Okay, heres where it gets hard. I used to think SWG was a great game due to its vastly indepth crafting system, its unique interface and its planets to explore. With the recent updates towards the GCW its been alot more exciting to be playing SWG.
Unfortunately, the new CU changes are really taking away what love I had of SWG. Its rapidly becoming a clone of EQ2 and other run of the mill mmorpgs. I have played other games. Pretty particle effects and a leveling system is great for EQ2 and WoW. The best part about the way SWG was built was that it was a break from the mainstream rpg. Its interface, its level of technical detail was so fitting to a game like SWG since it was a futuristic high tech environment. The greatest part was that if I ever got bored with my profession I could spend a few months learning to be a crafter or a different fighting profession.
The Combat Upgrade isnt the way to fix this game. The people who made EQ2 did a great job with THAT game. We need the fresh minds and ideas to come across to SWG in the same manner not just making it a carbon copy.
Most of my guild moved on to EQ2 cause they were flat bored with SWG. Many of them having played since launch if not beta. I tried it and didnt care for the "must group" attitude to level.
Forced grouping to get yourself into the DnD attitude is completely wrong for SWG. Brawlers are now Barbarians who tank, Marksman are now high damage per second characters like archers or wizards who can fire from a distance. Doctors were totally revamped to be clerics or healers. SWG is not a DnD game! We dont need/want a cookie cutter group just to be able to run a rancor mission.
Another example, the games crafters require a vast amount of resources most mechanically harvested in the game. My profession is Ranger. Our main use is combatting creatures for their harvestable resources for crafters to use. With us lacking the Health Bonus in the CU we wont be able to fight effectively. Also, if someone isnt learning a profession they wont want to run to Endor and kill mantigrues and gurrecks all day long with me so I can play my profession properly. Frankly its boring for one person who has the mind to do it. Let alone bring a group with you.
That being said I do believe the CU needed to happen. Just not implementing it the way they are. The game needed alot of tweaking like removing DoTs(Damage over time weapons) and making the armor the same for all classes so you seen some diversity is truly great. But making it into a EQ2 clone is having a ripple effect across all professions. Its making very very many people unhappy.
So, to answer the question: I do believe that SWG pre-Combat Upgrade was an exciting exploration/learning experience. I wouldnt recommend SWG to other fans because its not going to be anything unique anymore. I myself am trying to find reasons to play and not cancel my account.

A friend was talking about how it wont be bad at all: "I'm already BH with some TK; I'll be able to master TK and BH, and even be novice medic! What about you?"
"I'm Ranger/Swordsman, with a few force boxes in melee and survival. To keep one of my professions, I'llhave to give up ranks in the other, since Ranger and only Ranger requires 4 novice branches now. Also, since Ranger is not considered a combat class (because apparently we're so good that we can harvest hide, meat, and bones without fighting creatures) we won't have the full health bar. And did I mention that Riflemen will have better camo than us?"
I have been a die-hard Star Wars fan for nearly 28 years. My students joke about it (but give me Star Wars Legos for my birthday). My daughter who's 4 recognizes the logo and calls me when SW commercials are on TV. I loved this game and especially loved being a Ranger. But when I read the CU notes and saw that my chosen profession was being nerfed, with no sign of compensation, I just knew my time playing this game was limited.
I'll try the CU. But I'm not pre-ordering Rage of the Wookiees. And I'll quit if the CU doesn't work for me. Because SOE has taken something that I truly enjoy, and made it unenjoyable. And I refuse to pay for that.
