Thread: My vision of a Ranger

I must confess I am new to the Ranger profession. So this comes from my perception of what a Ranger is supposed to be, not what it has been, is, or will be in SWG.

Rangers can be men and women of a kind, helping nature, serving as guides and teachers to others. Navigating the harsh terrain, learning what plants and animals can be hunted and eaten, and useful tips for survival are all within the scope of this side of the Ranger. Within SWG, our max harvest modifiers work well with that, as does our camp making ability. But as a guide, a Ranger makes his entire group more efficient. Not to tread on the defined role of a Squad Leader, but I envision group modifiers for terrain negotiation, harvesting, healing while out in the wild when grouped with a Ranger. These group modifiers would be latent, automatic when a Ranger is part of the 8 person group. I imagine that it would be stackable as well, since logically the more experts you have assisting the non experts in a group, the more efficient the overall group would become.

For example, should you have a single ranger in your group, the entire group would recieve a bonus of +10 terrain negotiation, +10 to creature harvest, and +10 to healing effectiveness and speed. If you have 3 Rangers in a group, your group benefits would simply be 3 times that.

This would at one time re-emphasize our focus on grouping and maintaining a diversified mix of templates. A hunting parting could include a Squad Leader in command, 2 Rangers to track what the party is looking for and to add the above benefits, a Doctor, 2 Tanks, and 2 Ranged Experts. This group would make an amazing hunting party and truly take advantage of everything SWG is currently offering.

Contrarily, some Rangers tread a decidely darker, more solitary path. Referencing another source of Fantasy / Science Fiction, Aragorn of the Lord of the Rings was a Ranger, when he was known as Strider. Silent, stealthy, deadly, these men embodied all the above virtues of terrain negotiation, medical proficiency in the wild, and a knowledge of hunting, but also of navigating the dangers of the unknown wilderness. The Rangers are expert at combat as well, exemplifying the survivalist instinct in all of us. The Rangers are trained through years of experience in hunting, and being hunted, by the most dangerous creatures, and finding the most effective ways to kill them while keeping themselved safe. This would translate to a large modifier in creature hit damage, as well as a creature damage mitigation factor. Not applied to NPCs, a Rangers damage modifiers would effectively mean they would hit creatures harder, as they know precisely where and how to attack them, and would in turn recieve less damage from them, as they know how to avoid the fangs, claws, and jaws of even the most vicious creatures.

This latent ability would be limited to the individual player and not extended to the group as the aforementioned benefits would be.

This vision for a multi-faceted Ranger allows greater diversity in the template selection we can choose. We could choose to follow the route of a Ranger healing expert, or a Ranger hunting expert, or a Ranger tanking expert. But the majesty and mystery of the Ranger would be honored as it has been throughout literature, and should be in SWG as well.

A: Most people are probably out exploring Kashyyyk by now

B: You need to give it more time

C: For those of us on dial up who are forced to read this forum for 19 hours, well, this topic has been discussed countless times. As you said you are new, but if you were perhaps lurking around the forums you would see the topic comes up about once a month. Thusno feedback.

I think your vision meshes pretty well with the community vision as a whole. I see a lot in there that has been suggested since the start of the game. I think you picked up on a lot of logical extensions of the profession.

A few comments:

1. I do think the terrain negotiation for the group would be stepping into the realm of the SL a little too much - since they have that exact skill.

2. You already get a 30% bonus to harvesting if you have a Ranger in your group and a 40% bonus if you have a master Ranger in your group.

3. Camps have a healing modifer on them (I may be mistaken) that allows you to heal better. Camps will also heal your wounds for you if you sit in one long enough. Very useful now that wound healing is a Doc-only skill.

I wasn't sure if you were aware of #2 and #3.

I'm sorry if I was unclear. I know about the existing side of it. My contribution was the combat effect of Ranger, which I had not yet seen mentioned, in my limited meanderings.

Hehe. Actually my account is acting very weird and takes out all formatting from posts, so your post looks like one huge run-together paragraph to me. Its very likely I just became confused about your meaning somewhere in there!

Nice idea. I have to agree with the increased creature damage. As a Master Ranger, CH 3 3 3 4, Marksman 4 0 4 3 I am combat level 76. However since the CU I cannot solo any missions at my level now. Even with pets I get my backside handed to me everytime.

As Ranger I believe (Correct me if I'm wrong) adds to the combat level of your character we should be given the combat skills to go with this. If not then reduce the combat level forRangers.

We don't want our Combat Level decreased... We want to be effective at our Combat Level.

We want justification for spending 140 Skill Points on our profession. No, I don't believe we should go the Image Designer route and I think Master Scout is necessary for Ranger. If and when we get a revamp, I hope they put some good combat mods in for us.

I'd also like to see Poison/Disease resistance built into our skill set (how many times have we been bitten by some venemous creature while out hunting/exploring?). We should build up a natural immunity from exposure over time...

OK, maybe not Disease resistance, but definately Poison resistance.

I agree WeiQuin, I am only talking about it as a last resort. My preference is of course to take us more viable in comabt to live up to our combat rating.

Combat in PVE at least, though camo kit conceal sniper shot is nice. But PVE creature mods is important to get.
