Thread: Ranger, To Be or Not To Be

That is the question.

I am currently TKM/MRanger. The problem is I am also Mayor of a small town which has a Krayt problem. They were helpfully absent for the 2 day period I spent scouting the area out - and showed up after I had about 12 people settled and a couple of million invested in the township. Smart lizards. Maybe I should rename the town from High Plains to "Krayt Buffet". I think recruiting would plunge somewhat.

I really enjoy Ranger, and I am doing well with selling hides and meat, like the lifestyle etc, despite the things that don't work in Ranger. However, I am manifestly unable to solo Krayts, and my budding guild is primarily filled with greenhorns who won't be able to help me much for quite some time. I would like to keep growing the town but keeping the Krayts down would be a desirable goal. I also have ADKed Knuckles of Katarn that I don't really want to lose or just hang on the wall. SO its decision time...

So, I figure either I:

* Do nothing. We just learn to live with large obnoxious neighbours who have a hobby trashing bikes. Its not like we have a big tourism industry anyways. Eventually we have enough high level people we can take them out in groups.

* Drop Ranger (sob) and switch to TKM/MDoctor/Swords0040 or some varient. This also hurts my FS progress of course by reducing the FS Senses exps I am getting from the lovely Ranger profession, but I can deal with that, it only means a lengthier grind on what is already a long grind, and I am only in it for the alt. So far I am not aware of a grind because its all been fun. Its worth noting that when I get to Paddy status, I will have to drop Ranger or go CH/Ranger (which would be fine by me, but again bye bye KofK). If I drop it I can go TKM/MDoc and make my alt a Ranger (probably CH/Ranger).

* Keep Ranger, and give up the Knucklers of Katarn and switch to some other template, say MBH/MRanger which might let me deal with the Krayts more effectively. I used to be this combo and dropped it because I didn't want to keep buying armor on a weekly basis, thus my exploration of TKM.

* Keep Ranger and switch to MCH/MRanger/Medic0440 and discover whether or not that path can deal with lizards. It doesn't seem overly powerful or advantageous over my current template in any way, other than the fact that perhaps pets can put up some useful states. It still ALR damage with no Rifling skills.

* Keep Ranger and switch to the popular Master Rifles/Master Ranger. Buhbye Knuckles but people seem to find this an effective template, I gather it involves a lot of shooting backwards while you run in circles kiting. Of course this has no healing and I can't keep it when I get to Paddy.

* Figure out if there is still someway to beat a Krayt with TKM/MRanger. I can't see it because every time I get within munching distance of the leezard, it munches and its not long before my Bliel+StimD is insufficient to keep me vertical. Running in circles using traps and an ALR doesn't seem to work either. Tried that and its Krayts 4/Me 0 so far.

* Just acknowledge the lizards are the masters (at CL84 for some of them that is probably the case) and resign myself to hiring hunting parties to deal with them when the time comes.

So, got any suggestions/help? I like Ranger but I owe a debt to those people who decided to join me and help me build my town too. TKM/Doc seems like a better option for slaughtering really big lizards than my current configuration, love of the Ranger profession notwithstanding.

ps. yes I agonize over templates a lot, in fact most of my posts seem to deal with template decisions. I think if I could just muster an extra 60 SPs from somewhere my worries would be resolved.

Remember, they could easily go away with the next server reset . I you truly want to keep Ranger, I'd stick it out for now.

You might try requesting help on your Galaxies boards. I know atelast on bloodfin that alot of people like to go to the graveyard, which can cause some problems. Advertise that you have alot of krayts and people may come out. On your template problems, what are the stats on your alr? Is it sliced?A good alr with a full speed slice and a damage powerup can be pretty effective.

I am on Tarquinnas for the record, forgot to mention that.

Yes, they will go away eventually. They will also more than likely return eventually, so its a long term problem. As I said I can just issue warnings and hope that server resets, Krayt hunters and other factors deal with them.

Maybe I can even organize Krayt Hunting expeditions I dunno. I just want to make thing safer for my citizens so the town continues to grow.

I will hold off for the moment, if only for the fact that I am having fun and making a bundle off resource harvesting at the moment...

Any other suggestions though?

Personally I would keep it if you are enjoying it.

If the lizards are a problem post their locations when you see them on your server forum... that will attract hunters and you wont have to pay a dime... in fact exploit (not the naughty kind) the fact that you do have a "regular" wild spawn the dragons... I bet some people would honestly want to live there just to hunt them... Get a doc in town and a cantina and u could make your money off the dragon hunting!

Its in the North/North East part of Tatooine, up near the top wall of the map, on a rolling sandy part of the landscape. Sorry I don't have a waypoint for it out of game. They are not a permanent spawn, and I thought that I was well away from the Graveyard as I have no desire to threaten that spawn at all. They do seem to come and go and they are mostly a hazard for my townsfolk. None have come closer than 100m from town so far, and they had despawned by the time I got there when that was reported to me.

Its an infrequent hazard and not right on top of us so far. It is true that I may be able to attract some folks due to the Krayts, I hadn't thought of that.

I am having fun with Ranger, tried my hand at fishing and crustacean/mollusk hunting earlier today just to see whats what. Made 2.4m on some hides this morning that I hunted last night, its generally going quite well.

Whereabouts is your town? I've noticed a few spawns of krayts well away from the graveyard that are pretty much permanent and a couple that 'come and go' once in a blue. Bad news is that when they are there they are pretty heavy spawners and hang around for a while.

I've seen one town near the 'yard with over two dozen mean lizards sunbathing in/on/thru houses... Even found them in the crated out past Entha. Now that was scary...

Popped into the graveyard today on a new-ish toon to get his badge, found two Ancients whose AI had frozen. Badge point was UNDER them but I was able to just stroll in and get it, then, for a laugh wandered back out to range and started plinking. Wasn't doing ANY damage, but it was a laugh.

Intil an adolescent spawned under them and its AI was working fine let me tell you.
