Well, i've been getting a bit bored with the game, so i decided to mess up my uber PVE template, and drop Teras Kasi. I am slowly picking up Pikeman now. I am at TK 4-4-3-0 and Pikeman 0-0-1-3.

I'm just curious what the fellow Rangers think of Pikeman as a PVE combat profession for creature hunting.

I'm most interested in hearing Pros and Cons of Pikeman compared to TKM.

Here's what I've found so far:

Pikeman:

Accuracy sucks at low levels (con)

Kinetic and Electric Damage (pro)

Medium Armor Piercing with Long Vibro Axe (pro)

Very slow (con)

Really awesome animations for the special attacks (pro)

I think the #1 thing i'm going to miss from Teras Kasi will be the meditation tree. a TKM can laugh at any poison or disease any creature can throw at you. now i'll have to be more selective on what i attack, because i don't have enough skill points to master Pikeman and also have the meditation line of TK.

so what do you guys think of Pikeman?

Pike is a good fun proffession to play. Plus you have the bonus of all the uber pikes that are looted. TBH i would rate pike better than tkm at master level for PVE. The AP and high damage really help cut down all the mobs. I see your point about meditate... however poisons n disease arent going to be much of a problem if you hunt buffed a lot of the time. Novice medic would help tho

Pikeman... I have mixed feelings about this .

Kope has been Pikeman for quite some time, I really liked Pikeman, however what drove me away from Pikeman at the end was that the insane amount of time or cash I'd need to spend on loot-weapons that can somewhat 'match' regular non-lootenhanced swordsman weapons is something I was not able (time) or willing (cash) to endure for much longer (if you look for polearms that can match good lootmade swordsman weapons the situation gets even worse).

If you have the patience to slay millions of Nightsisters yourself (while being unable to touch Nightsister Elders unless you get your hand on a quite expensive Nightsister Energy Lance which btw is just as bad as all other crafted Polearms) or if you want to spend tons of credits on weapons (most expensive profession to play among the regular combat professions if you aim at the "high end" IMHO) or if you can handle using the definitly heavily gimped crafted Polearms (which are btw not at all enhanceable via loot), go for it, it sure was fun to play .

Really? my crafted Long Vibro Axe seems like a great weapon at this point. i'm a Pikeman 0-0-1-3 and I have a long vibro axe with around a 400 max damage and a 3.2 speed on it. i am fairly sure it's been sliced. i also have a regular vibro lance (the electricity weapon) with a 345 max damage on it, and i'm not sure about speed.

do the DOT weapons help much in PvE? i NEVER pvp at all, but i always hear about poeple using uber mind DOT NS Lances in PVP, but never heard of poeple using em in PvE

i was a part pikeman for a bit i really liked it, i was a trandosain bio, but had to drop pike cause i went chef too,, now bio is gone went shipwright, and it was the worst decission i ever made.

i was toying with this, the pikeman ranger, but i have one comment, pikeman would go much better with carbiner, as they both do action damage, swordsmen go much better with riflemen, and pistolers and fencers.. just matching up specials. Especially after combat revamp when use of specialls is going to be much more sparing. taking some distance shots and switching weapons you will want to be working on the same bar,,

That being said i hate carbines with a passion, but love pikes.. I acually came up with a bio ranger template that if i ever unlock im going to do,, master bio, master scout, ranger 0-0-1-0, pikeman, 1-0-4-4, medic 0-1-0-4, give some nice defence incase your mask breaks, bio to make the uber pets, ranger to track those nasty critters, master scout well you need it for ranger but also the bonus in mask is huge in DNA sampling, and diag, just to boost your heal time slightly : ) ohh cant i unlovk today and make him,,

Pikeman is fun, but for some reason has become the FOTM....

But when the popular crowd drops Pikeman for something else, it'll be nice again to be rare.

I have a pikeman / tracker, it's a really nice combo. The area attacks are the best of any profession, I usually just run into a group of creatures, start spinning like a top, harvest and then repeat the process.

I was a Master Pikeman and Ranger for a while and i loved it! It has some of the best area attcks in the game, it has moves which will lay a state on every creature around you and another one to knock them down, and yet another to mop them up with. So i could kill fast and and harvest fast. I once harvested 100k of some Carnivore meat in about two days!(one weekend). Also if you ever PvP, you have some of the best DOTS in the game. I once killed a Master TKA, Master Swordsman and Master Bounty hunter in one fight, three on one! I had a awesome mind poison, good foods and great armor. I just held out while the poison ticked away. So in short Two thumbs up for the Pikeman-Ranger combo, you will not be disappointed.

I'm also starting this template, I've been a ranger before which is why i thought Ranger Pikeman would be a good combo, although Dizzy knockdown does no good against creatures it sounds fun anyways.
