Well, I find that I rarely use traps anymoreso I was wondering how many Rangers still use them and find them useful? I was thinking even without the line of trapping in Ranger I still have 9 traps from Master Scout available to use. Just wondering if I am wasting skill points by simply not using them? As a TKM I think I can prolly drop states on creatures quicker than by throwing traps but still.
Perhaps this would be better suited to the Scout forum but hey, were all scouts here right?

I find traps are useful in what Fred said, and it seems status effects land quicker / more often with a trap then with special attacks. I am TKM too....not to mention there a good party trick when helping newbies....and they help newbies without you killing the critter with that one special status effect

I am a Pistoleer, therefore I am usually not concealed taking shots at my potential harvest.
I use traps maybe 60-80% of the time for run of the mill (level 25) targets. For the solo group targets, oh yeah, big time traps are used.
However.
You can take the Ranger traps and stick em in a droid, take the droid and leave it at home. I haven't used a Ranger trap in weeks, probably months. Pdarts and glowwire.
Ranger traps are useless. Wow, they may or may not affect more than one critter. I am smart enough to draw one 90% of the time. And when I don't, I use scout traps and specials to drop the extras, not Ranger traps.
Talk about a waste of skill points - Ranger traps are just that.

I feel all the traps are useful, even ones in the ranger category - but not as much as it should be. It was already stated that ranger traps may, or may not work. That is a big problem, and unfortunate one infact. I wish they would fix the traps so they work, and make dizzy affect the targets.
So in short, yes traps are handy. Traps are the most handy for ranged people, but also for melee. I'm almost a master fencer, and my blind 2 attack barely sticks on high level MOBs, but my traps stick almost all the time. Thus, I craft traps, and throw them to get the status effects quicker than I can by hand.
One suggestion though - factory craft your camps and traps. You need an equipment factory, and a private crafting machine - but if you don't have one, talk to a friend and get access to one. The traps and camps are very fast to make, and will save LOTS of time in the field. What I generally do is crate various traps and camps, then throw the traps in my toolbar, leaving one loose in the inventory. That way, during a fight, I have them right there, easily able to be used. Saves a lot of time, and effort since it's a pain to carry lots of materials in the field for crafting stuff.

Lol. I guess I am dumb enough to run in with unarmed combat and start attacking. However Flash bombs are far from useless. Perhaps for your style of play, but not mine. Easy on the generalizations

Are traps useful?
Nope.
Let's put it this way, when I was dropping down from master ranger to 0-0-4-0 ranger, trapping was the very first line to go. And on my bounty hunter character, when they dropped the master scout requirement, again, I dropped trapping the first day that was an option (and kept all the other scout skills because they are useful).

I find them useful but that's probably due to the lack of a combat profession. If some creatures decides I look good for dinner (either because I didn't notice my maskscent/conceal breaking or because of the conceal bug) then I don't have many ways to stop it from killing me (especially when wandering around the adventure planets). Traps give me a chance.

I'm a master rifleman (but ranger first), so yeah many times I lay prone, bang bang, take my harvest.
Sometimes when I'm in a rush though, or I'm unlucky enough to get spotted and take multiple aggro, I do use the area effect ranger traps. However, I'm not satisfied with the success rate for actually effecting more than one creature, even when I've got them bunched around me.
My favourite traps are Phenacine Darts and Glow Wire Traps though. Glow Wire is just very efficient, it's two traps rolled into one, and I think it really works. Phenacine darts are perhaps the most effective trap we have though, and as a defensive measure too. There are many situations where a big creature that's even too much for my Hunting Armour is on me, the phenacine is absolutely great for allowing you to get to a safe distance (and then I can take my armour off and proceed to /strafe2 or /headshot3 spam :smileyvery-happy
.
I recently did a 12 hour factory run, I made lots of crates of six different traps, and it's really showing me which ones do work the best, because the ones that don't I've still got plenty of stock left

Im still a novice ranger, so Im still using Scout traps, but I find them very usefull. I find myself grinding out Wire Mesh traps and throwing one at a critter is the first thing I do. It lowers their melee defence and lets me beat them to a pulp faster. I also like the traps that snare them in position (when I want to run away) and the one that slows them down is usefull as well.

Yep, that sounds like the Phenacine dart. Also good for mounting a surprise attack

Yes that be the one. A Phenacine dart or an Adhesive Mesh in conjuction with the burst run is a good combination.
A good question I thought of just now is; Does the Phenacine dart also slow a creatures attack speed?

I think it does. I say this from watching the combat channel during a fight, but I haven't read it for a fact anywhere.
I used to love the adhesive mesh for what it did, it seemed like a really good idea (and looks amazing too). However, comparing it against the Phenacine Dart, I've gone off it since it only lasts a few seconds, compared to the phenacine dart which effectively does the same job, but for a lot longer.
What's more, while both traps need resources we can't get ourselves (unless you have novice artisan), phenacine not only does a better job, it also uses less resources to make!
