Agreed, random, however in my experience I would say I see a giant for about every 8-10 canyons. I've seen ancients spawn 3 times now, they are uber rare. Someone offered me 100k for a siting, at this time that would not even come close to being worth the possibility of killing one. maybe a million but even still, I would feel better trying to get everyone I know out to try and take it down. Are you getting paid to track giants? Why do you need to know?

He probably needs to know because the Giant Canyon Krayt is the final step in the Knight Trials for a Jedi.

as someone that keeps getting pestered by every budding jedi on the bira serve, i also agree that the giant is random but since the up grade in spawns it has gone mad you just can't seem to tell any more the other day i was tracking for some jedis and i came across a spawn of 4 krayts in one go but i never found an anichent yet

as far as I'm concerned the jedi can go to h***, I helped out a number and got little to nothing in return, my own fault I guess. However the guild that I spent the most time helping had a knight killsteal a giant from me and some guild buddies. I no longer will help any jedi with the trials, unless I know them and think they are extraordinary. Anymore, I'll turn them down and if they are nice about the way that they ask, try to give them some pointers on where to look. Other than that, let them waste endless hours wandering the graveyard and surrounding areasor endor, yavin4, dantooine, naboo etc., if you look right, areatrack, (and it shames me to say this) doesn't really help that much. I have been referring many people to the krayt hunting guide in the game guides forum. Very well done and very accurate as far as my experience has been.
As far as the ancients go, I can't tell you how much time I've spent hunting krayt's at least a hundred hours, more likely a few hundred. I've found 3 spawns of ancients. I go krayt hunting, I do not go looking for a giant or an ancient. If I am so fortunate then I offer a sacrifice to the star wars gods, and hope that we get some uber loot, but being how rare they are, just get some buds together and go look, the jedi should be more than happy to help kill any krayt as they need pearls for their sabers. Just don't let them tell you can have anything but the pearls, figure out a way to evenly divide the loot beforehand.

I only ever track for guild Jedi, because the Guild is very good at repaying me - And I get the loot from the kills I spot first. :-)
