Thread: Trapping XP question

Hello all. I've read the sticky regarding TL's and CL's. Here's my issue. I'm CL 28, going MCH/MRanger. I have Scout 4/4/3/4 right now (trapping 3) and am gathering Scouting XP for Master Scout, Novice CH, and Novice Ranger. According to the sticky, I should be trapping CL 20 to CL 30 and I can consistently trap CL29's and 30's, but I'm only getting like 250 Trapping XP per trap. Is this normal? It seems awful low, particularly when I'm looking up that Ranger Trapping tree...

Am I doing something wrong or do I just need to suck it up and push on? I'm going to get Master Ranger eventually, I just want to ensure I'm doing it the most effective way.

I seem to get about the same XP trapping CL 5 creatures, but the scouting XP is so lousy it doesn't seem to be worth it in the big picture.

I'm confrused (sic).

Thanks in advance!

you'll get more XP when you get to Ranger trapping. The higher the CL of the creature you trap, the more XP you get. It's a flat rate, if I understand the system now. Since your CL never enters the equation, you get the same XP for trapping a durni as a lvl 80 Master Ranger as you do as a level 1 novice scout.

also, buy some dweezle from a local chef, it will allow you to trap creatures about 30 levels higher than your current trapping level, which will increase the XP gain.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

Considering I'm only CL 28, I'm not sure the dweezle would help too terribly much, as I doubt I'd survive an encounter with a CL 60 creature right now. It'll be handy to have if I elect to do some grouping, though once I get up around CL 50 or so.

Thanks for the prompt response!

read my guide to big game hunting (at the top of the forums, stickied). Right now, a CL 60 beast is "big game" to you. As long as you can land p-darts, with enough work, you can kill a cl 60. but start off with CL 40 or so to get the feeling right.

LOL

I was reading the Big Game Hunting guide when you replied...

This isn't my main server, so I'm a bit more willing to experiment with this char ( and risk certain death). I think I want to at least get Novice CH so I got some back up when my Ranja starts gang-banging (relatively) heavies.

Without a ranged class, though, how usefull will the P-Darts be? My creatures will quickly close to melee range on the target so the movement reduction doesn't seem like it would be particularly useful. I'm taking Medic 0440 to be able to heal myself and my pets effectively at range. In that scenario, would you advise using the defense reducing traps and bone spurs in lieu of the P-Darts?

at low levels, it might be hard for your creatures to hold aggro. P-darts will ensure that if you gain aggro, you don't get hit. If you can intentionally try to get and hold aggro, you can stay out of attack range if you have a ranged weapon and your target won't attack your creatures, so they stay alive too.

They're not very effective generally. When you have a few creatures attacking, you might get them to actually do their job, but they do so little, generally, I only find them usefull when hunting creatures with high defense.
