Thread: Ranger only weapon: Trap Gun
I dunno shooting existing traps seems kinda silly. That thing would have to have one HUGE barrel to shoot some of them.
Maybe something along the lines of a tranquilizer gun? That might be a cool idea.
The Animal Control people here at the county where I work have this gadget called a "Net Gun." It looks like a short-barreled shotgun with 4 weights on the end. When you fire it, the weights spread out and stretches the net to snare small animals like raccoons and opssums and whatnot. For large animals like cows, deer and whatnot they use tranquilizers.
Interesting idea, but I hope they fix what we have first.
I'm not sure I like this idea very much. However I do like the idea of a ranger specific weapon.
Personally I would want a hunting gun. One that is good for hunting animals but not so good for PvP, and for which only Rangers get a cert.
With how things are set up now, we can do a lot to animals, we can do a lot to their corpses, yet to kill them, we need to master a whole seperate combat profession. While at the same time, we have more prerequisits for our profession to even start working on the Ranger profession.
Personally I would be ok with adding the rifle tree from Marksman to the requirements to become a Ranger and let us use a special hunting rifle. I'm not sure everyone would like that, maybe just give us the option to. Now I'm forced to pick up either pistol for it's low melee penalty (which does not totally fit in my image of a Ranger), or go Rifleman and be dead meat once any mob starts pounding you. Doing both is not an option since we'll never be good enough to hunt the tougher mobs due to a lack of skill points.
Personally I see our lack of means to kill by doing direct damage as the single most important thing that is missing in our profession. I can see that choice having been made for a starter profession like Scout, but for an elite profession like Ranger I would have expected some means to actually kill a creature in our profession. Yet, anything we do for our profession is evolved around killing creatures. Better even, we are creature killing experts, yet our own profession only lets us weaken them, so that others can kill them and then we can pick their corpses.
So I'm totally for a Ranger weapon with maybe some requirements outside of Ranger to use it properly, but I don't really see use for a trap launcher. If I'd have to choose anything, it would be a Ranger specific rifle.
When it comes to traps, maybe we could get a way to experiment on the crafting of them to change their attributes. One of them could be max range. This seems to be more in line with the current system as a whole to me.

Kivech.
I'm not in the Ranger tree yet, but htis sounds like a great idea. Perhaps it could be a rifle with melee possibilities. Rifle with bayonet so to speak that way you get the best of both distance and close up damage.
Just my 2 cents

Making the rifle line a requirement to be a ranger is a terrible idea. No offence, but I'm a pistol guy, and I don't see why I shouldn't be able to use a pistol as a Ranger. Contrary to popular myth, not EVERY ranger is also a rifleman. And the problem with a Ranger only hunting rifle is that you would probably require rifle skills in order to use it to its maximum potential. I like that you're thinking about things, and it's an interesting idea, but let's not forget about the rest of us.
As for a Ranger only weapon, I like the idea, and a trap gun is an example of a weapon that would be indiscriminate against pistol/rifle/carbine users (i.e. no matter what your preferred weapon, you can use it well). I REALLY like the idea of Rangers being able to launch traps from the full 64m range, but with the new traps coming, that may be rendered moot.
Maybe they could just boost the damage we do to mobs.
A friend of mine came up with this and I thought I would see what you guys thought.
TRAP GUN
We are always looking for something that makes us unique. Rangers could have a gun that "shoots" traps to get the extra range that we are currently lacking. It could have its own look/graphics/sound.
Pros: Its unique to Rangers, full ranged traps, uses exsiting traps as "ammo", Must be created by high-level weaponsmiths, can use it prone under cover, and it looks really **edit** cool.
Cons: Slow rate of fire, must switch to a combat weapon to start doing damage
Please add your own ideas/comments to my list.
Great comments. I would agree with Jedijazz that this weapon would not be dependent on any of the current weapon lines.
I think having this weapon be its own characteristic will not pigeon-hole Rangers into being rifleman. I carry a carbine for example. I don't see how Rangers would ever get a weapon that was not in our line of training, hence the trap gun idea. I would not expect a weapon to be effected by frontiering xp or scout xp, but trapping seems pretty logical.
The comment about the "net gun" was sort of what I was imagining what the gun would look like. The animation/effects alone might be worth it. ![]()
Make some traps something that can be applied to any weapon as a power-up. Calculate TrapXP when the critter dies.
