This is NOT a combat /abilities thread.

I'm just curious on what everyone wants as the theme of rangers.

Which of the following best suits your image of rangers.

Antarian Ranger (i didn't know the history from the books), But I see this being similar to the Babylon 5 Rangers style. There to protect, and serve a higher purpose. Please tell me if I'm wrong on the Antarian Ranger theme.

Hunting Rangers : Made to hunt and track down animal. Basically ment to leade people to the prey. like a safary guide.

Military ranger : Combat proficient.

Park Ranger : Ment to protect nature. (I had to add it )

If we know what Image we want, we can mold the skill arround it. (assuming the devs will ever look at rangers)

Antarian Rangers
a para-military group based on several planets, the Antarian Rangers were formed by Marus Timpel and Kaskutal on Antar 4, some 600 years before the Battle of Yavin. The mission of the Antarian Rangers was simply to assist and aid the Jedi Knights in any way possible, although they were most often employed as front-line troops in battlezones. They were trained to be masters of any environment, in order to meet the various challenges assigned to them. The Jedi Council refused to comment on their position toward the Antarian Rangers, although they allowed it to continute to grow and expand over the years. Many individual Jedi valued their assistance and dedication, especially in situations where military force was needed. In the coming centuries, as the Jedi Order became more conservative and insular, they began to turn away from the use of separate organizations like the Antarian Rangers. This meant that the amount of work available to the Rangers began to diminish, and the organization was forced to drastically reduce its manpower. During the Clone Wars, the Antarian Rangers were able to briefly expand their efforts in support of the Jedi involvement in the war. Unfortunately, whole groups of Antarian Rangers were killed off, and many of the survivors scattered and went underground. Those that remained loyal to the Jedi found themselves hunted down as part of Emperor Palpatine's Jedi Purge, further reducing the organization's size and scope. Only a few groups managed to survive the Galactic Civil War, but they were openly sought out by Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. In the years following the Battle of Endor, the organization grew slowly, but proved to be invaluable during the formation and protection of the Great River during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the galaxy. A mixture of Antarian, Hunting and Protector I think. Ive no interest in PvP, and I really dont want too see Ranger invaded by a bunch of leet kiddies who want stealth in PvP combat. Thats probably just me being a snob though

To be honest, I find myself not enjoying endless massacre for resources to sell. I had planned to open up my own creature resource business, but after 6 hours of hunting Quenkers for the current Dantooinian Leathery Hide, I just couldnt stand it, I find I enjoy having Ranger because it makes my character almost totally indipendant.

I can heal my own wounds(albeit slowly), I can recover faster after combat, I can track down whatever creature I want to hunt, I can forage food whenever my pets are hungry, I can roam the wilderness with almost no worry of being eaten by aggresive critters, its just fun to be a Ranger.

I would prefer we were given some kind of bonus when in combat with "big game" critters like Krayts and Kimos(but only at Master), as thats my aim in the game, to hunt each one of the biggest creatures and kill it myself. Just me and The Hunt, you know?

Ranger Calc here: I am a Hunter. I am here to kill animals, which is ironic since we have no skills that help us in the actual killing of the animals. I am not a harvester, but that is a secondary skill that I posess. I wish to have skills that male me the most proficient finder and killer of animals.

i like my rangers to follow a code - one that implies they protect those who need itand have uncompromising morals... to me, the ranger is a guide/helper for anyone out of their element.. it just so happens that the wilderness is the classic portrayal of "a dangerous place" - andthe reasona ranger has expertise in the wilderness is because so many people need help there... basically, a ranger excels at filling the holes in a group's abilities no matter what they are - thus ontheir own, rangers are very self-sufficient...

the antarian ranger is probably the best way for me to adapt my "ideal ranger" into star wars... a guide and soldiercommitted to a cause...

I'm thinking more along the lines of a guardian-guide. A ranger should be able to safely lead a group of people clear across dathomir, and defend againt snything that attcks. They should have very useful traps that get aggros off of players and allow them to escape attack. teh rescue skill is a step in the right direction, but still not enough.

My view of being a ranger:

1) I can track a bird on a cloudy day.

2) I have traversed lands that all else would be afraid to

3) I have flown from one end of the galaxy to the next and have seen a lot of strange things.

4) My chosen weapon is the method by which I take down any beast

5) I dont waste a single resource on any animal

6) I return to the cities because I choose to.

&) I know the ebb and flow of the bio-spheres, I know where to hunt, when to hunt and how to hunt.

7) My traps are lethal and deadly to any target I throw them at.

8) I protect my friends and those who I choose when I am with them in the wild.

9) My Ranger skills enhance my weapon skills when employed against the animals in the wild.

10) When engaged in the GCW, I use my traps, my tracking and my camps to aid, rescue, support my cause.

11) With my weapon of choice, I am deadly to any animal I cross paths with

12) While in the wilderness, I can slip unseen past any animal or sentient.

13) Fear the ranger who knows your soft spot, and has the ability to exploit it. While I may not deal the most damage, I know exactly where to hit to make you fall.

Antarian Ranger : Using the SWG lore (and the Bab5 works too)

Hunting Rangers : Made to hunt and track down and kill using great tactics/traps/skills(insert anything in the wild NPC, PC etc). (not just a guide)

my one rant

/ranton

there are 2 top level prof that require 2 full starting to master BH and Commando. They should be the best pure damage providers in the game period

there are 3 professions that require 1 full starting professions to master CM (they have 1 extra tree also) , Doc and Us

I feel we should be on par with the skill level that CM and DOC can offer to themselves and the community in a Antarian/Hunter way.

I would like to keep off the turf of BH (interplanetary man hunt, massive damage) and the Squad Leaders territories. But would like Master Ranger to be on par with the Skill Points it requires. (well you could consider that a combat balance, lol)

/rantoff

There have so many great posts along this way, Outdoorsman - Stealth - Hunting Cabin - Etc, that I really thinktheseall contain "my" version of what a ranger should be. I feel the more great ideas we have the better opportuninty we have to get some of them noticed by the Devs when it comes to Ranger Love time.

We also need to have some good use in PvP as this iswhat SOE is basing the game around (as they should). What this "good use" is I am open to suggestion, as my character is a Ranger at heart (alway kinda has been, even when I was a doc) I will use whatever PvP stuff is introduced as best as I can.

To sum up: Antarian - Hunter Rangers with a pourpose in the GCW and the skills to make it all happen based on the skill points we invest

I addition I like what Agon said in his nice post
