Thread: Question from a Doc re harvesting formula

Had a wee browse on your forum, and found this formula for calculating the yield of a given harvest:
(1.0 + Creature_Harvesting_Mod/100)*Base_Amount
My question is this: is there a way to figure out the value of 'Base_Amount' for a given creature, say related to the 'Challenge Level' quoted on SWGCreatures.com?

The reason for this query is that I'm putting together a list of all sources of Avian and Herbivore meat for doctors (you can find this here), and am wanting to find a shortcut way of providing this harvesting data. I have neither time nor inclination to go slaughter one of each beast to find out the hard way!

[Edit: Typo]

Short answer, no.

Long answer - Depends on a number of factors, most important of which is the health/size of the animal. A "fat and healthy" large creature yields more than a "medium" yields more than a "sick and skinny". Throw in the dreaded shift bug, where all creatures of a certain type will yield 1 unit of a resource for a time. You can get two missions, within 100m of one another, one has large, fat and healthy, the next one over has mediums...go figure.

Then there is the fact that creatures in a cave, constant spawn type, all yield one unit regardless.

The "base amount" in the formula was just a hypothetical number, to represent how much yield a certain creature would drop, not a realistic number.

There might be a relationship between the challenge level and the HAM that the critter has, however, when you think you find an equation on one animal that works, it fails to work on another animal.

I am beginning to think that the number of resources dropped is determined by a committee and a focus group.

¿Base-Amount? I doubt this is a fix number. Two exemples:

-Dwarf Nuna: I get from 4 units till 10 units (in a3 minutes period, there shuold be no difference between the two nunas)

-Quenkers: I get from 65 unitds till ¿85-95? units.

Base_Amount varies on each creature you kill. Although there is probably an average amount you might be able to figure out. The formula arose by hunting with a Novice Scout and a Master Ranger and seeing how much they harvested on different creatures. All the amounts gathered were very close to that formula. The Base_Amount stems from believing that each creature you kill has some fixed number of resources that you multiply in that formula. If you want to get some sort of guess, try doing this:

Find a few different types of creatures of different CLs. Kill them and harvest (as a fixed scout level). Do this for 100 creatures and divide the stack size you get by 100. This should give you some idea of what sort of resource pull to expect from a creature of that CL. But it is a lot of work.

Higher CL=More Resources. That's the way I look at it. If I'm going hunting for resources, I'm not usually looking to kill x number of y creatures. I'm looking to get a certain amount of resources. I know that the best way to do this is to kill creatures with a higher CL. I'd recommend just listing the CL for them. It tells them the relative difficulty of the creature and it gives them some idea of the meat pull to expect. That formula will only really work when grouped and comparing amounts or after killing a large number of creatures to get some averaging over Base_Amount.

As for the formula, it is an easy way to calculate the difference between various levels of scout. It seems to hold up in practice. It tells us such things like the following:
A Master Ranger only harvest about 75% more resources than a Novice Scout.

A Master Ranger only harvests about 33% more resources than a Master Scout.

A Master Scout only harvests about 30% more resources than a Novice Scout.

These things are useful for pointing out why Rangers can't keep up with the organics demand. And it lets us know the harvesting gain for the skill points used. If you can figure out some sort of formula for average number of resources per creature of a given CL, let us know. But most of us wouldn't bother. Good luck with it.

We could derive this.

Base_Amount = Your_Harvest/(1 + Creature_Harvesting_Mod/100)

What we need to do is use this and run a table off to see if we can get a formula out of it.

Table: Yield, Base, CL

Yield: Healthy, Medium, Skinny
Base: Base_Amount
CL: Challange Level

I'm certain that Yield factors in somewhere, and you be usefull to know how

The question is, can anyone be bothered to harvest that many creatures and keep tabs on it? The actual analysis would be reasonably easy. Even with only CL and base amount as long as the base amount is averaged over a few hundred creatures of that CL. The yield is probably something like 10% less/normal amount/10% bonus for the skinny/medium/healthy. If you are happy with a noisy analysis, then I'm guessing that one lair of creatures of a given CL would be enough (preferably all of the same skinny/medium/healthy for all the different CLs). The average amount per creature could be plotted against the CL. Then you can just fit a line through it (or eyeball it). If we assume it is linear, we only need 2 points. But I don't think this one is just a linear growth. And it would still be annoying to collect all the data.

Yeah, never seen the shift bug myself. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Talking about dreaded bugs, anyone remember the 'warp to 0,0' bug? Or the 'rubber banding out of water' bugs? Those were two of my favourites from beta - oh and the 'you turn invisible bug' from beta which still happens at least once a week to me. lol

Yes, think I'll have a stab at recording some tentative figures on this. Of course, one more factor is the type of resource harvested - you get more bone than hide from a creature (or is that visa versa, can't remember off-hand!).

So, if anyone is interested in working this out, let's have your numbers... I've put a form together that you can download here (RTF format). It's got room for 10 bone, 10 meat and 10 hide harvests... if we get even a few people to fill it in we might end up with enough data to see something meaningful emerging.

Instructions: Download the form, and print out to gather data as you play. Type results into form after playing - if you don't know the CL I'll check it later. Email completed forms to me at [email protected], I'll collate everything in a couple of days and post results here. Do remember to fill in your Creature Harvesting Modifier (I also ask for forum name, but that's only to say thank you - don't fill in if you don't want to). Once I've downloaded your attachment, I'll delete your post and not save your email address.

Bleedin' eyes or not, there's a formula somewhere and I'm gonna find it!!!

finally, a good use for statistics.

there are a lot of variables in the equation, fat and healthy, medium size, scrawny etc....there have been some good posts here in the past, I would suggest doing an advanced search.
