So I'm wandering around Tatooine, minding my own business, doing my thing when an aquaintance gets in touch, says he's wanting to do some Rancor hunting on Dathomir. I think ok, not done any hunting there, it'll be good for a change of scenery. So off we head, he can't get enough people for Rancors,I should have realised something was off here,so the two of us select a few Nitch missions and head off into the wild. Head to first way point, he jumps off his speeder and wades into combat......with a couple of Ancient Rancors. I'm thinking this is brave for someone marked as a novice brawler but hey, I start throwing mesh and sonic pulse traps at em, and I'm loving it, just under 1.5k xp a trap but surprise, surprise, a few seconds later I hear "RUN" and watch as he zooms off on a handy speeder, dragging a couple of Rancors after him. I stand there looking a bit bemused before wandering over to the nearest friendly npc's, all the while he's yelling run. But eventually he loses them and finds me, he's looking more than a bit worse for wear but I patch him up. I should have left at this point. He tries to tell me I selected Rancor missions before realising he'd picked them himself. No apologies or anythiing but I figure, hey no point in getting pissed. So we continue onto the next mission, Nitchs. I'm lobbing traps and doing what I do best, he's landing a few blows and everythings going well. Good xp and enjoyment all around. Then just as we finish one mission, he announces he has to go to school and logs, leaving me on my own on Dathomir about 2 kilometres from the nearest Outpost.
I'm a little bit peeved at this point, specially as there's this big mite stood nearby, eyeing me up. Trusty mask scent however meant he just stood thinking I was part of the landscape. So there I am thinking ok, deep breath, you can get out of this. boot up crafting tool, look for Dathomir camoflage, see if I can get the parts. Whoops, not a high enough level. Ok, plan B, it's going to have to be scent masked and a bit of footwork. Waypoint for the Outpost, check. Mask scent, check. Ok, off we go. Trundling along, stopping every hundred metres or so to make sure I'm not stumbling into big ugly beastie and the whole thing is becoming less of a panic and a chore to get back because things are getting interesting. This is a challenge, a test. If you're going to be a ranger you should be able to get back without any grief I tell myself and set about it with renewed fervor.
So wandering along, seeing parts of Dathomir I'd usually only see in passing at high speed, bloody hilly place! And I'm passing some big beasties, A couple of lairs of Malklocs but hey, they don't seem to care. Any red dots appearing are being examined closely and long detours being taken and in this way I've closed the distance to about 1 kilometre. At which point my camo breaks and some creature streaks towards me, I turn tail, apply burst run, and remembering a guide I'd read to do with use an hilly terrain to create distance I'm legging it up and down hills like there's no tommorrow and sure enough the creature, whatever it was, loses interest before my lungs give out. I'm almost back to where I started.
Not giving up yet and off I head again, get a lot closer this time, perhaps just under a kilometre to go but now I have hostile npc's on one side and a group of Shear Mites on the other. Which is a worse fate, lasers or teeth? Masked scent only works on creatures so teeth it is. I'm inching by, and the Mites couldn't care less but one of the npc's still catches a glmipse of me and starts creating a ruckus. I start running again and he's a pretty crap shot, cos there's green laser beams carving an outline around my pounding feet. But sure enough, he gives up and I manage to pull up just short of a group of Purbole Hunters. But they break my mask scent anyway and 3 or 4 you are being stalked by a purbole hunter messages pop up. I sidle off, trying to make like a tree and manage to avoid them long enough to re mask my scent. I continue on and finally the walls of the Outpost loom out of the dank mist. Hurrah! Now to get off this rock and get a bloody beer!
But.....lessons learned:-
1) Ranger kicks absolute ass. What other character can hike across Dathomir and only get aggroed by 1 creature and 1 npc and further more get away from them without having to fire a shot?
2) Did I mention Ranger kicks ass?
3) This game should come with an age limit...or have a server set aside for all those 16 and under. Wishful thinking methinks.
4) This is perhaps the most fun I've had in game so far, and it wasn't even a requisite mission.
5) There was a post to do with a Ranger initiation ceremony I read.... would it not be more than a good laugh to have said ceremony at one side of a planet or area and the initiate has to walk across to it unmolested?
6) If this is Ranger when people are complaining about it, whats it going to be like if they ever 'fix' it?

