Thread: Hunting Dogs/Animals
Whatchall think of having the ability to have dogs/animals
that hunt with you using thier 'nose' *think Hound Dogs via
MCH.
i.e. - Knowing Rangers can track-- dogs/animals/pets would ADD
to the range and more precise location to the mark. In fact
one could use the pet over thier own tracking abilities.
Ability to sniff out very specific animals, marks and once found
triggers some sort of 'handicap' or debuff for the mark. i.e -lowered
melee attack/defense.
I envision this where the ranger would sit with his dogs in camp...
throwing up his prey on the barbie. I know this may sound silly..
so my apologies. ;-)
just pick up MCH/Master Ranger. I don't think Rangers have any right to unique abilities with pets, that steps on the toes of Creature Handlers everywhere. There's no need for pets that can track in this game, in my opinion. Rangers serve that purpose quite well.
In my opinion, I like the role-playing vision that you have in your head (great mental image of Ranger and pet in camp) but that's exactly what it should remain. If you want to be the Ranger with the pet by your side in combat, you can choose that route. But not everyone should have that type of character open to them.
Not trying to flame, but this comes a bit too close to making Ranger and Creature Handler professions that are one and the same, which we should avoid doing. Creature Handlers control pets, Rangers hunt and kill stuff in the wild. Perhaps you're a toon that can do both, but that's a template choice, not a mandate for being a Ranger.
I agree with the previous posts, but I'm trying to find an angle where your idea doesn't die outright.
I shoulda mentioned-- my alts and experience have/are Master Creature
Handler (twice) and Ranger (3 times now). ;-) I know Rangers are
very finnicky when it comes to thier profession (I am). - Just thinking along the
lines of real life hunting.
I would be actually happy as heck if they would/could merge
the two professions. Ranger with Creature Handler...since 90% of
ALL Creauture Handlers are Hunters.
And ya I know..go ahead and be a MCH/MR....thanks for the comments.

I think you miss my point, I think CHs would *love* another opportunity to produce a pet they can sell to other people. Right now the only advantage to being a CH is you get to play with pets, but many would love to be able to sell mounts to people as a business - but mounts suck and no one wants them - I think if you put this to the CH community they would be for the most part, highly in favour of it.
Not as a Ranger, but as a CH, I would love this! I wish we had more pet training we could do for non-CH pets. I'd like to have something for all the profs, lol. Ranger is a good fit though, so them for sure.

Yall are too kind here. LOL-- i can handle constructive critiques.
Nice! Another Flurrian posted here.
Although, I do have to agree that if you want to have a pet, go CH. I loved my Razor Cat, Aeryn, pre-CU... and she was my constant hunting partner and then I decided to use those spare points elesewhere, so I could augment my toon with some more defense mods. I kept her in my datapad though... in case I ever grab my CH skills again.
Rangers would be able to use these abilities on a pet, but would have to obtain them from a CH unless they were also a CH themselves. Only a CH/Ranger would be able to use a Tracker/Hunter type animal of high CL, the rest would be limited to CL10 as with any non-CH.
Ideally I would see it as a Master Ranger ability only, and it would tie in with Area Track, or use a similiar interface. Perhaps Area Track with the animal deployed would mean the animal acts like a compass needle pointing at the target (thus giving a visual clue to group members and making it more useful than just Area Track), staying with the Ranger but always standing to point towards the target when stationary, or moving towards it when in motion. If ordered to Track, the pet would head towards the target directly more or less, and could be trailed by the Ranger or his/her party. The pet should have a chance of losing the scent and having to have the Ranger reuse Area Track to get back on course. The likelihood of this happening can vary according to the animals experience gathered from tracking checks or in combat as with any pet.
In function I don't really see the difference between this and a Weaponsmith who is able to make weapons that only specific classes can use, ie a T21 Rifle. I certainly see it as augmenting the Creature Handler trade by giving them a new thing to create and train, and rewarding the Creature Handler/Ranger double combination of professions by reinforcing them.
This would give Rangers a useful role in the CGW for tracking enemies, particularly Jedi, although I do not do the GCW so I am not sure of how desirable this would prove.
You missed my point.
Ranger is the antithesis of CH in many ways. They tame them, we harvest them. I use droids, have always used droids, and will continue to use droids. I am not going to be taming what I can harvest.
I wait for the day we can use traps in PvP against pets. I see a pet, I gauge how long it would take before I would be harvesting it. I keep targeting other people's pets in combat just from habit.
Better pet use as we go up Ranger - not in any way connected. Our knowledge of animals comes from skinning them, not telling them not to bite us.

How about a droid shaped like a slice hound?
with it's environment. Having a pet/hunter with ya adds to the lore and
gives Rangers Roleplaying a new dimension..which is what some of us have
with CH pets..but my idea would take it (pet) to a different level.
I know it won't happen...but as for what rangers can and cannot do ingame..
wouldnt hurt daydreaming.
The Rangers I know are very self sufficient and loners by roleplay trade..but
they love animals more than just harvesting them.
