Thread: Swordsman/Ranger
Swordsman is a really decent PvE-profession for those that use buffs and armor, if you are one of those on this board that despise armor and (doc-)buffs (that one is somewhat unlikely when looking at your main

As for the true ranger concept well all I can say is which one? The D&D type ranger or an Antarian Ranger, if my memory serves me correctly most ARs had military exp fought in company sized units and were a para-military type, so wearing armor etc would not be a stretch for them imho.
Add to this the here quite regularly named archetype of a fantasy-style swordsman/ranger, Aragorn. Just because some have 'fixed' concepts based on one or two ranger-descriptions those descriptions can not be seen as THE 'true ranger'-concept as there are countless other description where 'wearing armor' fits in easily
There is just no single 'true ranger' concept.

I whole heartedly dissagree. Everyone has a single opinion about the "true Ranger"![]()

. I was posting my view, but did not mean to limit the views of anyone else. If it came out that way then /begsforgiveness. My view of a ranger is being able to live off of the land (hehe i'm an eagle scout give mea break). HoweverI do wear a +intimidate suit most of the time so I do pay my BE and Tailor friends a visit.

P.S. How I long for the edit button...
I've been a Ranger/Swordsman since I started the game and I've never hunted without my armor. You just don't need to use composite. Everybody seems to forget that 99% of creatures hit with kinetic damage when you are tanking them, so the only stat you need to worry about is Kinetic Resistence.
Find yourself a nice set of adv ubese, with a kinetic resist of 70% or higher and a max your secondary stats, you should have no problem putting it on.
Throw a stink bomb first and intimidate will have a better chance of sticking. Then throw a flash bomb and of course use Center of Being. Against a blind and intimidated opponent, with a 70% K resist and center of being the odds are considerably in your favor. You shouldn't even need to use specials, just sit back and whack away with your powerhammer.
This is how I tank all the mid to high (cl 35-60) level creatures. I rarely ever use buffs or food..etc and I don't even have novice medic.
Just play your cards well and its easy.
P.S. Aragorn wore armor throughout all of the 3 of the films; Leather, chain and even heavy plating in Return of the King.

Not wearing armor would be the silliest thing a Ranger/Swordsman could do in PvE.

OMG! Finally the thread I've been looking for!
The last 3 days I've been scouring the boards (swordsman/ranger/scout) and now think I've been mislead a little. Swordsmen(and women) say you need some TKA or some Fencing or some Rifleman to solo and do well out there PvE. The flip side of it is the rhetoric that says "forget it, as a ranger you will only be a support toon.....if you plan on hunting solo you NEED Creature Handler.....you'll never be good enough at elite combat skills to solo". I also have no intention of PvP. I just want to go hunting with my R/L friends, a commando and a BH, and take down Rancors and Krayts like nobody's business. I'm looking forward to providing support with traps, camps, and aggro techniques. Thanks!
The camps are pretty to look at, but the Novice Ranger camp will do the exact same thing.
Wayfaring only allows you to crawl faster. And the camo kits dont really add anything to tactics

Right, I'd recomend the trapping line instead. Flash Bombs are awesome when you're getting swarmed and you need to the trapping bonus to hit higher end mobs.
Wayfaring may someday become useful again, if they fix camo and stealth but right now its pretty useless.
If you decide to Master however you'll be fine with just novice medic, or maybe even without any medic at all.
My template is...
Master Ranger
Master Swordsman
Master Scout
Brawler 1-4-4-1
Fencing 3 gives me a dizzy attack that I use in combination with swordsman posture changes like a dizzy + kd move. I use a macro to swtich weapons and lay on the dizzy + posture change in one move and have found it very useful against npcs and sometimes in Pvp.
It was really scary when I first dropped medic but once I adapted my fighting style I've never looked back. Sure popping a stim B is nice when your in trouble but that dizzy + posture change combo has saved my life much more than novice medic could have.
P.S. Don't listen the uber l33t morons on the Swordsman boards. I stopped going by that board a long time ago and I've been much less angry ever since
