Thread: Another noob question. What is the ranger's role in a group?

First off, sorry if this is posted else where, but the search engine thingy is not working.

My question is: what are the ranger's roles in a group? Of course we can harvest, but that doesn't do anything for thegroup. How big of a role does camo, tracking, traping, camping, ect play? What is the most useful for the group? How do i make the most of my skills as a ranger?

The ranger has no clear purpose in a group.

However, with that said, the best skill we have (tracking) is very useful while on group hunts when searching for a specific critter, like the gorax or krayt dragons.

I've been hunting in groups non-stop since the CU kicked in with the exception of some solo graul hunts. I'm always the creature puller and trap tosser which means I usually end up snaring it for the ranged guys to plunk away at it. Heheh, I used my name in a sentence.

Anyways, having been hunting for quite awhile, I'm also the tactical leader in the hunt, telling people where to go and which target to aim or wait for. I've developed a nice little knack for leading hunts and people appreciate the direction a Ranger can provide.

For example, many people outside scouts and Rangers don't know not to target picket scouts, or pretty much any scouts until the end. I'll maneuver an entire hunting party around the backside of a mob so get at one particular creature, leaving the scouts for last.

Best thing we can do is be a guide.

Areatrack mostly works. So we can lead the hunting party the quary. We can place camps which can be used as field hospitals. We can also apply camoflauge to everyone, not that camo works as it should. Also, for what good they do, we can throw traps, but we're not really that much better than scouts at that.

Also, with the relatively new stealth penalty to solo players of group harvesting bonues, everyone can harvest more with a ranger near by.

Going back to the guide theme, a ranger player's best weapon is their brain, we're meant to be the experts of the wild, and that isn't a skill mod deal, it's a real flesh and blood learnt skill. However, after the combat revamp (no, it isn't an upgrade), a lot of behaviours have changed, so we're all in the process of recompiling our flesh and blood databases

AM seriously going to try and NOT be negative here, just realistic.

When grouped I use a ranger to help find more critters, so we can run across there and go "Oh wait, thats a mission lair" or "Oh hang on, they're only CL17, again...", so that's tracking barfed.

When grouped I get the ranger to drop an HTFB because that heals as fast as a med centre. Course, as we're going to have to haul a55 back to town to get more missions, and for my groups dying is not as common as it used to be, we're quicker getting the doc to heal us up in town anyway. So, that's the camp line barfed.

When grouped, I like that the ranger can slap cammo on us and that sometimes works. OTOH, as we've all got at least scout TN and maskscent (I'm not standing around waiting on slowpokes doddlng up ever last hill and then getting aggroed by everything the rest of the group just walked past happily) cammo is more a sort of 'luxury' for us at the moment. If we get it cool, if we don't no big loss.

When grouped the ranger brings us a healthy harvest bonus... and seriously that is almost the only +ve I can come up with atm.

Former Master Ranger, now ranger 0010 or maybe 0001, but thats jus cos I've got a few SP that I don't want to lose.
Give us a revamp and my merchant/artisan skils get kicked out the window and I'll be back as MR/MRM again.

Depends on the group, and your other profession.

I'm a Master Ranger, and 4444 Rifleman, so I do several things

- tank (not that I want to mind you, but the critters flock to me....)

- damage dealer

- support role. This depends on what the groups goal is. If we're out hunting, then I bump up groups harvest rate. If we're on a higher level planet and the missions are far away, I'll cammo everyone to help us all get there without attracting argo on the way (but since everyone travels on swoops and can outrun almost everything without getting hit at all, this is of debatable importance....)

I'll also throw down camps if any other rifleman need one to shoot from (but most of the time with everyone firing at the same target, they go down fast enough not to be worth the hassle). Camps also can come in handy if we have a group that isn't in a hurry and doesn't include a doctor of any sort (I've been in these... lots of incaps... oh I miss my medic skills.....)

I'm guessing that a ranger's Rescue ability would be handy, but I've never tried it, as about 1 headshot from me will already pull a critter off almost anyone else....

Rangers have a lot of roles in a group. When hunting creatures Rangers can help track for whatever you want to hunt. Once you find the lair, Rangers can help direct the attack instead of having a free for all that gets everyone killed.

Let's not forget that we are now a combat profession. As Master Ranger/Master Rifleman I am CL80 and can dish out some damage (even with all the bugs in the rifleman specials). Rangers also can help Rifleman to get their specials to work. Due to the current terrain bug, conceal shot and the powerful sniper shot are bugged. However, if you throw down a camp this will cause the local terrain to become flat around the camp. Using this flat terrain a Rifleman should be able to get their sniper shot off.

The last thing I would add is that most Rangers are good company on the hunt and always seem to have a good joke or story to pass the time while healing up.
