Thread: How Does One Master Both Ranger and Squad Leader While Remaining Combat Effective?
any sentence that uses ranger and combat effectiveness in the same senctence, is clearly a oxymoron
You are right, my holo told me to Master Squad leader and I am dropping CH to go to Squad Leader. IMHO a squad leader is just that, a leader. You provide support for your troops and should be more interested in seeing the group succeed. THROWING traps and making Camps are the support alot of groups need. For example, carabineers have an excellent knockdown attacks but no dizzy. We have a few traps which have a dizzy effect, including an AOE dizzy stun trap in the RANGER line.
Like with any profession, its what you make of it.
By the way as a MCH/Master Ranger I only have pistols 1-4my other skills are in medic.
I've been considering taking up Ranger for a while, as a fun alternative to Master TKA - But to be honest... Whats the point?
They way I see things at the moment, Rangers have no weapon skills in their own right, and if the future plans for 'hunting blinds' are realised what good would a TKA/Ranger be?
Hope the Devs give Rangers some serious love... Personally I would like to see a low damage ranged weapon, which had a good innate chance of NOT causing the target to aggro. Add to this making camo cause you not to appear on an enemy's Radar, and hide your name tag when in PvP (although you'd still be selectable if the target 'looked' at you) and you're well on the way towards having a good Elite profession which stands on it's own two feet, without merely being a repository for dabblers or requiring a secondary profession to be of any value.
Anyway, sorry to post out of the blue, but I really quite like the idea of being a Ranger, so I hope it is made worthwhile!

On my suggestion above, the ability to conceal yourself from the radar in PvP would probably have to be at master level to keep it from dabblers, and should only last until you make an attack, after which you would have to get out of combat, and recamo yourself again before making another attack (Small timer?)

You have to make the decision whether you want to be a good group "leader" or a combatant. Yes I know traditinoally, and in most RL cases the great leaders were also good combatants. But we are limited by SP, and in RL, not all great leaders were great combatants.
I always thought that Ranger and Squad leader were a fantastic combo and compliment each other greatly. If are going to focus on primarily being a hunt leader, and leading groups, then I think it is not a problem that you are not dealing high damage. That's why you have the group to begin with, so you can deal out great damage and have a higher chance of survival. If this is your goal for a character, then go for master ranger and master squad leader.
If you want to do a lot of solo hunting and being out there on your own, able to go anywhere and be safe, then mastering both Ranger and SL is not going to work. At this you want master ranger, and some master, or close to it, combat skills. This way you can take down the cool bigger beasts on your own, and you don't need the skills for leading a group.
It sounds like you want to be a good group leader, and lead hunts out and be the best at getting the group there, safely, giving them an edge, and keeping them safe. If that's true then I would go ahead and get master ranger and master SL, and then skill 4 in marksman of your preffered weapons.
Rangers are not effective at all with out a combat class to back it up. For example you cannot properly play as JUST a Master Ranger, just the fact that you made Master Ranger with no combat skill is amazing, not impossible though. If you did this you would have to rely mostly on others with you.
