That's exactly the point of it. Look through the forum boards at how people say Master Ranger isn't a profession it's a lifestyle. If they aren't willing to find out a little about the profession, then they can just go on ahead and go to a NPC ranger trainer. It won't bother me one bit. If they took the time to seek out a Master Ranger for training, I'd feel bad to give them a diploma without knowing some basic fundamentals of being a ranger. I'm going through items right now to see what would look good to hand someone for a diploma. I'm thinking probably a deed renamed or something of the sort to give them.
A sixpack (camo kit) might work if you renamed it to 'Master Ranger Diploma'. Although it wouldn't be suitable for all ages.
As for questions, you could probably ask a bit about the wildlife of a planet (possibly letting them choose the planet the questions will be about) or about some of the Ranger skills. A few questions I might consider reasonable:
- Name a creature on planet X that drops resource Y.
- What planet is creature X from?
- What resource does creature X drop?
- What is the difference between maskscent and camouflage?
- Name a special attack that creature X uses (this one might be a bit harsh depending on the creature asked).
- Name a creature with special attack X (again, potentially a bit harsh).
- What is one of the epic/rare creature/NPCwild spawns of planet X?
- What sort of terrain will you find in the [N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW] region of planet X?
- Where can you find a [desert, forest, lake, etc] on planet X?
- Describe a POI on planet X that does not appear on the POI tab (or just any POI).
- What is the range of /areatrack?
- What sort of crafting stations are there in a HTFB (or possibly just a field base kit as many people will have never seen a HTFB before their training).
- Name 3 different types of fish.
- Name 3 different varieties of creature X.
There are plenty of other questions that could be asked but I can't be bothered to list everything I can think of (and I can't list the stuff I haven't thought of). Personally, I will train anyone. But I can see how this sort of system would be nice (I just don't want to cause someone trouble in a game just because they don't play as I do). Maybe it is worth asking them if they wish to earn a Ranger diploma and, if yes, send them on a quest to find the answers to a selection of questions like those above. Then you can just train the hologrinders and let them be on their way while also giving some people a nice [epic] quest. And you probably want to make a crate of diplomas for easy access (although make sure to tell them not to use /conceal with it in their inventory
).

The thing that initially spurred my interest in this is that I've ran into Master Rifleman that didn't know what shot to use to dizzy something. It's kinda sad in a way.
Hopefully most of that will be going away on Tuesday and the rest should be gone after the next publish. I just hope that the Combat Balance makes it useful to actually use most of those skills for the average player (right now, the average player only bothers to mash the button for their highest damage shot).
