspects as well.

Master Pikeman and Sowrdman have high defences in melee and good specials hits (around 3500 mind for swordman). They are a good choice for PVP against creatures... and Snipers or ranged NPCs if you can reach them.

I mastered Pistoller and the rest of my skill points are in CH. I can use a level 19 pet which (from my guilds BE) means something with 9.5K health, 60% Kinetic Resist and Light Armour. This pet does zippo damage, but that is not his job, he is there to get beat on whilst I blast away with fan shot. I need no buffs to hunt since I rarely get agroed and when I do I call my pet to help then run like the wind till I loose agro. I just recently stopped wearing amour also and have been hunting insect meat on Dath with very little downtime.
EDIT: I use pet stim c's to heal my pet they heal all three bars for 1000+ and stat food for me, cheap brandy for my mind, accaragm to boost all three action bars by 400 and won won for an emergency health boost if I get agroed.

Rifleman does not have a slow rate of fire when you are a Master. Almost speed capped doing 2000+ damage with my powered up T-21, even when the mob is standing right next to me.

Most carbines are energy, but...
DXR6 carbine and Nym's slugthrower are acid
EE3 carbine is heat, and is supposed to do splash damage from what I hear.
With those 3 damage types Carbineers can damage everything except a few select Nighsisters, and we do the same limited damage to Super Battle Droids as everyone except LLC using bounty hunters.

One of my Lowca Ranger friends has this template:
Ranger: 0040
Master Fencer
TKA: 4030
Novice Medic
She creates a wake of destruction and animal corpses, and she does really well in PvP too.
