Thread: Regarding the FS Survival Tree

It wont give you the skill for harvesting since thats a slash command. And without the slash command it wont work.

It wont give you the ability to drop camps. Well i dont think you can drop a basic camp with +5 camping if someone else makes it. But then again maybe that should be testing.

Trapping +5 well thats fine and dandy that you can throw a trap. But at CL80 vs Cl1 you MIGHT land it. Doubtful since its broken right now

Foraging +5 wont work since thas a slash command from the survival branch of scout.

I rem reading the the fs guide, that you only get 2 benifets from itif ya drop novice scout. 1) the +5 Terrain Neg. and 2) the ability to drop a basic camp, that some one else has made. Now a days, after the cu, we don't getor have wilderness xp anymore, so I don't know if #2 will work. I am nowhere near a fully trained Jedi, so I will not be able to test this untill the Ranger revamp, which will be the week after a make Jedi Knight...oh about 2 years from now. What I don't understand is why don't they have any Scoutmissions in any of the fs quests...especally Survival. Anyway I am not gonna take this one, yes I will sorely miss Ranger when if ever I get to the point I have to drop it.

It's an interesting thought.

From what I see listed above, I think it probably works like this:

Slash commands require you to have a specific skill box to use them. This means that things like maskscent, forage, and harvest probably don't work (although the radial menu option for harvest makes me wonder a bit but it probably won't work without Scout). This still doesn't help the fact that a Novice Scout gets around half of what a Master Ranger does when harvesting (because of the "hidden +100 mod", seems like a good way to think about the formula harvest=(1+mod/100)*base=((100+mod)/100)*base) or that a Scout just earning the forage command can get the same type of food items as a Master Ranger (although it might take a bit longer).

Usable items with no listed certs only seem to be based on specific numbers associated with your character (i.e. CL, trapping skill, camping skill, etc). This means that many crafted Scout/Ranger items can benefit from non Scout/Ranger profession skill mods (FS mods, clothing mods, etc). So a person with the FS Survival tree can probably set up basic camps and throw weak traps. And a person with Camo clothing might get better results using the new camo kits.

A fellow Ranger and I were talking about the FS Survival tree and Ranger & Scout skillsthe other day and we ran into a point of confusion. That tree gives you +5 to a bunch of (largely useless) Scout and Ranger stats, such as camping, foraging, harvesting (useful), trapping, etc.


I always thought that you had to have already earned the skill for those boosts to do anything. Ie, it'll make my 150 harvesting into 155, etc. He thought that it meant it enabled you to do them without the basic skill, and fairly well, as everyone has a "hidden" +100 harvesting ability that they normally wouldn't have access to without Novice Scout.


In other words, I'm thinking the tree is useless to non-Scouts, and he's thinking the tree will let a non-Scout access those abilities. (Same with the Surveying tree.)


So now we don't know which it is, and don't know of any non-Scouts who've taken the Survival tree, or non-Artisans who've taken Surveying.


Can anyone clear this up for us?

If memory serves me correctly not only is the +5 in these areas practicallly useless (and all others get at least a +10), but your scouting/ranger XP can not be converted to get this. I might be wrong about this, but that is what I remember, and it at the time I remember thinking, why in the world doesn't scouting and ranger XP go toward this. But it has been a long time since I have done any of the FS stuff so memory may not be as accurate as I would like.

You can't use scout based xp for the tree still.
