Peace
The prevalentand reoccurring issue of "What a ranger is?" made me really think about the chosen skillset by the Devs for the "ranger" profession. In the thread where the personsuggested that ranger be able to heal poisons because rangers in LOTR can, he gets blasted for the suggestion. I can understand the reasoning for the disagreement. This isn't LOTR after all.
However the question becomes"WHAT IS A SW RANGER LIKE?" Apparently the conception of a SWG ranger had to come from the Extended Universe as there is no clear cut example from the movie (or at least I dont remember anyone being called a ranger in the movies, please correct me ifI'mwrong.) Someone posted a list, awhile ago in the Nraas days,of several different groups that were identified as "rangers." From that list the one consistent tie that these groups all had is that they werecombat-related in some way, be it para-military or law enforcement. The two that were most significant to me were the Antarian Rangers and the Imperial Sector Rangers. Overall however, one thing that also was significant was that being "masters of the environment" was less important in the overall SWG conception of "ranger." Now when I say "less important," what I'm really saying is that understanding and knowing the environment was more of a byproduct of some militaristic goal than there reason for being. Also the Antarian Rangers were moreso masters of a"planetary" environment whereas the IS rangerswere seemingly more masters of a "space" environment.
I say all this to point out that the current ranger skillset we have, seems to be almost more of a result of SOE's past with the fantasy genre than with a Star Wars genre. The Star Wars ranger seems to be at the most basic levels simply a soldier and at the most extreme cases a guerilla-styled soldier. I did seesome info in the Unoffical SW Encyclopediaabout a man who was a "ranger of a preserve," where he seemed to be a rangerin the "protector of a national park" sense.
OverallI definitely think that the Devs vision for rangers isseverely limited in its "creature-centric" focus.Personally I'm not advocating us becoming commandos, squad leaders, etc, nor do I believe we should have a "ranger-specific" weapon. However, based onSWG lore, a PVE(creature-only)- focus for rangersis totally off base. PVE(npc) and PVP definitely need to be addressed inthe ranger skillset.Yes we are masters of the environment but we are also in a time of a galactic war, a time when not being combat-ready is inconceivable.
BTW I saw something that gives support to something we all want:
Trianii
a feline race native to the planet Trian, which bordered on the Corporate Sector. When the Corporate Sector Authority decided to annex the planet, the Trianii balked. Many of them resisteed, but the planet was eventually annexed. Some of the Trianii continued to speak out against the Authority, and were captured and held at Stars' End. The most agile and cunning Trianii often become Rangers, an elite group of warriors.
Trianii Rangers
an elite army of Trianii which is a highly-skilled legion of law enforcement officials. They are excellent marksmen, and can move with incredible stealth.

nice post, I agree that we should some how get skills that are useful in pvp, maybe traps for players and getting rid of the tab feature and us showing up on radar and mini map(ctrl + m) because of course we can hide ourselves in the wilderness

Did that guy just necropost his own thread? 'cause i didn't see any replys the first time...for shame! LOL.
Yeah, that was me who did the so-called "blasting". I'll say what I said again with as little attitude as possible- this isn't LOTR and this isn't a Star Wars movie. There are lots of skills in this game that don't match up with real life/star wars lore/alternate lore. I simply was expressing frustration that ideas that COULD be good are cheapened by derivitive and ultimately innefective arguments. The idea itself wasn't bad. I just felt that attempting to justify through LOTR simply brings up the greatest SWG Ranger dilema: the problem of identity. The problem arises from the vairous pre-conceptions that come from the word Ranger. Yeah, Aragorn is cool. Army Rangers are cool. But by attempting to make SWG Rangers like them, we fracture the Ranger into people who want the "Wilderness" (Aragorn) and those who want the "Combat". I simply belive that this fracturing is a result of people seeing Ranger in terms of some other work of fiction.
True, there is no specific Star Wars Ranger. However, that again isn't entirely important in my mind. There are plenty of things in Star Wars movies that don't happen in Star Wars galaxies. If the game were like the movies, Lightsabers would kill in one hit, there wouldn't be cloning, Princess Leia could've bought a set of composite armor and gotten buffed and been invincible. Lots of things don't add up. The Antarian Rangers work well for me as a premise, since they acted as "guides". That connotates anything from explorers to experienced fighters who can lead a Jedi through a tough battle. That's what I think is important about Ranger: the bevy of choices that SHOULD be there. Rangers right now are simply the "masters of the wilderness" even though we don't live up to that role. We basically are the trackers and the gatherers. Not what I think anyone really wants from Ranger. I can just see Aragorn trying to explain to the Fellowship that he'd love to go protect the Ring, but he has to go get some of the great Nazghoul meat that's in shift. I use that referance not to justify my argument but to show that even the people who DO use methods of defining Ranger I think are wrong should agree that Rangers should be more than they are. What appeals to me is a blending of the "Wilderness" and the "Combat" fields. A character who can choose to remain peaceful (a Ranger/BE should be peaceful lol) or can, with combat training in a weapon, be able to hunt.
Part of what confuses people about me when I say I want combat and PvP for Ranger is that they assume I mean I want to be POWERFUL in those roles. I don't want to be an uber PvP person and even in combat, I don't want to see Rangers using a Ranger weapon to solo a Rancor. What I want is for a Ranger to have a weapon that,in conjuction with their usual weapon, makes them leathal. A bow that can cause massive bleeds, but not much initial damage, or a weapon that can poison and confuse a creature. The point being that a Ranger weapon should SUPPLEMENT a combat prof, or be used only in times of dire need, not used as another massive damage weapon. That's my definition of a Ranger-- a Star Wars GALAXIES Ranger...not just a SW Ranger. By blending the two sides, we can have a skill that can be used in a variety of ways from the guide to the tracker to the harvester to the big game hunter. By spreading the available skills to applications in the GCW and Ranger, we will have a diverse and unique set of skills that balance us not only in terms of other players but also give us an identity that we can each use our own way. I will likely continue to hunt and kill big game...but I want to know that if I ever get the itch to PvP, I will not be useless. But some people might find Ranger better as a complement to BE or CH. and that's fine too. I want this Proffession to be usefull to the most people possible.
In the end, the devs may not want stealth and they may not want to balance Ranger out, but I doubt that they will go against the general consensus of Rangers. In the end, I think that we are likely to get some of the more general combat ideas that we've suggested, but not all. Ithink that if we show a reason that Rangers should have a more diverse skillset by giving reasons that don't drag Aragorn into the reason why we should get it, the developers are likely to listen. In the end, they've said every prof has a role in the GCW. I think that we can show that Rangers, too, would/should have a role, and by giving them ideas, we'll help to get that accross. I agree that perhaps that person didn't deserve the stark and bare response I gave him. I've heard the phrase Aragorn or LOTR aproximately 500,000 times on this board now though and I've always felt it was out of place. I simply posted my take on the thing, and I apologize if that came off as an insult. I don't mean to be a jerk but...man...there are just times that I think peoplethink that Ranger isjust the beta test fora LOTR MMORPG.

