Thread: To be, or not to be...a Ranger.
How many people working toward Master Ranger are doing so with the belief that they are pretty uninteresting and are counting on them getting improved later? Anyone other than me?
I want to be a Ranger because it fits the character model I have in my head of the SWG persona I want to portray. Of course I would expect the Ranger to have outdoor-related abilities (which it does) that will assist me in being able to explore the wide and varied worlds in the galaxy. But beyond that, I'm not too picky. My goal is to have a character I can happily "live in the Star Wars universe" with and whether or not the Ranger profession is "cool" or not has no bearing on my decision.
That said, I also do not expect the Ranger class to be static. After playing in a number of MMORPGS like EQ and DAOC, no class that I can think of there has remained the same as it was at release. I would expect the same here.
I agree with the above posts but I wouldn't expect too many changes to the Ranger profession in the near future. In an MMO environment, the least played professions tend to be the most static. This is because the more heavily played professions tend to generate a tremendous amount of noise, such that they get fixed quicker. And, judging by the amount of interest on this board, I's say that the number of Rangers in SWG could be counted on two hands at the moment. ![]()
I believe that the ranger class was too powerful to start with. As if the devs were trying to lure players into the class with some of the advantages. I tend to believe that even the nerf on Mask Scent is a good thing, a little long but correct. In absolute terms, it is not reasonible to believe that one should be able to run around a dangerously killing enviroment without being noticed the predatory creatures.
Secondly, the Ranger camps are worth while in group situations. Think of it this way, as part of the rebel alliance, your out with your combat team. your going to take down a smaller Imperial camp. Your team wipes out the camp, but your general decides that you need to establish a small base there. In comes the Ranger making the Base camp complete with crafting stations. Now the Architects have a place to craft materials and prepare to lay down additional structures, such as housing, perimeter fencing and such.
The possiblities are astounding from there. There are no player generated cities at the moment. Why? Because the game is so new. I believe that MANY MANY more cities can and will spring up from a rangers camp, especially since I believe the higher ones that i mentioned do not disappear until destroyed. Making perfect temporary bases for both the Rebel Alliance and Imperial outposts.
As for Masked Scent. On Endor, the Imperial Scouts had Jet bikes. Why do you suppose that was? For the cool cycle scene in the movie? Shortly, there will be an update to the game which will allow us to RIDE ANIMALS and other vehicles. Simply negating the need for Mask Scent as a means of undetected travel. This is percisely the reason they ride Elephants in the jungles of Africa. A lion will attack a man, but not very likely while riding an elephant.
Please have a little faith and look up from time to time. Just because you can not see a plan coming together does not mean that there is not a plan. Nor should you believe that the devs are ignoring you. The devs have a lot of content they are still trying to add to the game. This game is so new and the beta was short; how, can one honestly critize something that is not older than 6 weeks? How many Player built cities were in the beta?
I like the idea behind a Ranger. I like the path that must be traveled to become a Master Ranger. I don't fully understand why certain things are the way they are. I am sure that the path has its purpose, even though it seems some of the pieces are missing atm. Marvel at the possiblities at hand, instead of focusing on game imbalancing exploits.
Well, unfortunately Avocet, the ranger traps don't appear to work.
I like the idea of the ranger profession, but it's disheartening that one of the coolest things about rangers( I just love those scout traps),namely the ranger traps, don't even work.It appears I made bad choices in everything I want to do in this game.My combat leanings have been toward carbine, but now I hear that the high level carbine weapons can literally suck the life out of you because of the high BAM pts for the specials.
Game balance issues and profession "tweaking",I can live with(and expect),but **edit**,we should at leat be able to use the "features" we're presented with upon opening the box and installing the game.
