Thread: Squad Leader Thinking About Picking Up Ranger...

I'm a Master Ranger and a 1/1/1/1 Squad Leader, so I can definitely tell you that the two professions complement each other well. As a Master Squad Leader, you could certainly find advantages in having the top three camps, with their improved healing rates and (eventually) ability to keep out aggressive creatures, and you could probably find good uses for camo kits since you can apply them to other people.

The Ranger profession is my first love, but I'm adding Squad Leader skills to help round out the group support dynamic that comes with camps and camo kits. I wouldn't worry much about the advanced trapping line since there are only two new traps and they aren't really worth the resources to craft them, let alone the skill points, but you could also benefit from the Tracking line since that would allow you to see what creatures are in your immediate vicinity (up to 500m at Master Ranger). If they ever give us the things they promised us so many months ago, we will also be able to spawn certain creatures whenever we want using the forthcoming /track command rather than the passive /areaTrack command. Plus, we're supposed to be getting a new set of 'hunting blind' camps that increase camouflage and don't disband when you enter combat.

So basically, there are a handful of useful things now, but down the road it should be even better.

Thanksfor the input I'll definitely be adding Ranger to my list of professions! I'm curious if you know of the best combination of skills to advance to the best of my ability in Ranger without having to sacrifice my minimal Pistoleer skills.

Well, I guess that all depends on how you play.

If you are usually grouped up with a PA or something and many of them don't have /maskScent or it breaks often for them, then I'd say to get Wayfaring up to the level that has the highest planet you regularly hunt on. At Wayfaring I you get the /conceal skill (that uses the camo kit charges) and schematics for camo kits for the three starter planets (Corellia, Naboo, and Tatooine)and at Wayfaring II you get kits for Rori and Talus. At Wayfaring III you get kits for Dantooine and Yavin 4 and at Wayfaring IV you get kits for Endor and Lok. At Master Ranger you get the camo kit for Dathomir, but unless you give up Pistoleer, I doubt you'll have enough skill points. As you go up the Wayfaring line, you also get increased crawl speed, but that's of little tangible use to most people (except for Riflemen).

If you're in a group where each member is not on a vehicle, then the /areaTrack ability can help in finding out what's around you to hunt down. At each level, you can see creatures, NPCs, and players further and further away and you gain the ability to see first creatures only, then their direction, then NPCs, then their distance, and finally other players. So at Tracking IV you can see all players, NPCs, or animals within about 400m, along with what direction they are from you and how far away.

And regardless of how you play, I think, the higher camps can be very beneficial to groups. If you consistenly run with medics and doctors, the upper two camps have crafting stations that will allow them to experiment on crafted stims and such. At the highest level camp, there's a 'Weapon, droid, and generic' crafting station that lets you experiment on camo kits (the only items Rangers can experiment on).

Thanks you've given me a lot to consider. Tracking sounds really interesting to me and wayfaring as well. Although I would like to make better camps for my groups...hmmm....I guess I'll just have to play around with it for a bit until I figure out what will do me the most good.

My pleasure!

But yeah, it basically comes down to your own personal tastes and what you find most useful. Right now, there are some good advantages to being a Master Ranger, but there is so much potential that it makes a lot of us frustrated at the lack of interest on the part of the developers.

The whole Ranger profession seemed interesting to me since I first read through the strat guide. After reading this message board for the past few days it seems that Ranger is just as screwed up as Squad Leader is! I was wondering if any of you had any insight as to whether or not a Master Squad Leader with a few choice Ranger skills is a good combination or not. As far as a character concept is concerned it does make sense to have a more competant Squad Leader. Just looking for some suggestions.

One more question, is there any money to be made in being a Ranger?

Royight! Well folks what we have 'ere is the female Grassland Vorrritor. Very dangerous indeed! Their jaws have the crushing power of an AT-ST stepping on your foot! That'd make for a royight unhappy new year if you ask me. Now stand back a bit as I'm going to tap the lair in hopes of finding me one o them lovely little babiees. Now we 'ave to be very careful since these here over-grown iguanars have been known to deathblow...

That would be fun I wish their were a /mood crocodile hunter