Traps that can be used on NPCs or Players; now wouldn't that be nice. I think rangers should be more like chefs in a way too. Sure we can forage fruits and bait to "boost" our HAM for a very very short bit, but why not be able to make foods or medicines from those fruits we forage? Don't make them as good as chef stuff but make them better. But then again, rangers won't be changed for a long time (or never). Devs have focused most of their resources on JtL; they don't want anyother f*#@ up like when they released SWG before it was ready (which is partially our fault for griping that it was delayed again). Once JtL comes out, we rangers will become even more scarce as the SP spent on ranger will go somewhere else. BUT I will be one of the few who will be a space ranger (Not like Buzz lightyear [don't sue me pixar]).

THis is from the Completely Unofficial Encyclopedia of Star Wars:
Camo Scout Armor
developed and produced by Creshaldyne Industries, this speciallized armor was created to protect an individual while making them difficult to see. Woven into the fabric of the armor was circuitry that worked with tiny photoreceptive fibers built into the outer plating, absorbing ambient light and changing color to match the wearer's surroundings. the Camo/stealth/ scout armor would be nice. Ive always said that if yougain master of a class you should be able to get thats class armor. IMP/REB im not picky.

I dont think making the ranger into a combat class is a good idea, we have rifleman/carbineer whatever we can lean for that, I see a ranger as exactly what it is, an advanced scout. They have great solo survival skills in the form of traps, they have great group skills with camps.
I see a Ranger in itself as a guilds eyes and ears. Being able to get close to enemy strogholds without being seen or heard. The one thing I would like to see is the ability to mask ourselves from radar, having a sneak command that slows movement but makes us undetectable would be a godsend in an Imperial or Rebel group moving to attack an enemy camp, and make the ranger more than a resource collector.

mmm in my opinion the best thing to have now is a cure poison/disease kit, like the camuf. kit. eventually for exclusive use in the high level ranger camps! That's what we need ... aside a stealth rilfe

"I dont think making the ranger into a combat class is a good idea, we have rifleman/carbineer whatever we can lean for that, I see a ranger as exactly what it is, an advanced scout."
Im not saying to make ranger a "combat class."Im saying to add skills to our template thatnot only further promote the idea of a "Star Wars" ranger but also skills that make usmore useful to groupsin PVE andPVP (GCW).
"They have great solo survival skills in the form of traps, they have great group skills with camps."
What great "solo survival skills" are u referring to? Surely not traps. Our traps within the ranger line suck. I dont know any veteran ranger that uses them. Our best traps come to us from our scout line and even those arent great. Since Im a melee ranger I only, ONLY use wire mesh and phenacine. But i know that ranged rangers swear by those adhesive traps. Furthermore have traps that cause the dizzy effect is a further testament on how poorly designed the ranger profession is. Our traps only work on creatures and the devs have kindly informed us that dizzy has no effect on creatures.
The only functional good that comes from camps are for non-TKA meditation branch having newbs who dont have medic and a robot to heal their own wounds. Otherwise camps are purely for roleplaying purposes. OH and I did forget that the HTFB's are useful for their crafting stations.
"I see a Ranger in itself as a guilds eyes and ears. Being able to get close to enemy strogholds without being seen or heard. This is exactly why I posted the above. I think that the Camo Scout Armor would be a great way of adding stealth to the game. We could only be stealthy while wearing it and since it is armor it provides some light resists but of course nothing as comparable to comp armor.
