Yes, I have rescued creature handlers many a time. Just be sure that the one you are trying to rescue has weapon unequiped. Stay far enough away NOT to get DBed quickly and burst run if MOB to tough to kill.

do i target the rescuee or the creature?

What you need to do is target the person you want to rescue, and then hit rescue.

The problem is, it's not very effective if the person getting rescued is still attacking, and if it works the mob usually comes at you with full force.

So make a macro that does once you have targetted the person needing rescueing.

/shout %TT Hit Peace, I'm trying to rescue you now.

/rescue

Now I added a feature in my macro that has me then target the thing attacking my rescuee.

/assist

/ui action toolbarSlot08 (on my toolbar this is where I keep adhesive mesh traps)

This will have me target the mob, and throw an adhesiv mesh trap, hopefully working to keep it from immideatly running at me and killing me.
