#1: We need a weapon that we can craft

#2: We need a weapon that we can experiment with,to get it more powerfull

#3: We need a weapon that has a effect similar to the traps we use

#4: We need a weapon that SUX in PvP (But not necessary..)

Ive been thinking of maybe like a advanced archbow, that only rangers can craft/experiment/use. We could experiment with all sorts of poision that does similar effects to the creatures that the traps do,but it will also damage them. Maybe the bow would have a decay or something. What do you think? Post post post!

(Note: Sorry for the bad english,Swedish player)

You dont like what I post?
There is nothing I can care less about than that.

I don't think we really need any weapons. I mean there are plenty of combat professions already, and even more weapons. What we need is more( a lot more) and much better traps. They could give us almost everything we would need to be "Ultimate Creature Hunters" just by adding some new traps. I was thinking about the Area of Effect traps and then I thought of how hard it is to land a trap on the really big critters like Krayt Dragons. I wonder if they could make it so the AoE traps affected different numbers of creatures the tougher they were. So if you throw an AoE on a pack of dwarf nuna's it would hit every single one, but if you threw that same trap in the general area of a couple of krayt dragons(within the radius of the trap) it would only effect the one you target. And it kind of makes sense if you think about it, if you set off a fire cracker near a little insect it would seem like Armaggedon to that little thing, but if you set off a fire cracker near something as big as a krayt it would just look at you funny, and if so inclined it might make you a light snack. Then they could top it off with some better camp options, better harvesting, etc.

I agree with you in principle that we Rangers need a profession specific weapon,

however, we lack the basic skills to put together a working CDEF... and a Ranger weapon should be much more complex and deadly than that. That is the WS skill, and they should remain the premier manufacturers of weapons.

I dont want to take away any interdependence from other classes...

Do a quick search on the Ranger forums and you will find several threads about a Ranger specific weapon that are quite good.

and there is an ongoing debate on a High Tech Compound Bow, Trap Launcher, Elephant Gun type weap.

hope this helps

A Ranger with no weapons? Crazy I tell you.

Yea we should have a Ranger only weapon. The crossbow sounds cool. I was thinking more the lines of a rifle with a better scope/range. Melee Rangers would need something also. How about a survival knife or staff?

if you get bored, you can check out a decent thread with a fair amount of discussion of ranger weapons, here...

to sum it up, though... there were primarily 3 ideas: trap launcher, heavy weapon type, bow/crossbow type....

trap launcher: would be great if accompanied with a trap revamp... it would increase range, speed, and effectiveness of traps and allow us to move while trapping... some folks argued that the trapping droid already accomplished enough to make this idea obsolete...

heavy weapon: some folks suggested rangers should have some weapon that worked like the commando and bounty hunter heavy weapons... enoshima (i think), proposed that the beam rifle would be the easiest, as it already exists yet no profession is certified for it... this seemed to catch on big with the guys that like the military style ranger

bow/crossbow: probably the most clear cut case of "love it, or hate it"... bows/crossbows are very "outdoorsman," but it seems many people don't see them as something that can fit into star wars... so some folks brought up the bowcaster - high tech crossbow... several of us wookiees jumped on this, saying "but... but... it's ours"... after thinking about this some more, i actually wouldn't mind if the bowcaster became the ranger weapon, and here's why... i really, really want the bowcaster to be useful for something.. i have one of the best ones ever created on my server, and i pretty much only use it for looks (and kreetles)... it makes sense that a wookiee weapon would be a ranger weapon, and that any species could use a bowcaster with the right training... my only condition in this wookiee/bowcaster compromise is that the schematic remain with all wookiees, so that only a wookiee weaponsmith could make the best...

no matter what ranger weapons you prefer, i think there are a few elements that must apply:

silent/silenced - i feel it should be the only weapon fireable from a ranger's "stealthed" state

mid-range - to support both the melee and ranged combat preferring rangers

weaponsmith craftable - it is a weapon, afterall

ranger craftable - i feel that the ammunition (should it have any) should be crafted by the ranger

mm, and just to toss out another idea... way back when i was asking if there were any other suggestions from the paramilitary ranger guys... not much sprung up... so...

