Thread: Defense/Damage BH or Rifleman?
I don't know if BH is "better" than Rifleman in some fashion, but rifles are completely viable as a Ranger combat profession. So, if you like the look of rifles and the thought of crawling on your belly like a reptile, come on over.
Good hunting and clear skies.
I tried many, many combos during respec, most of which included some or all of BH, but I finally settled on master rifleman. BH has some great mods and specials, but I'd rather be proficient with one weapon type than mediocre with three. As a master ranger/master bh, I was okay with rifles, pistols, and carbines, but never had enough speed with any of them to feel really powerful. If ranger is ever granted combat mods (like general ranged/melee speed), I'd probably go back to master ranger/master bh. Until then, though, I'm sticking with rifles, even if the lack of specials is depressing (5 shots, compared to 8 in the carbineer and pistolier profs and 6 in bh). But hey, at least they work now.
As for the defenses... those rifleman melee defenses are terrible. Again, though, if ranger is ever granted defense mods, that would help a lot. Still, if I I'm careful the lack of melee defenses don't matter-- I can kill something before it gets to me, or keep it at bay with phec darts. Phec darts are sketchy right now-- sometimes they root, sometimes they snare-- but regardless they're still our best trap.
Yeah, the lack of decent defenses make us vulnerable when out solo and aggro'd. So, BH might be a better fit if your out solo a lot, rifleman is manageable and much better in a group.
If your going Rifleman, which I really enjoy combined with Ranger, then certainly consider tossing some defense foods in the mix. I make +98 Melee Defense and +98 Ranged Defense foods part of my normal "food up" before jumping into things. I take both of these along with a good general health/action food, like Kwik Swirl and then pop a Neutron Pixie for good times sake! You can also drink some Ruby Bliel and use Stimpacks more often...get some uber 1,200 pt combat level 60 stims also, essential for when stuff gets on you.
Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks for the input. And while I'm swept away in
fantasies about camp fires andglowing eyes of predators in the dark:
