Thread: I want carbines
I imagine a lot of people who have mastered weapons other than carbine aren't really looking forward to regrinding to a new weapon (unless they managed to keep their token respec handy, of course. I imagine I'll be popping mine open the first day of the new era). I plan to adapt to whatever prereq they stick us with as quickly as possible, and see what happens from there.
Not sure I would use a resepc to regrind any ranged profession.
If its case of just not wanting to then go for it get the template ahead of time that you envisioned.
However if Ranger turns into something you don't like in the end having that respec as a safety is kind of nice.
It might take what a week to grind from rifles to carbine in casual play.
it's not having carbines per se, but the fact that we're being strongly pushed to get one or two templates.
if you have a single line of marksman, that profession becomes favorable for skillpoint reasons. Carbines are fine for me, but why should Riflemen/Rangers have to spend 14 extra SP to get their skills? That restricts them from picking up Master Scout if they want it for hunting critters.
and what about melee Rangers. having carbines or marksman pre-reqs leaves them with 9 skillpoints, while other get 38 or more. That's the issue here-- it's not whether carbines are good weapons, but how forcing Rangers into carbines affects Rangers who have other templates.

I understand your points, and they are certainly valid. IMO the devs took a lot of heat because there was too much melee in this game Pre-CU. So much melee that ranged professions, other than rifles, were useless. I would imagine that the Lucas folks have mentioned this and now the focus for non-jedi combat is ranged.
If my suppositions are correct, then we should expect Ranger to have a ranged pre-req. There are four choices; ranged support, pistols, carbines or rifles. Ranged Support is out because, with Exploration 4 you would have the same pre-req as bounty hunter and squad leader (i think??). Pistols are out because of Smuggler and that pistols don't fit the image of the modern ranger. IMO rifles are out becuase the movement speed is too slow for a ranger. So we are left with carbines.
I know its difficult to grasp, that melee rangers will be very gimped. We BHs had the same thing happen to us when they changed the requirement for Jedi bounties from Inv3 to MBH. Gone were the melee BHs of the pre-CU days.
I would not be surprised if they removed melee classes from the game except for Jedi and Teras Kasi.
Moreover, I think that a lot of Rangers really like the current skills, which will revert to Scout, and many are thinking of keeping both Scout and Ranger. With the change to the ranger Prereqs, that will not be as easy to do. I think therein lies the rub.
