The Hunting Terminal 2

(or making explorer terminals work)

This is a revamp of my original suggestion. With the changes that came to the game and specifically to hunting, as a result of the CU, I'd love to see something more concrete added to the community which could be benefical for both Rangers and non-Rangers.The main purpose of this proposal is to create a "mission terminal" which is both fun and exciting for everyone who participates. I envision it being something that a bunch of guildies can plan an adventure around or even something that a solo Ranger can use to supplement his hunting of a given resource. I hope you all enjoy and please, as always, give me some feedback.

P.S. If you want to jump to the meat of the proposal it's in red. Yellow, Green and Blue points are just highlighted to show where I was going and what my drive was for the main proposal.

Issue: Current Explorer Terminals do not give the user much more than an impossible task. When taking a mission from these terminals a rare creature type is (seemingly) arbitrarily named and given a value, finding any number of this rare creature type has proven difficult to even the most accomplished Master Rangers.

Issue: Since the CU, the Explorer Mission Terminals have been broken. Players can attempt to take missions but are not given the information needed to complete them. There is no mention of the creature only the amount needed to kill. The player is left with no way of knowing what they need to hunt in order to finish the mission.

Issue: The post-CU Explorer Mission Terminals do not appear to take into account the players CL. As a result, each mission is given for a minimum number of credits (330 average).

Issue: Mission terminals are currently the only way for players to get guaranteed acess to creatures at their CL. As a result, Rangers really don't hunt so much as they chase waypoints and clear the mobs that await them at the end.

Issue: AreaTrack, though effective as basically a form of binoculars, does not aid the Ranger in finding rare (high Creature Resource yield) creatures. It's value is simply a sense of the surroundings.

Inspirations: Bounty Hunters, Entertainers,Artisans, and factions get missions generated by terminals specific to their profession or GCW alignment.

Inspirations: With the changes to the CU which currently affectnatural creature spawning, thereappears a potential to address some of the concerns of hunters in the game whichmay provide new levels of "free-form" content independant of a profession revamp.

Inspirations: Hunting on Kashyyyk has started to apply a feel for "big game" and "specialized" hunts. Players looking for excursions to find high end Mobs are being given a taste of hunting in Star Wars Galaxies and could use a unique way of creating hunting events.

Proposal: Augment the current implementation of the Explorer Terminals to work as follows:

  1. Only Scouts and Rangers have the ability to use these terminals (like BH terms and spynet operatives)

  2. Adjust the assignments to work like some of the hunting missions given on Kashyyyk. (i.e. provide a creature type and then track the players collection of creature "pelts" leading upto the desired total.)

  3. Explorer Terminals (now called Hunting Terminals) are used to generate two types of missions. The first is simply a hunting contract, the second is a "Safari." (similar to the "destroy / deliver" option on regular mission terminals.)

Hunting Contracts:

    1. Upon taking one of these missions the player is given a starting location. The server then randomly generates alair of that creature type within 500m of that startinglocation. Using AreaTrack or physically scouting the area will reveal the location of this lair. It should not appear on the map... it should just be a forced spawn.

    2. The Ranger / Scout must then engage the lair tomove towardstheirquota (15, 30, 45, etc).

    3. Upon completion of eachlair a newlair is spawned within 500m of the previous one, or the original site. Up to 3 lairs of this type will be spawned per mission to allow the ranger to reach their quota.

Safari:

  1. These are Big Game Missions intended for Groups of 8 or multiple groups.

  2. Each mission offers up a series of waypoints intended to lead players to high end mobs.

  3. An Endorian Safari would give a creature type and then spawn a starting location as listed above. The creature generated would be a "high end" "elite" creature intended for group experience. Once this creature is defeated the group would be granted a new target in a fashion similar to the "hunting contract" progression. Each creature onward would be generated randomly within a certain radius allowing the players to search it out and eventually destroy it.

  4. Safari creatures could be generated with special features making them more challenging than natural mobs, giving them special attacks, granting them higher CLs or even special defenses could make them more challenging to fight and could warrant special rewards for participating in their hunts.

Result: Explorer terminals regain a more prominent stature in the Ranger and Scout community.

Result: AreaTrack gains a more concrete value in game.

Result: Group hunting, and non - dungeon content, gets brought to the forefront as players are encouraged to explore the games "wilderness" and learn more about the "natural" mobs that spawn on some of the high end elite planets.

Result: Rangers have a bonus for finding better creatures to give higher yields built into the game system (rather than directly into the class).

note: These terminals should remain creature oriented and should give rangers and scouts a slight bonus from their current rating to allow them to target spawns which had higher resource yields. There is nothing more frustrating than going to a terminal and getting a mission for dwarf gronda's when you know you can kill those using your weakest weapon and writing a post on the forum.

Hope you all like it.

Nicely thought out. I hope they implement something like this in the future during the supposedly upcoming Ranger Re-Vamp.

Very well thought out...

I would really like to see this happen as well (hopefully not in the ranger revamp) dont want valuable time and resources to modify the terminals..

maybe a mission revamp

Bingo! Any one of Bil's idea would help tremendously and all of them would make the mission term downright useable!

We all hope they get around to it sooner rather then later. I just hope it actually does get done in the supposedly near future.

I wanted to thank everyone for their positive feedback. Explorer Terminals are something that I think could really increase the viability of the Scout and Ranger profession BEFORE a revamp comes our way.

My proposal has nothing to do with a revamp and everything to do with creating a mini-game in which Rangers and scouts can participate. To that end I see no reason why, if it were possible, this kind of revamp could simpy be "content" and added as part of a general patch. I think it would be a fun way to augment the game and a great way to change the way the system currently works.

Since harvesting is becoming less and less a core aspect of Ranger, addinga source of income which revolved around hunting seemed key to the survival of the profession. If we are to be the PvE version of bounty hunter than I'd love to see some better form of Mission Based income.

It's just a suggestion and just a proposal, but thanks again for your kind words.

Personally, I don't like the idea of tying a Ranger to a city (i.e. making them come back to town to refresh these missions). Maybe these missions could be given out at the various Ranger camps? Giving Rangers a generic mission terminal could cause some problems (like people bugging you to drop a camp for them to take missions) but limiting the camp mission terminals to a hunting contract sort of thing might be cool. Once you finish your missions, just drop another camp and grab a few more. Or such a terminal could be implemented as an updated form of /track.

Overall, I like the idea. My only problem is that the current proposal seems to require you to return to the city to refresh your missions. While the recent planet balances have helped a little bit in providing random spawns of an appropriate level far from cities, it is still hard to find appropriate level combat as random spawns. Allowing the Ranger to provide himself with a fun combat situation wherever he happens to be without needing a ton of luck would be much more worthwhile to me than a terminal that ties me to a certain area on a planet. I'd love to be able to pick a random point on the map and hunt worthwhile targets in that area. Right now, you can't easily do that.
