Thread: Ranger Traps!!!! an Idea

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but why don't master rangers 1) have more traps and 2) how about making ranger better for PvE and PvP by making traps that can be used against NPCs and player characters. I think that for the combat revamp, better traps would help make ranger a more uber profession than it already is.

From Fan Fest:

Q: Traps on NPCs and on other players - will we ever get this?

A: Scouts/Rangers probably will never get this. The design was that Scouts/Rangers are supposed to be hunters of creatures, while BHs are hunters of men. If traps are usable on players or NPCs ever, they will probably be for BHs.

I see now that alot of people have already thought of making traps for PvP, and I do agree with BH getting some sort of trapping ability. My point is right now being a ranger is only really good in a support role, so having traps be usable in PvP and against NPCs would make it so the ranger would be usefull in PvP. I think since the devs really want to focus on the GCW, PvP will be an intregal part of that, and having combat professions (which I believe ranger to be) that don't have a component that is useful in PvP will hurt the game. I see trapping as that component for a ranger. Mines protect a PA's base, I believe in PvP combat a rangers camp should be like a mobile base, and so there traps should represent a defense against oncoming attackers. Being a master ranger is a major profession in this game with alot of skill points required to achieve it, most major combat professions have support skills and combat skills for use against creatures, npc, and for PvP. I think it doesn't make sense to limit a combat profession like ranger this way and this profession deserves a major overhaul. Sorry to go off like this but I think ranger has alot of potential, and it needs some major tweeks to it. If anyone has feedback, or thinks I missed anything please let me know. Also what is the best way to let the devs hear what I feel. Thanks for reading this.

not to sound like a "grumpy old ranger", especially when i see the "new member" by your name on the forums, but this is the kinda stuff we've been going through for months. It's been a while since the last Ranger update so we've been round here waiting for a while for updates.

While I agree that Rangers SHOULD have traps (c'mon, we can trap animals 5-10 times the size of humans, but not humans??Bah) I think it's one of those issues that has become moot. We're not going to get it for several reasons. The big reason in my mind is that the devs see us as the PvE class (even though other classes are actually BETTER at killing creatures). Another big reason is that there simply aren't enough of us. If we were given PvP traps (or even traps that work against NPC's, every Bounty Hunter would be screaming at the Devs that THEY did the trapping tree in Scouts, too. Of course this doesn't make sense, since we do 8 boxes of trapping to get master Ranger, they only need 4. But because of their numbers compared to ours, SWG must cater to the allmighty $$.

The big issue now is that we don't end up only a PvE class. While I agree that Rangers should be the Ultimate Outdoorsman, I think that it's absolutely neccesary to our class as a whole to have a role in PvP combat, as well as the GCW as a whole. I think what we need to do is keep working amongst ourself to perfect the proposal that N'Rass worked so hard on while he was with us. This proposal was the defining document of the Ranger community. While we did not all agree with every point of the proposal, we all understood that it was in the interest of every Ranger to make *some* compormises.

That being said, I think we need to keep at it. SWG staff is currently busy of course with the Jump to Lightspeed and the Jedi revamp and the combat revamp. That means at least a couple of months until we are going to get an update. That gives US time to ensure that we have a defining idea of who we want to be.

For those of you who are new, or haven't read it yet, I strongly suggest reading the stickied threads (the threads at the top of the boards). The documents that I'm talking about (the outdoorsman proposal, as well as the discussion on Modular Camping, etc.) are all up there.

Right now we need to stop worrying about stuff that OTHER classes want, and are likely to get (such as this idea of PvP or NPC traps) and focus on what we want to be. I mean no offense to the author of this thread, I'm sure the threads dealing with this issue are burried at the bottom of the Ranger board, so I don't mean to insult you. I'm just saying for those of you who HAVE been around a while, I think it's time once again to come together with some new ideas of where we want to be when they get around to fixing us.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

First I have to say I'm sorry for not doing more research before I opened my mouth. Second I must say thank you for the link to the vision (it is incredible). Now I must be a stupid noob again and say "I still think we should have a greater PvP role". The ideas for bases are wonderful, the concealment gave me goosebumps, but I still think we need some sort of PvP weapon. I know that our traps our forcreatures, but at the very least we should have some sort of ground based traps that can work with PvP combat. Have you ever read about gorilla warfare, implementation of anti-personal trapsare a huge part of combat.I think we as rangers need to fight hard for some sort of profession specific weapon that can be used, and used in PvP as well. My argument against just giving BH humanoid traps is that the role of there traps is very different. They largely hunt crimnal prey and hardly align them selves to one political side in a war (unless they pay well). WhileI think aranger would align themselves when it came to the GCW.A bounty hunter should get thinks like dart guns and trap webbing, and various sorts of launched traps. A ranger shouldhave ground based traps, like I know have already been proposed, but it doesn't make sense that some of our traps shouldn't be usable in PvP as well. In context of GCW I see a ranger fighting on endor setting up traps to alter troop movement and to reek havok on supply lines, causing massive damage to AT-STs with powerfull traps that tangle there legs. We must fight for everything we need, as long as it makes sense for our profession to have it, and I think that all the things I've mentioned do make sense. The last thing I will say is everyone of us has a rightfor the devs topay attention to our needs, even though there may be fewer of us. Not just Jedi (which I believe could ruin this game) and bounty hunters (a profession that I see as our brother and one which should compliment us as we should complement there skills). We pay to play like everyone else, and in the end our shared vision for our profession counts because the devs have decided to make the mighty ranger part of this wonderfull game. The gamer dictates content, the developer creates it.

Then someone please explain to me why the hell we have the ability to track players and npc's!!! If we are not hunters of men, then take this skill away from us and give it to the BH's (especially so they can leave us the hell alone with all the tracking questions)

Jekker -

As we can track animals, it only makes sense we can also track people/players. Doesn't mean we can do a lot about them tho.

/AR is useful in PvP, stand 525 m away from your base, start tracking. When you get a large number of players in one direction, guess who is coming to dinner? Direct a couple of overts into their path to drop a turret or three. Or, as I like to do, get near them (covert), find some nasty old creatures, and run them thru the other guy's camp. Not only do you let them know you found them - it forces them to deploy early and start fighting the poor dumb animals. Besides being a pain, it really sucked when their doc, sitting on the ground buffing away on a macro, got ate by a sludge panther. Teach him to go get a soda.

BHs can track, except their droids cost money and are pretty stupid when it comes down to it. That and 80% of the BHs can't read a compass, so they need someone to hold their hands and guide them to the mark.

ZING!

Score:

JBMat: 1,263

Bounty Hunters: 3 (All 3 of these were instances of JBMat tripping over his own razor tongue)

of course now that I am a Ranger/BH (Ranger ALWAYS comes first, though) I should be hurt.....then again, I'm not a true BH 'cause I can act my age and NOT cry "nerf" every 5 minutes. I also refuse to use the phrase " Yooo SuXors" or "I am 3Li73, yu noob" unless I am making a point about how stupid some people can be. Thus, while I use an LLC to hunt my prey, I am NOT a true BH. I am just a little Ranger who lost his way.