Nice!
Though I have to disagree on one point - I've met some pretty cool 16 year olds in this game and a lot of real idjits who are closer to 30.
Not counting myself of course.

Hehe, yep, Ranger rocks.
Walking around the village, unarmoured, unbuffed, I felt decidedly 'newbish' compared to all the "SpamInACan, 3k buff gotta watch my timer PLEASE don't DB me or i've got to go back to C-net and queue AGAIN". So I went out and did some missions for that nice Whips bloke. Kills some Sith and bring back some wandered village people.
So, off I set into the wilds, some brandy, some food and my rusty trifle in hand. All I needed was to find a fireman, a construction worker... doh, wrong Village People. k k, so I get out there, take my time, place my shots, drop the bad guys, bring home the silly wandering villagers... Died once, dangit, meant I had to drive all the way (8km) back out, but hey, its a pretty planet. (Yeah, right)
Am back in the huts, cooling my heels, working out whether I wanted to go see the Singing Mountain Clan or the Nightsisters when a SpamInACan challenged me to a duel. Yup, big brave 'novice marksman' with almost as many badges up as me, about 6 professions mastered, so he could be TK, could be BH, but for sure accepting his duel would be bad news.
I offered to fight him, unarmoured, unbuffed if he would walk back to the Outpost with me. Y'know what? He agreed to do it. So, I slap cammo on us both, tell him it'd make things 'more fair' (hey, i might as well get some XP before he gets chomped) and set off at a trot.
Just out of the mist, up a hill, blob of red dots. I'd a hunch it was what I was hoping and headed on towards it. Matey's at my side, getting a bit tired and asking if I'd rather not fight here, he was going to pwn me anyway. 10s later theres a family of rancor bearing down on us, sorry, him as I flag peace, walk way and go stand quietly by a tree.
Poor lamb didn't get a chance to cuss me, or ask if I'd help him, before he was away off on the Clone Express to DecayLand. Me? I just walked round the long way, then got on my bike and headed to the other Outpost, jic.
I might be vindictive, but am not stupid.

Nice experience... there is something about pure fear and terror that equates to fun.. ive had similar experiences too.
and sadly... stupidity has no age limit... i can tolerate immaturity and ignorance, but to be mean and stupid requires age and practice.

I never pull a vehicle on dath unless I need to make a quick trip trip to the village. (I always see people speeding around in av-21's on dath-- how stupid is that?) Anyway, I have this 2 square km spot about 6km from the science outpost where I'm usually pretty lucky at finding black suns. Just walking out there takes a while and is always a blast, because there are plenty of Nightsisters to fight along the way. After getting there and spending an hour or two hunting out the area for black sun spawns, I walk back to the outpost, taking a somewhat different route and continuing to battle nightsisters along the way. The whole process takes about a buff session, and is incredibly fun. (I'm not a total 'spam in a can' guy, either;my only armor is a chestplate and boots. Though I do make liberal use of headshot and concealshot.)
Between camo, areatrack, and plain old common sense, there's nothing a solo ranger can't do on dathomir (depending on combat prof, of course-- I avoid NS elders at all cost), and nowhere we can't go easily and on foot.
Dath is quickly becoming my favorite adventure planet again. If you don't use your ranger skills well, you'll die horribly. Unless you're an ub3rl33tpwnz3r, of course. But no Ranger is.

I'm a youngin' compared to lots of people on this forum, but I think I keep myself under control, for the most part.
BTW, I'm turning 22 this year. YIKES, I feel old all of a sudden.
