Thread: Anyone think it's bogus how many SP it takes for Nov. Ranger?

So like everyone else, I'm playing around with my respec, trying to find a balance that I like. And that's when I *finally* noticed that Rangers get shafted on skill points.

It seems the majority of expert skills only require 1 or two branches to get to novice. In mathermatical terms it takes an average of 34 skill points to get from a novice base skill to a novice expert skill. (I'm not counting the 15 skill points it takes for the base skill). Novice Ranger takes 68 skill points! This is because it requires all 4 branches of Scout plus Master Scout.

I'm sure this has been covered before, it was just interesting playing with the respec and noticing that I could taketwo (or more) other novice expert skillscombined for less than what it would cost me to get Novice Ranger.

I guess my question (if I even have one) is....isRanger worth it?

Yup, its been noticed

There seem to be two main camps:

a) Cut back on the SP investment
b) Make the SP investment WORTH something

As for 'is it worth it', well, depends. What do you want from it?

Oh, and another thing to watch, the respec uses respec points not skill points and Ranger boxes cost more per box than the other profs at the same level.

When I was playing around with the respec on my Master Ranger character my fiance suggested I drop Master and a couple of the scouting boxes to boost up my fighting boxes as I could always regrind up to Master Ranger pretty quickly .. then I noticed you need over 1mill xp to train up Master Ranger and not just a skill point usage so I said nooo waaay.

Also, since I have hunted at Master Ranger and grabbed all that wonderful resources that my Chef, Architect and Bio Engineer chars need there is no way I would drop Ranger for anything else. The +60 bonus for Harvesting is definitely excellent for those that utilise the harvesting element and to me I feel is worth keeping the skill for.

But yes, I definitely think its unfair that Ranger is the only skill now that requires more than 2 columns to utilise the Elite skill related to it. Of course artisans were not affected techinically by the upgrade and thus only need 1 column to get to their Elite Skill although when you think of it they almost always have at least the Survey column as well. Maybe in a later upgrade they will change artisan to reflect that as a must have requirement .. but cannot think of how they could do this with Ranger unless they only require you to have the Terrain and Harvesting columns to level up to Ranger .. *shrugs*

Man thats a thought why dont they throw Rangers the ability to survey for non organic resources too, what all these SP and we cant use a handheld computer?? Then we could be double-duty resource seekers.....anyone thought this before (im sure) heheh

I could really help my BE/Artisian bro out by finding his resources for him while I hunt as he can no longer leave the house without a chuba triple incapping him hhehehehe lol YAY CU!!!

I'd almost be okay with that; the only reason I won't be mastering rifleman is because I refuse to give up my Survey IV skill. However, I'm not really sure that this would fit the ranger profession. I realize there's a number of proposals out there (some of which I haven't really read), but it seems to me that giving rangers the survey ability might be treading on the toes of the artisan. There's been noise here about our trap specials being farmed out to the combat professions-not sure if we really want to have that kind of noise directed to us (while some might call it justice, it's not like they gave artisans our abilities).

That said-I'm in the camp of "make our sp's MEAN something". Give us a GOOD reason to camp (and for others to be in the camps with us), effective traps (two traps on the whole ranger line? C'mon...), do something about the creature knowledge ability, and give something to Masters besides a Dath camo kit, and I think it would go a long way to justifying the costs of being a ranger.

And THAT should only be to tide us over until the revamp, where others have written better proposals than anything I could create.

Well to answer your question Almagill, I'm really only looking to it for the camo primarily and the tracking secondarily. I really don't care about the harvesting and trapping to be honest. The one nice thing is that with Ranger you've done all the set-up work you need for novice Creature Handler.

So if I was going to get specific I would ask whether the camo and tracking abilities are worth the massive SP.

I apologize for stirring the pot on an old debate...the respec just made me start thinking about the whole situation. Personally, I'd prefer they just drop two of the branches required for Ranger and balance it out, but we'll see what happens.

Sometimes it's worth stirring the old debates up once in a while. Just to see how folks views change, if at all.

Post CU about all I'm interested in from Ranger is the trapping line, just to get a higher %chance of a stick for one of my old scout traps and, yup, tracking, although as we don't get CL on the track info I'm less fussed about that for now so I'll refill one of my huntin' lines and get a higher yield. Probably go back up the cammo lines first tho as it gives me something to sell, lol.

Is it 'worth' it? Well, even I'm having trouble with that one for now. To be honest, I'm sticking with ranger cos I like being a ranger. I don't contract hunt, I rarely track for others, I don't PvP, but I can churn Scout XP and Rifles XP out and sell it for FS at the village.

Guess 'worth it' depends on whatever else you'd be doing with the SP. /shrugz

Well you kinda touched upon one of my main worries...CL. I'd probably use half the SP at least to build up my CL somewhere (Commando, BH, etc.),so I could be half crafter/half combat. I'm not a PvP person at all and enjoyCreature Handler, but would like to be able to pick a crafting profession without getting mya** kicked all time because my CL is under 20.I'm more of a solo player than group player, so with the CU my CL is more important now than it used to be. Interesting point about the FS...I hadn't thought about that....

Hehe yep, my Ranger is now my off planet surveyor and harvester owner .. my crafters can't travel far from their houses and my bio engineer doesn't have any artisan at all .. still ironing out her skills so may add it later if theres enough points after shes sorted everything else out... hehe noticed the third person reference to my own character .. hehe

Here's an alternative suggestion.

Think about what's been discussed for our fabled revamp. Do we go the direction of general hunter and expert stealth and recon type of ranger, or do we become very creature centric and become the uber hunters we've all wished we were?

How about we get both by means of splitting ranger into two professions (as outlined above), each being at least partially based in scout?

Two trees of Scout for one type of Ranger, two trees of Scout for another. Now THAT makes sense.
