Thread: Ranger Specific Weapon

I was sitting here today, thinking of why i wanted to become a Ranger from my first day of play (seems like years ago!) I was a ranger in 'Eye of the Beholder', 'Baldurs Gate 1 & 2', 'Neverwinter Nights', my favourite character in D&D was an elven ranger. Seems i just love being all 'rangery'. Anyway, back to my thought, i realise all these previous titles are from a more fantasy setting than the 'space fantasy' of Star Wars, but if we can have swordsmen & magicians (Jedi) is it so wrong to have an updated and 'Star Wars' bow?

I know its been mooted on previous threads, but they got me to thinking of what it would add to the combat side of the Ranger. Dont get me wrong, i'm a true Ranger at heart, i dont wear armour, very rarely get buffed, oh, and despise the word 'uber'! So i'm not wanting to some how create an improved 'template' or whatever, just looking at justifiable additions.

A bow, kinetic damage? Seems obvious.

Now being masters of the wilderness and combat within it ( i follow the more 'Ithilien rangers' from Lord of the Rings, or 'Antarian Rangers' from Star Wars ideal ) what could we take from our enviroment to add functionality to the bow? Fire arrows have been used for centuries. Taking the poison from creatures and adding it to our arrows? Tribes in the amazon have done it for hundreds of years.

This damage over time, does it fit more with how we could/should be? Hitting from cover, then running and letting the effects do our job, rather than running in gung ho?

Just a thought.

Dont flame me too bad for this but I was under the impression that the ranger was a support prof that you would use with say master pistol carb or rifle. I dont see why you guys cant get a weapon that becomes available when you hit a combo of profs say like a rangers rifle if your a master rifleman and ranger.

I feel giving the ranger a class weapon will then add to having all rangers be the same say like if the weapon is a pistol you get cert for at novice then ever ranger will also do pistoleer so they can make the most of that weapon. Or give them a weapon and then add skills to there trees already. Being that explore traps and survile have nothing to do with combat. It leaves the hunting tree. Thatcould be replaced with combat skills after all how much + to harvest do you need.

What if we got a tranquilizer gun?Something that shoots darts - that would give us the ability to hit a creature from outside normal combat range. (I know we can throw traps, but that just seems to agro the mob!)

First off, trapping is meant to be a combat skill. You can only use them in combat so a weapon would not necessarily be out of place there.

But, as you say, Ranger is a support profession. Giving us something that almost forces us to choose another supplementary profession (like a hunting rifle making everyone take Ranger/Rifleman) is a bad way to do things. Traps and some defense mods should make us effective in combat. Making the trap effects applied by an instrument like a bow is one of the many interesting ways of doing it, though. But I don't think that the primary killing weapon of a Ranger should come from the Ranger profession. It leads to that feeling of sameness that you get with the various templates out there.

I agree with you on most of that, but many of us see a need for a more profession-specific weapon. The main reason, I think, is that traps aren't nearly useful enough. Most of us Masters only used traps to get to Master and no longer use them. If the traps were made more useful, then I agree that we don't need anything more weapon related.

But if we can get another fun toy, I still think a Star Wars bow, with arrows crafted by us ourselves with effects ranging from poison to paralysis would be a neat thing. It wouldn't be really great in PvP, but that's not why I would want it. It would be really useful in hunting animals.

  • Silent- we could sneak up on creatures and not have to break our cover to attack. It wouldn't be good enough so we would never have to break cover, but it would give us an edge before we had to.

  • Effects- paralysis or poison to make hunting the big creatures a little easier. Not super powerful, but enough to get us started with the kill.

Those are my two main thoughts, anybody else got anything to add?

I'm with those who think that the idea of a bow is kinda silly.. I mean, the idea of fencers and swordsmen is kinda silly in the SW universe if you ask me. Pikemen have some minor precedent, but they're otherwise just as silly. The only reason melee classes exist is because gamers think that every game should have melee classes, despite the fact that you never really see anyone besides Jedi mixing it up with anything that doesn't shoot glowy bits of light in the SW movies.

A trap thrower.. Sure. Why not. But not a bow. We're not ewoks, even if some of us look like really, really tall ewoks.

P.S. I carry a bowcaster alongside my T-21. It's like the carbine of rifles. Medium range, fairly fast speed, pretty low HAM costs. It's a good defensive weapon.

I've seen a few crafters use them. The bowcaster is a better weapon than a CDEF. But there is another thread that was here recently with many good ideas for Ranger weapons (you should be able to do a forum search on Ranger Weapon to find it). In my opinion, the Ranger's weapon should be the traps that we spend so many skill points on. If those worked then we wouldn't need something different.
