Thread: The Joys of Rangerdom
Next thing you know dead voritor leezzards scattered across the field. and i had calmly picked up a good 10-12k of carnivoire meat as well.
Did I mention I love being a ranger
Very nice to hear! I've been working also exclusively with PDarts (as a PDart and Kneecap shot seem to do what Adhesive Darts used to do). What kind of effect and effectiveness are you seeing with Glow traps and others?
Just so we don't get our hopes up too high here.
I was hunting on tatooine last night..lvl 79 womp rats, solo. I used camo, one shot and they had the master ranger. Run away...try again, same result. ok..so try /cover nope..won't take affect. Type /cover about 15 times...still no cover so I can try a conceal shot. Maybe the terrian or distance to the rats. Move..80m away..still no cover.
Sending a ticket doesn't work with these people..what the hell does??
Last night I found out a friend had died in RL. So bummed out I turned on AFK and walked out into the desert of LOK to think...
After a while I found myself face to face with a GDK. So still bummed out I decided to trap and kill a GDK.
So I pulled the GDK away from the other MOBs and dropped a P-dart on it and kneecapped it.
While laying down and simply taking my time not really into the battle two newer players show up and ask if I need help.
At first I said No wanting to be left alone but then they said they just wanted to level and get XP. So I relented and let them join my group.
Now I told them why I was not talkative tonight and if they wanted to tag along that would be fine. I was simply out thinking.
Well two hours of thinking went by, many Kimos were slaughtered, many gurks were felled.
You know in the end I was happy to have helped these two CL16 and a CL26 one told me hell yeah he was happy he had gotten 400K XP hunting with me.
So even on a pretty crappy day for me. I was able to go out and hunt solo if I chose.
But helping two players return to the game and helping them to accomplish a goal that was nice.
P-darts are a Rangers best friend. Camps are simply nice to relax in and over the course of the night helped reduce wounds of those two players.
So to them thanks for last night I needed it.
Rangers lead the way.

Once creatures are aware of your presence it is nigh on impossible to get cover to work.
You don't say what level you are, but as you're master ranger I'm guessing you don't have all of rifleman?
In effect you're fighting with the offence/defence abilities of one combat profession so you are going to deal less damage and take more hits than somebody with a higher ranged accuracy and range/melee defences.
You need to find a way to keep creatures at a distance, so, go prone, use cover if you can get it to trigger, else use a p-dart to initiate combat. The creature you are targetting will react a little slower and, if your lucky, its friends won't come to the party. Hit it again with a kneeshot and/or a second dart.
Stay prone and use your highest hitting shot to finish the job as fast as possible.
Points to note: You can now fight a zero distance while prone. You can now throw traps while prone (tho your toon will animate standing). You can also heal and consume buffs while prone.
If you're going out to solo and are finding that particular creatures gang up, pick something less social. Even at lower levels.
If you're soloing, try taking missions that are no higher than your current level or maybe 1 or 2 levels below. If you've had an inspiration buff at the cantina that'll boost your XP by 10% so you will get an 'easier' kill without losing too much XP. Even without the buff you've got to ask which is better, getting 80% XP for 2 levels below you but being able to complete the missions, or getting 100% of nothing because you're dying too fast.

Well the traps give a lower combat defense, so when in a group of tanged and melee attackers i think they work really well. I haven't studied the numbers at all, but maybe i'll go out and do a little experiment and come back with an update.
As a swordsman i tend to throw one of these then use Center of Being... this should give me enough of an advantage. When COB wears off i use the defesive stance attack for the rest of the combat
You know in these 'depressing' times of the CU, I have always held my head high. When I started my char on Infinity about 6 months ago, I set out to be a Master Rifleman/Ranger because I had always wanted to do Ranger but usually end up getting Scout4040 and using it to gain creds (selling hides) then tossing it once i'm financially stable. Once I finally got to Ranger4040 I rode it out till the damned FS bug bit and FS senses were going to be in my template. I was happy that scout xp could be used for it, but alas, i also got bit by the power grinding bug and sought out the quickest way to do it. I picked up various levels of Doc to do quests then settled with Master Rifles/Doc0440/Novie CH.
I was power grinding FS Senses doing the ol' buff pet trick at the village until the CU arrived and wrecked that. When I realized that buffing was no longer going to be a good way to generate med xp and we were getting a Respec tool, I decided to useit to go back to my roots and pick up Ranger4040 again. Before I knew it, this profession alone managed to rekindle my love for this game world of SWG and how big it really is. I love running around the planets without using my speeder, masking scent to see if i can get around mobs, tossing traps to slow down creatures then using my jedi-like burst run to get away, etc. I started to completely lose sight of the whole FS grind thing and relaxed. Has anyone actually ran up to the top of the tallest mountain on a planet, setup a small camp, then gazed off into the vastness below? My guildies call me crazy but I love the amount of detail that is actually in this game's environment and I enjoy exploring it.
I have to admit that there is something about the Ranger profession that take you away from it all. I generally spend a good amount of time on these forums browsing the In Live and In Testing forums, and it's quite depressing. The Ranger forum seems to always have the threads that lift my spirits in the game and makes me want to run back for more. I am probably among thevery few people I knowthat intend to keep my ranger skills going through the Jedi grind (most have dabbled then dropped like I used to). As the only Ranger left in my guild, I generally am the center of attention because of my tracking abilities (ppl always seem to need to locate wild mobs for quests), creature knowledge, willingness to go out and hunt, and of course as a source of creature resource. After respec'ing back to this profession, the time I spent exploring planets and harvesting everything I come across, I am now 2.3 scout xp caps from completing my last FS branch.
Thanks for the good times Rangers, you DO lead the way.
For example Camo kits. When i first heard about something like this i thought "well that would be kinda cool" now i don't know how i would do anything without them. Kashyyk kills me because there's only mask scent there. It takes a special breed to be a ranger, you must have patience and dilligence and i have never met a true ranger who didn't have either of these.
I really want to go FS for the Padawan and another Alt... but i can't bring myself to dropping Ranger, so much so that i am thinking of just getting my Crafting alt the FS skills and not even worry about it with My Ranger.
I am glad i am a Ranger, it adds a dimension to the game that i never knew existed
