Thread: A late night, just-about-to-fall-asleep idea

I was thinking...

There are currently two elite professions that are geared toward creature knowledge, ranger and CH. Both professions can be considered broken, or at the very least, hobbled-- one from lack of attention/completion since launch, and the other from a huge nerf since shortly after launch. Why not combine them into one prof? Tracking and trapping could be melded into one Stalking tree (does the ranger trapping tree really add enough to be a separate tier right now?), and camo and camping can be melded into one Survival tree. The first two CH trees can become one Taming tree, and the latter two can be a single Tactics tree. Let's face it-- the devs will never make either prof viable for PvP, and as professions that are supposed to excel at PvE, we're easily outdone by the PvP profs. Rangers and CH's stick with their profs because they like the concepts and they still manage to have fun in the face of adversity. But is it too much to ask for a little more than that?

Okay, I'm done. I know this is never going to happen and when I wake up in the morning and read this, I'll have a 'what the hell was I thinking?' moment. But it makes sense now, damn it.

You know, thats a DAMN GOOD idea!

I've never had any aspirations of becoming a CH, but it might be nice to have a nice pet, with high kinetic resists and my trusty rifle to go hunting with...

I wonder what the CH's would think of this idea?

Nooooooo

CHs and Rangers are antithetical to one another.

CHs tame and love and feed the little creatures, and feed them, teach them, nurture them, until they grow into something useful. Nature's little helpers.

Rangers kill and harvest the lil turdwhackers without regard to race, creed, color or national origin. If it has the resource I want/need/desire, it's going down. Move outta the way Mother Nature, that Huf Dun needs harvesting.

When and if we ever get attention, I see that in PvP CHs will be the natural target of Rangers. CHs pull out a pet, and the Ranger gets to use traps on it to neutralize it and then attack the CH master. I said when and if.

I agree you could combine both professions into one, but how? Would the MCHs get the other trees automatically? Would we get the other trees automatically if Master. What if you were a dabbler in both, would you get hosed in the merge? Not a bad idea overall, but I really don't want to play with my resources.

I fail to see how rangers and CHs are 'antithetical' to one another.

I always take my trusty Gurreck out hunting with me, he's just as 'out to kill' as I am (now if I could only keep him from eating that precious Avian meat).

And, in RL, people have long used hounds to help with hunting. Something to think about.

Also don't forget CH's have to get the Hunting tree in Scout first. Sure you can get it by just wandering round with mask scent. But the fastest way to get it is to go out and mass murder every nuna/kreetle/torton/huf dun whatever in the galaxy. Then creature handlers tame the babies to kill the creatures parents, cousins, sisters, brothers etc...

The moral of this story? Ummmmmm, CH's are probably as evil as us Rangers. We're all hunters at heart . I dont know about merging the two professions together though. How about giving rangers a little boost in the max level of creatures we can have?

I disagree, the idea has merit, but CH and Ranger are two separate professions. Like JB said, rangers are more hunters. We dont control or attempt to befriend the creatures, we hunt them. I know we all want our professions to be fixed, but I dont think merging the two will fix the problem.

I see your point JB, but I am going to have to respectfully disagree. I think the tie that binds here is that both professions are founded on a deep understanding of creatures and use this knowledge as a way of life. You're comment would be more valid if CHs never killed a creature, but that's simply not true. And at the same time, not all rangers go out and 'power hunt' ALL the time. While I do see your point, I disagree.

Neat idea Al... I'm always a fan of "simple things done well". This would also give us better return on our investment of skill points! I just worry that some of the much needed (and highly anticipated) improvements to Ranger would get lost in the mix.

THis idea has actually come up several times before. I would still rather see Ranger and CH both become great professions in their own right than smush them together. Somehow I would feel that I had ended up with one profession that is less than either of the two were alone.

If I want a hunting companion I will spend the points to learn how to control him.

I don't think Paks needs to spend too many skillpoints on it....she already has a whip. and handcuffs.

Oh and yeah, I've heard this idea before. Not saying it doesn't have it's merits-- the idea, at surface level, seems good. Fix two professions at once. But looking at the skilltree even after the merger, I'd say the profession would be weak. Traps still wouldn't work, creatures still wouldn't be that powerful. The problem is, if that happenend, NEITHER profession would be satisfied and the new combination profession wouldn't get any more work done on it. The big issues that both professions have would be lost. Rangers wouldn't get any of the new skills/traps/camps/etc. that they are asking for and neither would the CH's. Because if they did that too, they'd create a too-powerful profession. Me, I'd rather see two profession that need love get what they deserve rather than a mish-mash profession that still has the weaknesses of both of them.

Why merge them? just make it so that both have only 2 trees and we're all set.

BAM, extra couple of skill points right there.
