it'll be interesting. I wouldn't rule it out with this new focus. It seems unlikely like our XP will be gained the same way given this new vision, and I suspect that if we end up having to use a specific type of combat XP, we'll get a Ranger-specific weapon to push this vision. If we end up needing rifles XP, for example, I'd imagine a new novice and master lever rifle would be added for us.

Not saying anything against you Phenix... but I just wanted to quote you.
Personally, I feel that giving us a specific type of Combat XP would ruin the versatility that could be applied. If anything we'll need multiple types of combat XP. I was a Master Ranger/Master Pike for a long time, and I loved it. I would hate to see all the Melee Rangers out there disappear. And as much as Rifle has been tied to Ranger in the past, I think we need to drop that notion.
That and Helios specifically mentioned carbines in his "story/description" ofa Ranger sneaking into a base and stealing secret plans.
These are just my thoughts. Versatility was what I liked about Ranger. You could use different traps for different situations, as well as use different combat roles. I'd hate to see that disappear.

I'm not advocating giving us a specific weapons XP, believe me. I think people know that I've long been an advocate for the melee Rangers, making sure they were not left behind. I would oppose such a move by the devs. But, I'm just saying that IF that were to happen, we'd probably get a weaopn too. Makes sense.

Why not just make it combat XP? Scale the amount needed per box so that it's more or less equal to the amount of weapons XP you'd need for any other profession.

Like i mentioned many moons ago... why not a staff like predator has. You could shoot stuff and beat stuff with it.

the way the new skillsets look thus far, Rifleman will be a necessity. Set traps, camo yourself, stay put, hit from a distance, when they get in range, trigger the trap.

That sounds like good strategy. Be a one person ambush element while you have your budies 50 meters to your 9 concealed.

I started a thread about this last week.
I suggested a blow gun as one example.
Everyone thought I was off my rocker. I still think that a ranger/rifleman with conceal shot, cammo and a blow gun with strong tranquelizer darts would kick some serious butt.
I think it could be a looted weapon from a kashyyyk quest, I think that blow guns would probably be common in a society that has voodoo dolls and totems.
I could just picture an elder wookie presenting this to "the great hunter" as a quest reward.
I guess I just have too vivid of an imagination.

Well I just finished watching the Babylon 5 series on DVDs last night, so why not one of thoughts nifty Minbarry(sp?) fighting pikes ,) That was what thair ranger used.
Or since doctors have that alliance blaster or what ever it is called. Why not an "Imperial Spec-Ops Carbine" and was related to the Jaws Iron rifle?
On the other hand, a pistol might be a better fit for the image of a spy. Say a variation of the striker pistol used by the scout troopers. Something bigger might attract unwanted attention.
Nevertheless, really I hope ranger do not have to use one specific weapon. Leaving behind any existing combat style would be a loss to the profession.

If anything I'd go with some sort of melee weapon. Reasons why, being that for one a Ranger (in the sense it is now, or in a spy sense) might be more likely to use melee weapons to silence their enemies (thinking a bit like Splinter Cell here, where in stealth situations you want to either use a silenced gun, which I don't know if its possible for lasers, or you want to cut them down with a melee weapon). And simply because every single other hybrid profession in the game is based on ranged weapons (CM - Alliance Pistol, Squad Leader - Intimidator Pistol and Dawnsorrow Rifle, Smuggler - Renegade Pistol and some kind of Necro Carbine in addition to ranged specials, Bounty Hunter - Lightning Cannons, Proton Carbine, Czerka Carbine and ranged specials)

You are aware that's one of our new abilities/traps right? heh.