squad leaders... they've been pressing for something like an air strike for a while, and who knows what their revamp has in store for them... i think it would make perfect sense for any air strike to require laser guidance for an accurate hit... to me, hiding near the drop zone with a laser emitter /targetting a turret and transmitting the signal to the bomber is a job for a ranger... basically, the weapon would come from the squad leader, but to make it useful you'd need a ranger to sneak in there and paint the target... (i'd really like to hear nemo0 on this, as our resident master SL)

umm... sadly that's all i could come up with... but i really want to hear more paramilitary suggestions... keep in mind it would have to fit with rangers more than any other profession, otherwise it might as well go to the other profession...

I have doubts about actually getting something like an airstrike (skills like that are a bit hard to code and implement)but, if we do, I think the following makes the most sense: Anyone can paint the target for an airstrike (maybe with a few skill bonuses in specific professions). But also allow it to be used when stealthed (assuming Rangersget stealth with the combat balance...). And make it so that you can't paint a target (accurately) while being attacked. So the best way to get the airstrike in PvP is to send in a stealthed Ranger. This makes it so that the skill doesn't depend too heavily on the makeup of your group but it is a lot harder to use without a Ranger.

If anyone gets an air strike its Squad leader, and it should be used like our camo kits. You can only use it on certain planets depending on your cert. Also only target static objects, Lairs ect (mobile targets would be dificult.) so to hit s creature you need to target a lair near it. It swould be blast damage with a radius of 20 m.

Definitely not a ranger skill, if they decided to implement it.

No one was proposing that it should be a Ranger skill. The suggestion was to have Rangers provide the targetting info. Often when calling in an airstrike, you have someone with a laser targetting device "paint" the target so that a smart bomb can adjust its flight path to hit the target. So the SL would call in the airstrike but you might have a Ranger provide targetting info. It would be a bit complicated that way, though. But I'd love to see a Y-Wing/Tie Bomber/B-Wing/etc fly in and decimate a target. That would be so cool (although it might be best to make it a faction perk requiring you to spend FP to buy the targetting device). *drool*

I still don't really like the idea of a Ranger weapon, andI've been around for a long time (minus a few months absence in the middle) so I have heard most of the ideas out there. The problem I see with weapons for Ranger profession is that it just turns us into another (but weaker) combat class. Since we have so many other skills, if they ever gave us a weapon and specials, they would either make it or our other skills weaker (or just take out some of our other skills all together) to keep some kind of balance within the class. An elite combat profession uses 18 boxes counting novice and master to improve someones fighting skills, a Ranger weapon would at most use 6 boxes, unless of course you want to dump1 or 2of the other trees. After 18 boxes, most combat professions probably wont even be able to solo a Rancor(like it should be) after the combat rebalance (except Jedi), so how on earth would you make a Ranger weapon effective with less than half that number of boxes. And don't say "Well I can just use the Ranger weapon and weapons of <insert elite combat profession here> and that would make it effective enough" because what is the point of having a weapon for a profession if it is unable to stand alone.

Also, most of the weapon ideas I have seen proposed (like using the beam rifle or a bow/xbow deal)are making the assumption that all rangers are ranged attackers, and not all of us are(including me). So if you put a ranged weapon into the Ranger profession those of us who are melee probably wont want to switch and then we will be wasting skill points if we want to maintain master ranger (yeah I realize we could just use both but again it will probably have to be an inferior weapon so whats the point).

So the only weapon I could see almost working is the trap launcher, but we can already throw traps at about 40 meters or so (I think) and that seems plenty far enough. And like others have said the new trapping droids might make that idea obsolete anyways. The most we need (sorry for repeating this) in my humble opinion is new, moreeffective, and much more powerful traps. If they gave us good traps and we combined it with a combat profession we could easily meet the "ultimate creature hunter" vision once they revamped some of the other trees (camping anyone) to make them more useful.

P.S. I apolgize if this post is hard to understand/follow, its early and I am still tired
