Thread: The difference between artisans and hunters
I have recently come to the conclusion that combat / hunting characters will always be screwed in this game compared to artisans.
Why?
Because artisans can do everything you can do, but you can't do anything they can do.
Artisans can decide they won't pay 30cr per hide, pick up a weapon and go and get their own. But you can't decide you won't pay 80,000cr for a nice suit of armor and simply decide to build your own. Simply put, they own you. You have no leverage whatsoever.
Unless and until there are places rangers can go and things they can accomplish that no other profession can, get used to being on the short end of the stick. If every planet had some hunting grounds that were only accessible to scouts and rangers, things might be different.
The scout/ranger perks are nice, but they're not required to accomplish anything. You can take away traps, maskscent, conceal, camping, rescue and terrain negotiation and still get all the meat, hide and bones one could possibly want. Sure, it might take you a bit longer, but you can do it.
I'm two bricks away from Master Ranger and I'm already thinking about giving it up. Nobody needs me. My novice swordsman skills are more useful to a hunting party than my advanced ranger skills.
