Alright, Im sure it's been asked a million times, but I will ask again. Im presently going for Ranger on the Wanderhome server, a little difficult considering I play between midnight and 4 am pst, which makes training near impossible, but thats not what Im posting about. What I really want to know is what is the best secondary profession to be in?
Is a side of Creature Handling best with a bit of ranged weapon support? Or is the TKA, maybe some heavy sword? I've always wanted to be a Ranger, playing on another server I never got around to it.I made Novice Ranger, but my guild needed an armorsmith real bad, so off I went...into crafting deadzone. I enjoyed it the one day I had it. After that I never got back around to getting back my scout skills and pursued the dubious profession of Doctor. In the back of my mind was the tickling feeling that I was missing something...that something was lacking. Then I realized what it was! I always wanted to be ranger, so I off I went. To a brand new server!!! Now I wasn't lacking anything but everything I needed to do the job. Being resourceful, I dragged my sorry bum around spaceports looking for that rare master scout to train me in trapping 4...never did find one, so off I went to the local trainer and spent half my money on training.
Then,

darn thing cut me off, to continue my story...
Where does a new Ranger go, but off to Endor, to hunt some furry creatures. Maybe my new trapping skills will come in handy. I know the 34 multi-person tents I have sure will. But much to my dismay I am killed by everything that I see. Not only do my traps not work, but my fwg-5 pistol seems to be seriously lacking in the stopping ability of anything larger than a gnort.
So, here I am, a lonely Ranger on a lonely server looking for a little advice from others.....which way is best for a solo Ranger?

As a first step, you mau want to check out this recent thread. It has a lot of info on different Ranger-based templates people use, and why. There are probably 3-4 other good threads further back, and countless minor ones.

Lonely server? Send tell to Nikiro on Wanderhome (that wookiee is not a ranger there, but I am on Shadowfire, same account.) Just not often there...
/chat join RIN Think that is the ranger channel on Wanderhome. Find some other rangers on there, whom I am sure will happily train you to help save some credits. And help you in-game for anything tactical things you may need.
It doesn't hurt our class correspondent is on the same server as ya. So not that lonely. Once you get novice pistoleer, try dantooine. I mastered both my profeesions, ranger and tk, there. You'll get your money's worth in knowledge and understand if you hit the great meet on the 8th, on...your server.
Lastly, welcome to this life. Rangers are here to enjoy the game, if we were uber minded, picky about balance, felt worthiness over other classes was a must, then the profession would not exist. Instead you'll find a reletively happy, helpful bunch in this neck of the woods.

I am almost a master ranger, I am almost a master Carbineer. I also have a pet Tusk Cat named Ruckus who helps me fight creatures that are bigger, more difficult than I normally would.

Welcome. Chances are you will want to avoid Squad Leader if you plan on hunting alone. It's not the best solo profession (most people would say either Rifleman or a melee profession, though).
