OK, maybe I am still wet behind the ears, but I need to ask. Which is the best planet overall for harvesting resources? Some say Dantooine, others say Dathomar. Both usually kill me if I hunt for big game!

Probably Dathomir if you're experienced enough to hunt rancors and some other things, they yield quite a bit. Although I personally like Corellia if you know where and what to hunt..

It depends on what your criteria you use to determine what is 'best.'

What I mean by best is, what yields the best overall resources. Its easy to go out and kill sharnafs and bring back 5k in an hour or so, but the resources harvested are poor quality.
The first time I went to hunt rancors was a complete disaster! Fully buffed and a little cocky, I went to hunt rancors. Lo and behold, there is an Ancient Bull Rancor. Little did I realize that he was anancient rancor for a reason! Aftercloning, I went back out. Guess what I happened to stumble upon. Not only one, but three AncientBull Rancors!!! I was a little intimadated, soIjumped onthe first ship back to Corellia to hunt Sharrnaffs!
Other than Sharnaffs, what is the recommended game on Corellia?

Quickest way to Master.
First, master a combat profession. Anything. Just Master. You get level 25 missions on the starter planets, level 40 on the better ones.
Second, take thyself to Talus. Look for tortur missions, level 25, 6k or thereabouts, on the mission terms. Torturs are slow, drop good sized amounts of resources, and don't DB. A bull gives 3k weapons, and 100+ scouting, others give less, but still decent except for meagers. You can do these unbuffed easily. Traps stick and give decent xp (200+ I think)
When you are about half-done with Master, go to Endor. Crazed Gurrecks - level 40, 6k on the terms. 3k weapons and 300 on the scouting XP. 100 units per resource, average. If you have a droid, you can do these unbuffed, but food buff anyhow, it goes quicker. They DB, so watch out. You may also want to try Gleaming Lantern BIrds - 10k missions. Only 2 per round, and one may fly off, but no DB, an easy fight, and good XP both scout and trap. You need to be food buffed and have a droid for these, they bite hard.
Yeah, y'all go to Dant with the lag. I was honestly the only person on Endor one day, as when I left the planet channel shut down. Harvested mega hide and meat and XP. Endor's a little more crowded with Whip's quest now. Sell camo kit applications to people while you are there and make more money.

Thanks for the tips! I will have to try it out this weekend!
As a side note, I posted my services on the trade board. My post basicly let them know that it is 15k up frontplusa fee based on location and what I am to track. What would a fellow ranger think is a reasonable rate?

By the way, no one creature drops the "best" resources.
There are several different "types" of animal resources. I'll do my best to break it down
First you have meats: There are insect, herbivore, avian, domesticated, and carnivor meats (I don't think I'm foregetting any-let me know if I am) Now each planet has different types of the same meat (not all planets have all the meats, as far as I know). That means that Dantooinian Avian will be different from Corellian Avian.
Then comes hide; Wooly, scaley and leathery are the only three types I can think of right now. Again, they differ by planet.
Bone is simpler: Avian or animal. Most people don't need much bone.
Okay, now here comes why there is no one "best" place to hunt: The resources change atrandom intervals. Meaning that sometimes, the "best" stuff to hunt will be Corellian Wooly Hide, and sometimes it will be Dathomirian Carnivore meat. These random changes are known as "shifts" and they are never announced and they don't always occur at set times. So there is no one best place to hunt, since the resources change. If you're only looking for quantity, I suggest Dathomir, since pretty much everything drops leathery hide. I mean EVERYTHING. you can get a 50k stack there easily.
Best bet is to use SWGcraft.com to find the quality of the current resources. Then just go where there is good stuff. That's the best advice I can offer.

A note to add to JB's comments. Do not, for any reason, attack the spiders. Whenever you see spiders go around. Endorian spider poison is one of the less friendly things in the galaxy. Also avoid mantigrue screechers and anything with "diseased" in the name unless you can keep them far away from you - their disease is area (the screechers are anyway) so even if they are attacking a pet they'll still get you.
Other than that, Endor is by far my favorite hunting planet. I even like hunting the spiders and screechers... but only because I can hit from very long range.
Like Phe'nix says however, just because it is your favorite spot doesn't mean the resources will be good quality. I usually ignore that though. If the quality is bad I just gather hide and give it to tailors - who don't care about quality. Explore a bit and figure out where your favorite spots are (it sounds like you are already doing that), and stick to the places that are fun for you.

In addition to what my learned friends have already written, and boy, I only wish I knew half of what they know, can I add:
Be A Wise Ranger
If a prey is too tough for you and you're going to end up dead OR having to hack at it for hour after hour (or what seems like it), walk or run away.
You're just going to get annoyed at yourself if that big beasty won't die and you're on your fourth or fifth incap, if only cos its' taken so long that you're outside the 3-incap timer. Kill something smaller, harvest it, harvest a few of them, gather that valuable XP and level up. THEN go after that huuge beasty and show it who's boss!
"best" harvest recently? Those monkey men things on Yavin. Loads of hide, easily killed, big family groups. Made my architect chum a happy crafter. Didn't make much coin, but got furniture for one of my houses

Just wanted to say thanks again for the tips!
And to my earlier side note, I was contacted for the Ranger for Hire post. The guy is/was looking for banthas. So I hopped on a ship to Mos Entha, found two spawn points for Tusken Raider Banthas. I did not do to well unbuffed, but in 30-45 min I recieved 15k. I kinda cut him a discount since he was my first customer (was only asking 10k). Of course, now he plans on looking me up this weekend and meeting my fees.

My personal favorite hunting planet is dathomir, and I really really wish the devs had put that bloody village somewhere else. Like right next to the coronet cantina, or some other place I don't ever go to. Anyhow, since you're a swordsman and have access to blast damage, I would recommend the various baz nitches on dath. The giant baz nitch in particular has no blast resistance (I think), and gives almost 500 xp per trap. I was able to complete the trapping tree in a couple hours on dath, starting with mutant and giant baz nitches and going up to rancors as my skill level increased. Also got some good survival xp, since I had to take many a break to craft a ton of traps (with resources I harvested and got scout xp forwhile getting trap xp).
Dathomir pretty much has it all-- a wide range of creature levels, large amounts of resources dropped, medium to high xp in any field, etc. It also hones your reflexes and senses, as you have to be constantly aware of your surroundings (and quick enough to act if you find a gaggle of nightsisters or SMC witches spawn on top of you).
As you've probably already found out for yourself, leveling through the ranger profession is fun and rarely feels like a grind (except for that BLOODY fourth frontiering box. Aaargh.) It sounds like you're enjoying yourself.

I think the only two complaints that I have about being a ranger is the frontiering boxes, and we are still waiting for the track ability. Area track is nice, but it would be nicer to track more specific targets!
Anyways, I appreciate the advice. Like most swordsman, my favorite weapon is the ph. So I will definately be heading to Dath again. Maybe I can avoid the ancient bull rancors this time!
