Thread: New to Ranger, any tips?

Hello everyone.
I just started ranger last night for a few reasons. First I really want some of that BH armor and I figured this would be any easy way to find the little bastages. I also want to use my areatrack to help me on the upcoming FS quests.
My question is, are there any tips on using areatrack more efficiently? Are there any bugs with areatrack I should be aware of?
My current strategy is this. I go to Yavin and mark a waypoint as far away from the starport as possible in a straight line from the starport. I then jump on my bike and drive 600m. After stopping I dismount and use areatrack to search for any peeps. If I find nothing I mount again and drive another 600m. Lather, rinse, repeat.

My tracking method is similar. I stop every 400-500m so there is a little overlap, and I try to wait 10s or so to let the spawning catch up to my location. An even better better method is to have a buddy or 2 ride around you to stir up spawns. 600m is probably too far in between stops as 500m is the max tracking range, though some would argue that they have tracked further than that.

The 10 second waiting period that Calc mentions is very important. It's sort of embarrassing to be out tracking creatures for people, doing scans, saying that there's nothing nearby, only to trip over a krayt dragon 50m away from you.... 
As far as how often to track, I'd say it depends on the area and how much missed area is acceptable to you. If you ride out 600m between scans, you'll cover a greater area much more quickly, but you might miss something in the unscanned areas. Still, if I'm in a hurry to find something quickly and hoping to get lucky, I'll generally do exactly that, except I very seldom ride out more than 500-550m between scans. Conversely, if you want to be sure nothing's there, 400m is pretty accurate.
If you know the area you want to track in pretty well, and if you have the preparation time beforehand, you might find it helpful to create a bunch of waypoints at the various stages you want to track. I hold on to these myself, since I know that I'm going to be out there tracking the same thing again sometime soon. The search pattern I use for finding krayts, for example, has always brought me pretty good luck (made 3 million tracking a krayt for the first Jedi on our server to complete the trials, woo hoo!).
Experience is the best teacher, though. For finding the rare mobs, knowing the ranges that they spawn in and how closely to look, as well as looking for associated spawns that are slightly more common, is something that can only be gained by being out there. Sure, whenever something like the trials or the hero of Tatooine quest comes up, people will post where to find things on the forums. You'd be surprised, though, how often this information is incorrect or incomplete.

Thanks for the tips guys. While waiting for a reply I found my first Blacksun spawn on Yavin. Drove all over the planet and found a group less than 1.5km away from the outpost. 
BTW, any tips on the Blacksun guys specifically? Has anyone found areas they seem to spawn more often?
PS. Ouch those BS guys hit hard. Got my butt whooped. I'm a TKM, not used to dying so quickly.

I am new to Ranger as well and still learning about the profession. I admit I'm doing it for one of my last gasp attempts at the hologrind, but I'm very intrigued by the tracking abilities and conceal since I'm already a Master Rifleman.
So what are the BH armor and spawns you're referring to? I haven't been to Yavin much.
Likewise I read in other threads about Rangers tracking a Peko Peko Albatros for feathers, and selling them to armorsmiths - what are they used for?
Also read somewhere about a Ranger being paid by a jedi to track a Krayt Dragon for the jedi's trials. I haven't been able to keep up with all the jedi changes, but it sounds neat.
Any tips on what to hunt to for a good ratio of Scout XP / time? I'm currently doing Crimson Blurrgs on Endor because I can use the cash at this point and they're pretty easy for a buffed Master Rifleman.

1. Black Sun NPCs drop Bounty Hunter armor which can be turned into mandalorian armor in the bunker
2. Feathers are a compnent in RIS armor
3. Jedi trials require them to find and kill a certain number of a certain creature. Tracking is the easiest way to do that (find them).
I prefer Endor for all my hunting. Doctors always need avian, Combat Medics need insect meat (I think) and armosmiths need wooly hide. Those are a few high selling items. You need good OQ/PE on the meat and good OQ/SR (?) on the hide.

I notice you play on the Kauri server. My tip would be to join the RIN (in-game chat channel). It's used mostly for buying/selling creature resources, but definitely not limited to it. It's a good place to visit if you're looking for some tips or help in mastering Ranger. Plenty of people drop in to hire rangers for tracking too.

I'll second that post about RIN. I'm usually always on there while I'm playing. It's a great way to network to find buyers for resources, get training, or get hired by a non ranger.

Thanks for the answers and info. I'm on Chilastra (just updated my profile) so I hope there's something similar to the RIN on our server. I'll snoop and ask around on the Chilastra boards.

Hey briforge,
I think the idea was first started by Fred on Wanderhome.. Serje got one started on Kauri, but it can easily be done on your server. The toughest part is just getting the word out to other rangers and anyone buying creature resources or wanting to hire rangers.
Just right click your Spatial tab and select "Join Channel". From the menu on the left, 'create channel'. Name it "RIN" with a description of "Ranger Information Network". Just be sure to make it public and unmoderated.. it's temporary, so it will have to be created every morning when the server comes up, but after a few days of exisiting and having visitors it'll probably be running 24hrs a day.

If I don't need money right away, I generally trip over to the trade forum and see what people are buying for meat/hide/bones. Then I go collect it. This is a great way to build clients. Currently, I have a few regular clients that send me emails for what they want and how much they are willing to pay. I always have something to do when I sign on now

I actually found a Master Ranger on Naboo last night and another Novice. On the RIN list for each server, for Chilastra, only 2 of the names were online and they had both dropped Ranger.
