I'm MBH/Mranger..and I'm just wondering, why does ranger not get the use of recon armor? this seems silly to me. since I RP a scout trooper now since the CU I am stuck with regular Stormtrooper armor still :-/ is this an issue for the rest of you? and do you think SOE will ever change this? as much as I love my templet I may have to change it to get back into some scout armor (seeing as how i've been waiting for it since launch)

Since I am unaligned I thankfully do not have the problems with faction armor. I prefer the standard battle armor to recon armor, but that is just me. Since I am a pistoleer I can also wear the recon armor. The only pproblem I have is there seems to be few armorsmiths making standard padded armor so I am stuck with the boring blue on blue color scheme.

Simply put, recon armor gets higher ENERGY resists at the expense of lower KINETIC resits.

Now, the major focus of Ranger at the moment is still largely (exclusively?) creature-centric. The majority of creatures, once they aggro you, close to melee range and whomp away doing lots of kinetic damage. So Recon armor would actually be the WORST type of armor for a Ranger.

Recon = high energy resist w/lower kinetic resists

Assault = high kinetic resists w/lower energy resists

Battle = balanced energy & kinetic resists

Since Rangers currently get no defensive mods and aren't intended to be a "tank" type profession, we're actually better off getting the balanced armor (battle armor) since it provides the best protection against kinetic damage without sacraficing energy protection as well (and yes, ranged creature attacks are now considered "energy" damage). This actually would seem to also help our case to break from creature-centric some day, since we are cert'd for armor that provides decent all-around protection from both creatures (mostly kinetic) and NPCs/PCs (energy and kinetic, with an emphasis seeming to shift a bit more to ranged energy attacks post CU). Even in the long run, if we were to take on a stealth/"recon" type role, I would imagine that battle armor would be more appropriate since we're not going to be hanging out behind the lines with the ranged damage dealers (like riflemen for example) who need better energy protection, we'll be scouting ahead of the main force or operating more on the periphery doing recon, laying traps and such, and need a good all around armor to provide protection from melee and ranged attacks (who knows what we're going to find up there, right).

Don't get caught up in the fact that Imperial faction armor is called "Scout Armor" for the recon skin. It's got good energy and bad kinetic resists, so it's actually a poor choice for a Ranger.

Of course, I currently can find Recon armor with BETTER kinetic resists than any of the regular Battle armor I've found, so I'm still running around in my advancedUbese (as a Master Rifleman) since I don't want to mess up my nice Scout Trooper advanced armor (again, MRifles lets me wear that) since both of them have better kinetic protection than the converted battle armor I have currently. Still waiting on the AS I've been buying from to come up with some better battle armor...

Totally agree that Scout Trooper armor for Rangers just seems to make more sense. I usually don't wear armor anyway so the resists don't really matter to me. The Scout Trooper armor is more of a role-playing thing....as a Ranger/Rifleman though, I lucked out and can wear it.

With the exception of the multi-layered batting helmet, marauder armor is one of the coolest looking armors in the game. I'm also a ranger/rifleman, but I really haven't even bothered to look at my options for recon class armor. It's all about the marauder, baby. Good protection, too.

Well...you can actually wear Scout Trooper armor right now, you will just get the encumberence of wearing the wrong type of armor - causing you to shoot andrun slower than normal.

of course my concerns are strictly from a roleplaying perspective (I should have clarified that a bit more originally) I just wish there was a way to have perhaps a dual cert..something with such a wide description as Ranger should have options I think. as should BH, SL and several other professions in my oppinion.

seems we've went from a system that didn't work (the old armor system) to a system that doesn't work for alot of people..just in a different way.

one of the biggest arguments i've heard on these boards since launch has been on the subject of a paying customer being forced into choices in game. this is why Player bounties etc have yet to be introduced....seems now though our esthetic (SP?) choices are limited though. and I don't like that very much. I know I know..you choose the profession you know ahead of time what armor certs come with it. my argument is with there being such a cert system for what many would call casual armor. think of it realisticly...a baker, bartender, airport employee, stripper, submarine captain, wall street CEO, and even humble I can wear any type of armor I want in real life if I can afford it...seems too artificial a limitation too me.

this applies to the weapon certs as well...anyone can grab any gun off the shelf and figure out how to use it...will you use it well? nope..but you still can. certs should be changed to skill modifiers for differnt professions and CLs. as a RPer I could care less about my armors stats...but now i'm a scout trooper with no scout armor..just as I have been since launch, and thats very discouraging too me.

**edit** of course the simplest solution would be adding certs to master skills such as scout as well for a tier cert. master scout gets recon..moving up too master ranger with battle.
