How are we master rangers suposed to stay out on dath and survive with only one combat profession. I understand that we could help hunting groups and do it that way. But I'm a master ranger I stay out in the field for weeks with no prob. The only way I can see this happening if we get some decent amounts of general ranged or general melee accuracy and general speed mods, that would stack we the one combat profession that we have enough skillpoints for. I'm sure there are more master ranger that want to solo and collect resources to sell than those who are willing to go group hunt every day all the time. Pls i need advise I have always wanted to be a master ranger, even while knowing pvp i would be lacking, but i always assumed we were the uber pve players.

We are the uber in PvE, youjust need to remember to use the most powerful weapon you have. The one between your ears.

Pick your fights. If its too high level, or its a social mob, give it a wide berth unless you have no option but to fight.

Always look for ways to mitigate the damage you are taking, ie, use friendly locals to keep the less friendly stuff busy.

Mask, cammo and traps. Avoid detection as long as you can, then, once you've been found, do as much as you can to render the target "stupid and slow". Then kill it fast.

I'll be honest, I've not done Dath post CU (maxxing out some XP first) but on the other planets I'm doing 'okay', even solo.

We're uber? How did I miss that?

However - today I am wandering through C'net and several people are complaining they can barely take on Meatlumps solo. Geeze I think, I just solo'd a tortur lair with no problems. Granted, I used a ton of traps, I mean like 40 all told. I used to use maybe 6, but hey, traps are cheap to make, easy to use, and give XP, so why not? I concentrated on pdarts, glow-wire and sharp bone spurs and had blind, slow, easy to hit torturs not chasing me. A couple of specials later and they were down (ok, more than a couple, but you get the idea).

Use the skills we have - specifically traps. Get a combat master and with any points you have left over add either FS or general stuff to supplement it. Use TN to your advantage. You can't stand in one spot and shoot anymore, you will get stomped into Ranger goo. Shoot, trap, move, shoot. Distance is life, as some creatures have no ranged attacks. Find and use hills, it only helps. And get and use the best stims you can find.

Works, or seems to, for me.

The line of sight changes have made a dramatic improvement to my survivability and fun factor in the game as well.
I was doing the second part of the story arc last night taking on groups of 3 or 4 or the blacksun (or what ever they were) at the
waypoints.

I could agro them, hit one or 2 with a kneeshot and run over the nearest hill and keep popping up over the hill when my cooldown timer
expired for the headshots and drop them one by one

I have Rifleman 0,2,0,4 and medic 0,4,3,0

A couple of these guys would have kicked my ass pre-CU as I don't do buffs, but now you can hide behind hills, I am having more fun
than ever

I was thinking of going master swords/ master ranger ...went to dath died rather quickly...lol.......but now I how this sick idea of master ranger/ master creature handler. Seems I could grow 3 baby rancors or whatever and have kill for me .........and in pvp as long as peeps are busy trying to kill 3 pets and not me .....i might not have to have and ranged or melee skills at all and would leave me with enough skill to go put up a resource vendor somewhere...lol....or go like marksman rifles...lololololol.........but i having trouble deciding .....mrifle just seems so natural.......but mch would add the xtra damage power and some other content such as taming babies and selling them maybe?. Maybe if conceal shoot work as before i could kill stuff out there...but so far .....3 shoot they find me and kill me on dath...lolol

Ranger has always been a one master combat profession profession. OUr only ties to being "uber" pve'ers is solely dependent upon the secondary combat profession we pick up. Its always been this way. I agree we need something that will put us above all others in a pve context. This topic has been widely discussed on this board, and hopefully our concerns on this issue will be addressed.

(how long has the damn spellcheck thing been here? eventhough it doesnt work for me)

I'm Master Carbineer/Master Ranger, and I can do okay on Dath. I avoid Nightsisters, rancors above plain, and I always check CL before going in (due to the CL386 bug), and I can do okay with voritors, brackasets, plain rancors/youth, the occasional bull, and kwi and of course, purboles. Of course I still have a lot of downtime as I sit on my butt to heal back up, or as I look for something that *is* within my scope to kill that's not backed up to a cluster of Nightsisters, and as I make sure not to accidentally shoot the wrong thing when I equip my weapon or move something into my spec ops pack (anyone else have that bug?), but once I find it and avoid easy mistakes like that, at least I can kill it. (For one XP point.)

Usually.

Yes I have found a few times that equiping a weapon initiates combat and one strange occurance of initiating combat while sorting stuff in my inventory

TN and traps are definitely key. As is using your head and being smart about what you take on. I'ma CL80 Master Ranger / Master Rifles, and routinely taking down both NPC and creature missions in the level 80-82 range fairly quickly. If you're lucky enough to be certed in multiple types of armor, remember to switch up when going after NPCs (more energy attacks generally) or creatures (more kinetic attacks generally).

The only trap that really seems to be working "correctly" as has been discussed already elsewhere is the PDart - lob one in, slow it down (assuming "it" is a creature) then beat feet back to put some distance between you and it, and shoot. Rinse & repeat. Sure, you might actually have to take a minute or two between mobs if you're going after stuff a few levels above you or happen to agro 2 instead of 1 - but it can be done. It's still pretty easy to take down even a high level lair solo.

Oh, and learn your specials and get a good feel for their warmup / cooldown timers. I'm finding that I can actually do more damage in a shorter amount of time with some of the lower level specials that are on different timers - as 1 is still cooling down, I can be firing the 2nd, then back to the first, then the 2nd, etc. Net is that I'm able to put lots of medium damage hits on the creature in the same time that I could do only 1 or 2 of the high end"nuking" rifle shots. So, start with headshot (or snipershot when it randomly decides to work), pop a kneecap while they're coming at me, throw a PDart, fall back, alternate on a couple of the lesser specials and the mob is dead. They might get a couple shots/hits in on me, but I'm finding that with most creatures I can take 2 or 3 Lvl 82's before I really have to stop and let my health regen ('cause stims will help, but the best I've found so far are StimD's for 600, and with 3000 health it ends up regenning faster than the stim timer would take).
