I have been a Master Ranger for quite a while now. My question is what is the point? What do you all do with Master Ranger that I am missing? I am thinking of dropping it but I don't want to do that yet, so I thought that I would ask around. This seemed like the best place to do that.

We wait for more dev love, and hope that our faith in holding on will be rewarded. Every piece of our prof they give to others is more leverage we have to get the devs to make us relavent, and possible awesome. I like awesome. Awesome is good.

Sadly it has become apperent that we are at the bottom of the que, even after the SE. I would not blame anyone for loosing faith.

As for me, I still cannot give up my HTFB or Dath camo kits. Survival Exp was just too d&mn hard to get to buy it back.

I can agree with you there, the time and experience it takes to get to master ranger is very difficult and more work than almost any other proffession from what i can tell. I too do wait for the day of the Ranger proffession to become awsome, it will be that day that i get to say "hey look at me, im a master ranger, im awsome " but as of right now, i use my Master Ranger title as a sign of respect, and that is what i get for having it, because people know that one day the Ranger class will be one to be respected highly amongst all players. i cant wait for that day to come

Ranger is a unique profession and a unique bread of players "stick" with ranger. Not to sound bad, or shove you off, but if you are asking the above question, you are not likely the type that will stick with it long anyway. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for new people joining the ranger ranks, its just we tend to be...well...odd, and gluttons for punishment, etc.

The profession is "supposed" to be a support profession, oriented to outdoors traveling, and hunting of animals. What are good for now? Well right down to it, the most useful, profitable thing about a master ranger is the harvesting bonus. And even that is debatable, if you have master scout with great combat skills that can kill faster then master ranger. That combination can sometimes harvest more, in same time as a master ranger. Now a group of master rangers, or even just varied levels of rangers, in organized hunts, can clean house fast. I know.

So basically, we have some unique, and potentially cool, fun, useful skills, but most master rangers don't use them most of the time if at all. I rarely track, and when I do its for players most of the time. I only use camo kits on advanced planets, for scout level ppl.

So try to find a niche that makes you happy with the way it is now. Or hang out until the combat balance, and our next turn at getting some loving.

Two priceless moments -

1. Leading a pack of Imps chasing me into a larger pack of really not too amused Rancors. I had maskscent on, they didn't. I won. I even DB'd a few. Teach them to mess with me when I am tef'd.

2. Amazing a hunting party by "tagging" rancors, grauls, kimos, other not nice animals... again, maskscent can be fun.

Oh yeah, I also harvest like a fiend.

Rofl, that is priceless, who needs CH when you can use a whole nest of rancors

For me, it's

  • being part of a group of unique individuals that treat each other with respect (both in-game and here)

  • the in-game respect you get with your Master Ranger tag due to all steady Master Rangers in-game being nice guys (though this does put a burden on me to keep our reputation up)

  • The outcries of: Ok, who put down that village here!

  • The potential of the Ranger Profession when SOE gets round to fixing it.

  • The independance of the other profs.

  • My disinterest in PvP

  • The ability to make a load of money using droid and veghash to save up for my ship in JTL

  • A couple of other reasons I'll think up right after clicking submit (whoever thought up the idea of giving the edit button as reward <sigh>

It also helps that the only other profs I'm interested inare Architect and Pilot,Architect I'll be able to do after P10 on my second slot (I hope) and Pilot will go nicely with my (force sensitive)Ranger/Rifleman.

Deep down, there is only one answer to this.

My character, IS a ranger. That's what she is.

If the skills were worse, if the profession was more broken, then Camby would still be a Master Ranger, Being one isn't about the benefits to the player per se, it's about a playstyle.

I've had my guildmembers actually say, "Bloody hell, you ARE a ranger!" because it's the way I play the game.

Try getting off at a starport and just setting off on foot, we're hunters not podracers. Pick up a rifle, pack some brandy and Camby's good to go. Sometimes she'll explore on foot for 15 or 20 kilometres, barely seeing a thing for kilometres on end. Hostile mobs will appear all around her, and she'll just keep up her maskscent and plough on through.

She only kills what she needs; not indiscriminately spraying around weapon fire, occassionally stopping to look for tracks to some new creature lurking over a ridge. Walking past lairs of Rancors in search of the Ancient Bull, exploring murky caves without once pulling a trigger.

Stopping in a forest glade to raise a camp and take a moment to reflect on the sun's rays starting to push through the canopy, making some traps to slow down any unwanted attackers and then packing up to move on into the unknown.

Receiving countless emails from Doctors looking to hire her services to hunt down the latest quality resources, and picking and choosing the ones that will start her off on a new adventure.

So I could drop Master Ranger and have another weapon skill - how many ways of killing things do I need?

So I could drop Master Ranger and go for Master Doctor - but she isn;t a doctor and there's plenty about to offer the services should she need them.

Being a Ranger is a profession that allows you to tap depths of immersiveness in this game that no other profession can reach.

Being a Ranger makes you part of a small and like-minded group of players who like it, partly because we are rare. Long may that continue.

Being a Ranger is the ultimate profession for the player who wants to get out there and explore, be part of the SWG universe, not try and "win" it.

Being a Ranger is a playstyle, those that follow it do so because they know, that's what their character is.

oh...

*whispers very, very quietly*

And being a Ranger is the supreme profession for those interested in monkeys.... but keep that to yourself, okay?

*winks*

For me it is:

Having the title Master Ranger above my head.

Being able to camo the other people in my group.

Whipping out the occasional HTFBK and lapping up the OOHS and the AAHS.

Being able to out harvest the other members of my group, and them knowing that, cause of the helpfull messages that scroll by on the screen.

Being able to hunt on Dath or Endor or Lok, just me and my pet, knowing that I can deal with just about anything that might happen even though my combat skills suck. The only exception thus far is other players that kindly drag the mobs that are chasing them onto me, that gets really tricky.

The sense of pride and pleasure I get when I complete a customer order for resources and get a nice big pile of credits for doing something that I would do anyway, even if I didn't get paid for it.

Being so weak, I have to beSMART when I hunt stuff. For example using your pet to collect up all the mobs around a lair, then drag them to a place where I am less likely to get agroed by other nasties so I can bam away with my pistol in relative safety. I got really good at doing this on Endor, those damn spiders are everywhere.

Don't get me wrong I love being a Ranger. It has been the best part of the game for me thus far. I need some info. on how you all go about getting orders from doc's and others for money..that would be fine by me I enjoy the fact that I alone can travel, no need of a group. I love the fact that I can take explorer missions and finish them on my own. I too hold out hope that we will be looked upon kindly by SWG one day. I believe my main point in the beginning was to find out what like minded people were using their skills for in-game. Thanks for the input

Well, ya, I should have mentioned that

Yep. I'm a mounted hunter. You miss things in a bike. I annoyed many a hunting group when I pull out ol' Achilles instead of my bike. "D&mn, we're using mounts? This will take all day".

I still hold the record for most Corellian Wooley in a day. Can't get that by drag racing to missions and back.

It's the novelty of the title, that's all.

Perhaps just the method of travel... in most cases, the die-hard Ranger would walk through the wilderness to hunt or do what they need to do, while the "Flavor of the Month" Ranger would probably just use a speeder to get between different high-level creature groups that provide the most credits.
