I'm curious... I know it's not specifically a Ranger subject but hey, a lot of us are obviously spendinga lot of time on TC5 and while we are right to talk here about the CU as it applies to Ranger and Ranger skills, I'm curious also to know what Rangers think of the actual Combat in the Combat Upgrade. Novel concept I know.
I know we'll all have different approaches to combat but personally I'm liking what I see on so far...
I'm a Rifleperson and fairly low level (2xx2 in marksman) but it seems like an improvement to me thus far... admittedly onlykilling low level vermin with a peashooter CDEF rifle.
I appreciate there are armor concerns and HAM concernsand concerns about big game and whether we will be able to hunt and make a living, but just look at the combat for combat's sake and say what you think.
/apply new battle armor helmet
/batten down hatches
/wait for the flames

So far, my big big problem with it is the absence of a combat que. You just can't keep track of what your character is doing.
I know they say they've made this change to make combat more "engaging and interactive", but we already had the best of both worlds IMHO because the "old" combat que could the easily reset by pressing ctrl-backspace, thus allowing you to change tactics mid-fight.
I know the 'new' system ques just your 'next' move, but as it is now, I can't tell when it is accepting input for the 'next' move, thus I don't know, I can't tell, what I'm going to do next. Even having a visible combat que where you can only add (and thus see) the next move would be an improvement on what's in TC just now.

The new combat i love, but the level system (more specifically group level calculations) needs a tonne of work.
Lots and lots of bugs but combat is fun, engaging and a challange now. It takes a bit to get used to but i honestly cant imagine going back to a live server now until this gets pushed.

Dave,
Next move has a grey (I think)banner around the box and the one after that a yellow banner. You can also set your auto combat move by holding down ctrl and pressing the button (I think thats the control for that).

How do you cancel your next move though?
Could do that in the old system by resetting the combat que.

You just select another one and it moves the yellow marker over unless that skill has already been triggered.

I wonder - now that there is a melee attack fo every ranged weapon type in marksman, will there be a "bayonet" powerup for rifles ?
that might be fun :-)
that might be fun :-)

Bah... Come on Dave, you know there were no wookiees in Street Fighter, They were in Double Dragon.
And CTRL-backspace to clear the combat queue? doh, I'm such a noob, I never knew that

Ryuken! Street Fighterfor teh win Dave!
Seriously, I've only had a brief go with the new system. Not much fun at novice marksman/scout level for me. I got bored very, very fast. I did not know about the auto-attack thing either so I just felt like I was button bashing too. Perhaps I may try again once Elite profs are up but I really cba at the moment. I also think the new icons are really out of place and make things hard to see.
In the new system can rifle specials still be performed while moving? I didn't even get far enough to test this. I ask 'cos currently I use my mouse to select toolbar buttons and swap mouse modes in the heat of battle by clicking my mouse wheel, so I can move about. Is this still possible?

Well they did the same thing as in JTL beta. They didn't advertise the basics very well hence making players frustrated.
I'm not hot on the new interfaceas imo it breaksseveral human-computer interaction (HCI)basic design rules. For example most of us are hardly computer illiterate but many are having problems with understanding what functionality is available (which isn't a great sign).

Well we have the basics in the documents but thats not what this is about. We are meant to be testing what its like for totally new players starting in a new game. Thats what this is about during this stage as i lots of people are going to be coming back based on the CU.
At present the amount of info is good because its a learn as you go process which i havnt fealt since those early days on rori hehe.
