Ranger Archive
Thread: what the heck are they thinking?!
FWIW, creating a new thread isn't neccesary. There are about a dozen thread discussing this already.
But, to clear up your issues.
Rangers in modern day, and in Star Wars lore, are paramilitary experts. The only place you will find Rangers as mainly against creatures and stuff is in fantasy games and literature. This is not a fantasy game. This is sci-fi, and the Rangers in this lore were paramilitary troops often assigned to do "dirty work" so this vision is perfect for that role.
We will be able to take things off of NPCs. In the future we might be able to steal stuff off of players. This would not mean credits or weapons, but rather quest-specific stuff. Imagine a person who has access to a base through a keycard. the Ranger takes the keycard and enters the base, then goes up and steals some important document from an NPC. What we steal will be mission stuff or GCW stuff (datadisks, etc) NOT your credits or anything. So having a Ranger to flush out other Rangers will be a must in the GCW that it looks like we might get.

I keep seeing this line get posted and it's not strictly true.
rang·er Pronunciation Key (rnjr)
n.
1. A wanderer; a rover.
2. A member of an armed troop employed in patrolling a specific region.
3. Ranger A member of a group of U.S. soldiers specially trained for making raids either on foot, in ground vehicles, or by airlift.
4.
1. A warden employed to maintain and protect a natural area, such as a forest or park.
2. Chiefly British. The keeper of a royal forest or park.
So 50/50 on the description. It can describe paramilitary forces or it can describe an outdoorsman who works with animals. (Forest Ranger, Park Ranger etc.)
As all through the game, from beta to the CU, Ranger was derived from the Scout tree and no-one complained. When we were ignored in the CU we were told that Ranger was not a combat class. The introduction of the hunting missions in RotW actually gave content to the Ranger as animal hunter.
So I have no idea what caused the devs to change their minds and replace it with the military/smuggler/commando version they have.
I say either fix Ranger as it is or at least change the name as it's a totally new profession.
Erm...there's a difference between real life and Star Wars universe.
In the STAR WARS universe, the term Ranger most often is used to describe a paramilitary troop. Antarian Rangers. Imperial Sector Rangers. The list goes on and on. Give me an example of a Star Wars group, known as Rangers, that dedicate themselves to collecting hide, meat and bone.
and for the record, wanderers, and game wardens don't go around killing creatures and skinning them for profit. So zero of those definitions support the ide of Ranger as a hunter and resource collector, which is not the same as a game warden that protects parks and animals FROM hunters.

Wow, if I have to be a Wookiee with a british accent who does nothing but tell the stupid kids on that stupid field trip not to pick any of the flowers, I will shoot myself.
At this point I should point out that Rangers (in military terms) are from a particular british group of regiments (Now know as the Royal Irish Regiment) and that the U.S. Rangers derive their name from the links they have with Ireland, that and the fact they were formed and trained in large numbers in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, prior to the Normandy landings is where the U.S Rangers come from.
flame if you like, agree with me or dont post. either way, i dont care
only npcs that you can attack is all you can steal from. What are rangers? they are the ones who sneak in and get info in battle, are they not? I think it may be interesting. I don't know, just have to wait and see. I have a master ranger alt and am excited to try the different things, been ranger for awhile now.

What Rangers aren special covert operations specialists trained in covert retreival techniques? The antarian rangers, the imperial sector rangers or any of the other rangers in Star Wars. perhaps you are confusing a ranger in Star Wars with a fantasy LOTR type?
