I am a Ranger Rifleman and have been back for about a month now. I left before CU and find that I am still fighting in somewhat a PCU mentality and do not like that I know I can do better.
what traps do you use and why? Be specific state effect and the reason you feel it is worth it.
What order do you use your specials in? Again any tips to meathodolgy would be appreciated.
What armor do you use? If you use armor.
What foods do you use?
Pets/Creatures do you find usefull?

Welcome back
Traps - none
Specials - I have placed shot set to auto fire and I hit head shot everytime the icon indicates I can. I start from max range with Aim then sniper shot then spam placed and headshot.
Armour - the cheapest I could find, crap armour will mitigate 45% damage whereas expensive armour only mitages 50-60%
Food - Blob Candy (action regen) and Bofa Treats (health regen), both with a 55 minute duration so they last along time. Also cheap crispic for +40 ranged accuracy and some drink whose name escapes me for +60 accuracy against animals.
Pets/droids - None
Other stuff
Buy stim d's to heal yourself, you can use one once a minute and they heal 1k-1.25k health each use.
I really struggled to solo anything after the CU until I discovered the answer... which was to get the best rifle I could possibly afford then ADK it. This has made a huge difference, I can now kill a CL82 mob that is hitting on me using one stim d mid-fight.
I really recomend you start saving all the money you make for a really nice rifle (ALR in my case) and an ADK to apply to it.
Tissues with damage of 160 will get you capped SAC and almost capped damage, then get a 12% speed slice, slap damage power ups on it, add the ADK and you will be set up for a life times successfull hunting.

I've used a number of differnet strategies, depending on what I'm hunting. Often if it is around my CL, I'll conceal shot the creature from cover a couple times, follow with a sniper shot; often it'll be down by about half its health if things go well. If it's a slow mover, I have time to kneecap shot before I kip-up shot to get back to my feet. I usually take damage, but it usually ends up dead. This works best for creatures that are alone (or at least away from others of its kind).
If it's near others of its own kind, or if it has a higher CL (or it's an elite creature), I rely on my P-Darts and kneecap shots to keep the creature slowed down, and alternate with ranged and placed shot (with an occasional head-shot). I open with a P-dart, followed by kneecap. When they wear off, I alternate between P-Darts and kneecaps. While keeping my distance, I tend to follow the tried-and-true Circle of Death strategy.
I usually don't wear armor, but for nasty creatures I'll have a probot droid as firepower backup (better survival than melee droids). I've only recently started to look at foods besides Vegash (for harvesting), so I'm not the best source on that one.
I'm sure you've already seen it, but just in case, one of the local Bothans put up a terrific guide that is stickied on this forum concerning Big-Game Hunting, that I think you will find invaluable.

Read that too - it's really awesome. Phenix put together a guide for hunting that's quite useful (mind you it's for big game but really it applies to most).
Now the way I typically work an encounter (thus far) is something like this (no armor/no food, I'm poor and cheap lol):
1. Cover
at 64 m from intended target or as close to that as possible, incase it meanders
Make sure there isn't a lot of spawn around you, it can mess up your cover
2. Conceal Shot
Usually twice, but sometimes they're already getting too close and you have to adjust
3. Sniper Shot
This will uncover you, but delivers a very powerful punch
4. Get up, ready to run, *IF* beast is within 40 m, hit your trap (P-dart) OR use kneecap shot (name may not be quite right) to slow them. It depends on their distance and how much you can tank. I use both it's just which you do first can vary.
5. Headshot till death (yours or its) running around (see the guide for notes on using terrain too)
6. If at any time you aggro more than one, /bu and run like hell.
Also, if your trap fails, you don't have time for another, and kneecap isn't sufficient to slow them do NOT forget you have Firearm strike which is a great knock down. It doesn't always work, but it usually buys sufficient time to run like crazy. And if you're fighting NPCs it takes the place of the trap really.
Nother minor note - if you don't 'land' a special, it seems to me from my experience, it usually won't land the second time. I dont know why, this may be observer error but I almost think there's a timer on the resistance of the critter/npc to the special and if you try to hit again within that window, you fail automatically. My personal theory anyway. Maybe my specials just suck
I know how you feel it took me a good couple of weeks to get used to the CU. Don't forget to pack stims - they're level based now, witha significant timer, but anyone of sufficient level can use them. The rest is really just timing and practice. If I can do combat, anyone can lol Good luck, hope this helps some!

On a side note about foods....I really like to eat kiwik clustjo(sp?) and a booster blue. Duration isnt that great, about ten minutes for each one but the stats are good. They both have a health bonus (which stack) and an action regen. So I can get my health up to 4100, have +200 action regen, +20% action regen, +20%mind regen.

I also will use my trapping droid sometimes to throw pdarts while I hit it with a kneecap. I like to do one or two conceals then a sniper shot. I have been experimenting with all kinds of foods and such. Just depends if you are having problems with your action bar or health bar.
