So here's the story.
A guild member just got Ranger from a holo. We are talking about a pa that is very into holo grinding (cept me) I admit I laughed. I offered a tip on survival and went back to shooting Womp Rats for the Wild meat.
Then I see "Anyone know if there's a Ranger Trainer....."
I reply, there's one shooting Womp Rats in Entha.
Now understand, alot of these guilies are highly skilled killers. So I get, why would I want to shoot rats?
/sigh Because my fellow players, the resources are not always great on a Rancor. Do I mind shooting rats? Heck no. I just imagine myself as Luke in his early days. I even drive my bus around. I can save 1k on cloning too.
To sum it up. It is a profession. Sometimes you just have to sweep the floor, other times it's an adventure.

I must have one of the greatest guilds out there. They completely understand me and my abilities (even the getting lost thing) and ask nothing more thanI am capable of. They also know that sometimes killing Rasps is done out of necessity and not malice.

A great way to live in my opinion!! And to back calc up, I got lost twice in town yesterday on my way to Dath (have a macro that says "looks up at Master Ranger tag, then remembers that I am useless in a city") but once there, I had a brand new alt character of a IRL friend with me, took down an Anchient bull rancor without armor and barely used my pet. Although I did help in the slaugher of 2 Brakaset herds, a few nightsisters, and a bunch of 8 legged freaks along the way (gotta love fan shot, you can harvest them all)
BTW I camo'd the alt and she only broke once the whole trip

With my +129 maskscent (and camo) I broke more often.I know some of the long time rangers are getting a little rough around the edges waiting on some changes to our profession, and the forum community has beaten to death most every idea, this is still the best place to be and the best group of players in-game I have ever met.

Some of my best days have been when I have no contracts to fill and I wander.....running across a planet. Wow...whats that....hmmmm....kill it!!!

Its a good life wandering around a planet killing anything that is unlucky enough to cross your path, but it has a draw back. (0% of the npc on naboo shoot me on sight now

My life as a ranger has varied wildly....
I remember the first time I mastered Ranger, I was fresh from the boredom, tedium and forums of being a 3.4.4.4 Bounty Hunter.
I picked up Ranger for two reasons.
1st, I read the description in the book and I thought that was one of the coolest professions I could ever do. I had a hard time choosing between BH and Ranger, but eventually, the decision became obvious.
2nd, I liked the camps. The first Ranger camp i visited was on Dathomir. I was hunting Rancor with a huge group of 20 people, back in September..I was a Novice BH, Novice Ranger, Novice CH. Off in the distance I saw a huge structure, I thought "wow, I found a house on Dathomir, wonder what it is?" I left the group for a bit, and saw a Ranger with the HTFB sitting there all by himself. At that point, I thought that I was going to be a ranger. The camps was what changed my mind... (back when there was such a thing called Field BioScience) I continued on my journey hunting people for cash, and eventually became a fairly competant BH. However, the BH missions were repetative, bugged and boring... no mounts, no vehicles... so an 8k hike was usually rewarded with a bugged mission.
Now, After mastering Ranger 3 times... (#4 is coming up soon) it has become a definition of my character.
and the forums are a nice place too
My life as a ranger alternates between being a mobile harvester, to an explorer, to a rescuer and to a devious vagabond in the middle of some planet just looking at trees and the little cool statues on Yavin.

when I came back to SWG after a short hiatus, these were my thoughts:
First, when I started out with a scout/marksman I was all excited that I'd have a speeder now and that I could rocket across whatever planet I'm on...... sounded sweet.
Once I got novice ranger, everything changed. I go almsot everywhere on foot (except when travelling with guild mates.... gotta get to those waypoints quickly you know), throwing an /areatrack now and then to see what's around, taking nice detours to pick on tortons or whatever, and generally enjoying the vast wildernesses I call home.
Now that I'm a master, yeah I own a house, but I'll be damned if my high tech field base isn't my home. I probably miss out on soem decent cash flow by not having a tag up, but I can laugh inwardly at the people filling this order or meeting so-and-so to set up a deal, or hanging around town using the crafting stations, etc., and then merrily wander back out into the woods.
This, my friends, is TOTAL FREEDOM.

I'm fortunate to have a Guild that respects me for who I am, not necessarily for what I can do...
I'm fortunate to havea wonderful profession that gives me freedom and creativity built into it...
I'm fortunate to have the support of other rangers and folks I've met throughout my travels...
And as I sit back and smile on my good fortune I can't help but wonder what it's like to be a different profession. Meeting schedules, having to do missions to survive, dealing with things on a reactive instead of proactive basis.
We're a different group, folks... and most of the populace doesn't even know that we exist. But we'll still go on protecting them from the unseen horrors this galaxy spawns...

I started the same as Draknev. 1/2 thru BH, part CH, and a Novice Ranger, way back when. I met a Master Ranger out in the wastes of Tatooine. I was pretty beat up, with no mounts and vehicles at the time. He said that I need to sit for a spell and heal up a bit. He pulled out a HTFB, and that was enough for me. He had some med skills and helped me out. I told him I didnt have alot of credits on me, but he was welcome to everything I had, and he turned it down. Just said he was glad to help out.
I don't even remember his name, but every Ranger I met before the holo-grind was the same as him. Honorable, gracious, and all around just good people.
I am lucky to be in a guild where have I think last count was 4 or 5 Master Rangers, 2 of them female, and 1 or 2 former Master Rangers that are now artisan or BE, I forget. Reyune would know for sure.
I think we are very lucky to be in a community where some moron (myself) can whine, and not get totally flamed for it. Simply for the fact that we are all in the same boat, and help each other through the up's and down's of being in a profession that we love to much to leave.
