Thread: Another arguement about the usefulness of our profession.

First off I'd like to say that after trying out several professions, Ranger is the one that sealed it for me. Being a fairly new Ranger(quietly working my way up to 3-2-4-3 so far) I often come here to get tips about what we do and I continue to come across posts about how useless we are. Well tonight I had my first commisioned hunt on Lok for GDK's. Not even tenminutes into tracking I came across multiple Dunes, a couple Giants and even an Enraged. Finally finding a GDK, the hunt began, the kill was made and the client happy. He got his scales and I walked away with hides, looted meat(308 units of it with PE and OQ both over 900) and a 20,000 /tip. With all this been said could someone again tell me just how useless we are?

Tracking IS very useful - but how much of your camoflague skills (as opposed to maskscent) did you use on that hunt? Were your "wilderness survival" skills of any use? Did you use any of those AOE traps?

I very much suspect not. As an ex MasterRanger (and now 0030) I'm afraid tracking is the only Ranger skill that is useful on a day to day basis, so that was the only skill I kept.

Camoflague is so buggedyou end up using maskscent and even if it weren't bugged the material requirementswill send you back to maskscent anyway. If you group a lot it might be useful where non-scouts want to hide from creatures (how often does that happen?).

Wilderness Survival skills give you bigger camps with workstationsand better meds - but nothing better than you can get with a basic camp and a droid. The "special items only forageable by rangers" have never been put in the game.

The "high level AOE traps" have less effect than a combat special move and won't exactly turn the tide of battle against the critters you should be fighting at elite profession level..........

Don't get me wrong. I love Ranger and if I got an extra 40-50 SP's would be back to Master Ranger in a heartbeat. But mainly for RP reasons rather than the ability to do things in the game .

Cammo works real well whan i use it on other players also when i use it on my self. However seems Rifleman gets better use than the Close in Prof.

Precisely Odajja! If they need us, then we have a use, even if it is just for tracking.I'm comfortable with that. My character isn't an overly complicated one, I'm not expecting to reign fire on the galaxies. If you make yourself useful then people will come to you for help. I do agree that there are some bugged abilities and that if your looking for a combative character then Ranger shouldnt be in your list of professions. I also dont think people should confuse bugged abilities for being a useless prof. When we healed up I suppose I could have used a basic camp instead of a field base, but whats the fun in that? I guess my point is that even with the limitations we have on us there are still someusefulness here. If you dont make the best with what you got then you should probably find another profession,I on the other hand, will continue to hunt, track, harvest, forage and in the end make some creds that I can waste on completely useless trinkets and be completely content.

Congrats!

Might I offer that the individual that hired you is either new to hunting GDKs or too lazy to learn the patterns for his server. There really is no need for a Ranger to track GDKs or most other prey under normal circumstance because they must be made to spawn first. A well organized hunting group can find them just as easily. However, that being said, you tracked it nearly for free. I am not sure how much scales go for on your server but on mine they range from 3million to 10 million each. At 20K you were a steal.
