Thread: An Idea for Creature Handlers and Rangers

I'll just post my message from the Creature Handler board, so here's what I'm responding to: Basically, the devs say that the CH is balanced because they should, by themselves, be no more powerful than another CL 54 profession (i.e. any single mastered elite.) I'd like to see what Rangers think:

"I think the biggest problem that stems from their reasoning is this: Other professions STACK.

See, if you take a Rifleman and add, say, Pistoleer to him, you get a combination that is greater than the sum of its parts (since you have someone who can use either weapon VERY effectively, with more defense than either profession would normally give, more accuracy, and a LOT more attacks.)

Currently, there's no way to "boost" the Creature Handler. If you go, say, Teras-Kasi Master and Creature Handler, neither side gains synergies from the other.

The thing is, a Master Creature Handler could probably tear apart a Master Teras Kasi (or come damn close) because his pet is so much stronger. But the thing is, once he hits Master, he will NEVER get better. That's what a lot of Creature Handlers hate- we hit a hard cap so much faster than anyone else.

Therefore, I would like to suggest the following, also in a pseudo-essay form:

What class needs a boost? Come on, you can see it. What class is BUILT off of everything Creature Handler-related, requires the ONLY mastered basic profession in the game, and is practically a Creature Handler already (but without the taming ability)? I bet a lot of you are already this, it's just as gimped as us.

Ranger. How about you give Rangers the ability to own stronger pets? Not big differences, maybe +20-+30 max levels in the end? Ok, don't let them tame. Fine, let them buy CH pets (hey, Pistoleers can't make pistols right?) from CHs. Rangers suddenly gain a much-needed boost. And, AND Creature Handlers have a way to boost their profession without making CH itself "too powerful for a CL 54." Rangers get to have a traveling companion that is nowhere near as powerful as a Creature Handler's pet. But combined, suddenly we have the ability to expand.

And what's wrong with an additional 30 Max Creature Levels? That's 2 CL 50 pets, nowhere close to "uber." But it's the kind of increase that each and every combat profession sees (well theirs is usually a LOT higher) and the kind of increase Creature Handlers AND Rangers deserve.

"But that forces us to take Ranger!" In a way, it does. Some of us already have Ranger, many of us have seen that it is absolutely necessary to take a combat profession as well. And they won't be weakened by this! But CHs need some way to boost their power that currently doesn't exist.

Long story short: Give Ranger +Max Creature Levels, something reasonable without being overpowering (as if Rangers could be overpowered) but don't give them taming. Give Rangers AND Creature Handlers the ability not to be mutually exclusive, a power that every other combat profession has but these two."

EDIT: By the way, no offense intended when I say things like "as if the Ranger could be overpowered." I'm sure you all know first-hand that Rangers could definitely use a boost. And what better than a travelling companion of your own? Of course, if anyone has anything to add, feel free.

I think Ranger and CH should complement each other, just as Doctor and CM, Merchant and any elite crafting profession, and any combination of Melee-melee or Ranged-Ranged profession mixes.

I think that Ranger should enable pets to burstrun with the owner, allow them to give the owner a boost to concealment or more specifically mask scent, increase the pet's terrain negotiation ability, and increase the pet's attack speed. However, I don't want us to be the "Squad Leader of PvCreature," if that would upset them. I think that Rangers should be able to camoflauge pets, and that they have a natural mask scent up of their own. Creature Handler should increase the Ranger's trapping modifier, burst run duration, and allow attacking from the creature handler's mount while using non-special attacks.

I've posted an idea similar to that, my pet theory used to be, after CU that is, is that CH and MR would be combined. Both are nerfed...throw them together and make us a D&D Ranger that can do PVE and PVP.

Ranger spends so much on skill points that being a bitelite is a totally justifyable.

Since CU, I've wondered...why leave ranger the only elite prof. with all these necessary skill points? Is there some plan?

The synic side of me says..no, just poor planning on their part. They forgot about us when doing the CU.

I did Master Ranger / Master CH in the hopes that the "extended knowledge" implied by being a Ranger would help compliment my CH skills. I mean, they are logical stackers and not in a power gaming sense. A CH / Ranger would likely have a better understanding of animals and maybe they'd respond better or a stacking would allow for additional levels of creature control. That would be sweet.

If something were done, I'd not be all that concerned about combat skills. Since everyone can fire a gun or swing a sword, I'd not be totally defenseless without my pets (I'm a Wookiee, aren't I supposed to be innately a decent combatant?).

The thing continues to be the bulk of the player base are combat types, so they make more noise than we do.

Iconic professions. Ok. Chewbacca was a Scout. How come that didn't stay?

When you think about it, aren't almost all of the original professions iconic? You can find something on each of them in the Expanded Universe.

I miss being a Ranger. It was more than a profession, it was a virtual way of life. It wasn't for everyone. But those who took it up became family.
