I was going to post this message in a thread I read on another forum titled State of the game, but since it relates to the Ranger profession I thought it made more sense to put it here.My favorite type of character to play has always been the Ranger wilderness survival type character. But my experience with this profession in previous online games(mostly UO)has always been a dissapointment.I have yet to see a game where this profession has been a really vital part of the community. The first character I made on UO was an archer Ranger, but it soon seemed to me that his ranger skills were kind of pointless. There was really no need or demand for those skills in the context of the game.Eventually he just morphed into one of the hundreds of tamer/mages you see running around in that game.
Now I think SWG has done alot more for this profession and I've really enjoyed playing it,but I would like to see it become even more solid if possible.Granted the game is only a couple of weeks old and maybe there will be some demand for rangers that is not yet apparent, but there are some ideas I think could be really fun if at all possible to implement.
I would like to see areas of wilderness that can only be accessed by Master Scouts or Rangers. At the very least Master Scouts with a couple of skill trees from the ranger profession,(so I'd have room for some taming skills heheh)but Master Ranger might be best.Otherwise you might see alot of hybrid combat/partial scouts that IMO would'nt really embody the essence of what a ranger is about. You would need some kind of incentive to make other characters want to travel to these areas....maybe certain kinds of resources or plants or animals would only be available here.A ranger would be able to get them into these areas, and so would be hired as "guides" or "trackers" through these places. There could also be Quests that required players to travel through these areas and so would need a ranger to escort them.Maybe it's a far fetched idea and it most likely won't happen, but it's just something that popped in my head.I'm sure I'm not the first to think of it.To me the alluring thing about the ranger is this kind of mystique or mystery that surrounds him or her. They have seen strange sights and places that no one else has, they know secrets about those places that no one else knows.I think maybe if this idea or something similiar were implemented in the game it might give that sense of mystery more presence, might bring it more to the front and create a more solid need for Ranger skills.Well just some of my thoughts.Any one else have any ideas?
